We spent 4 nights in Seville, exploring the highlights from the Catedral de Sevilla’s beauty to the flamenco experience but in an affordable way.

This post will give you practical tips on affordable dining options, budget-friendly accommodations, and cost-effective transportation.

But how much did we spend for 4 nights for 2 people?

Hotel (4 nights) – $558.21 about $140/night

Food – $245 about $61/day

Tours and Entertainment – $274

Transportation – $106.67

Total – $1,183 or $592 per person

That’s less than $150 per night per person including staying in luxury accommodations in an amazing location, food, tours, entertainment, and transportation.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

On Day 1 we arrived in Seville by high-speed train from Madrid and took some time to explore the area.

Our hotel was centrally located in the El Arenal neighborhood on a street lined with restaurants and nearby iconic landmarks like the Torre del Oro (Golden Tower) and the Real Maestranza de Caballería (bull ring).

After doing a little exploring we walked about 10 minutes across the Puente de Triana into the Triana Neighborhood to see a Flamenco show!

Triana has a rich heritage and is known as the birthplace of Flamenco. It was the perfect way to start our 4 days in Seville!

Day 1 Suggested Itinerary

Morning/Afternoon

On your arrival to Seville, I suggest you take some time to settle in and explore.

Take a stroll along the Paseo de Cristóbal Colón. It’s a beautiful promenade on the Guadalquivir River, on the same side as the Torre del Oro.

You can grab a bite to eat at the Mercado Lonja del Barranco, a modern market with several gourmet food stalls. We stopped here a few times to reduce food costs.

In the afternoon take a walk across the bridge into the Triana neighborhood and check out the Mercado de Triana.

It’s a great place to sample some local cuisine with several bars and cafes within the market that serve traditional tapas and drinks.

Evening

Pretty much all of the restaurants in the area close around 4 or 4:30 pm and do not open back up until 8 or 8:30 pm for dinner.

I usually like an early dinner, so this was a cultural thing that I had to get used to, but it wasn’t hard.

I would take that time to rest up and get ready for a fun night of Flamenco!

Flamenco was my favorite experience in Seville.

It goes beyond mere performance; it’s an emotional journey deeply rooted in the diverse cultures of Andalusia. I got literal goosebumps from the performance.

And for us, there was no better place to enjoy a flamenco show than the historic Triana neighborhood. The shows are less commercial and showcase genuine emotional depth steeped in tradition.

We felt like we truly experienced the soul of Seville.

It’s your choice to do the show before or after you do dinner. I would recommend going to the show before and then popping into one of the many restaurants in the Triana neighborhood.

Flamenco Show: $24-$30 per person

Day 2: Culture and Heritage

On our 2nd day in Seville, we decided to sleep in before heading to the Santa Cruz neighborhood for some sightseeing!

We booked back-to-back tours for the Real Alcázar, Seville Cathedral, and Giralda Tower.

We purchased the add-on to climb the Giralda Tower at the Cathedral but didn’t reach the top.

To get to the top of the tower there are 34 wide ramps and then 17 steps. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but after back-to-back tours, it was too much for us.

I would not recommend doing back-to-back tours.

Day 2 Suggested Itinerary

Morning

Take your time in the morning, there’s no need to rush and pack your day in Spain. Seville is best experienced slowly.

Go grab some coffee and take a morning stroll along the river.

Today, I would recommend hanging out in the Santa Cruz neighborhood.

It’s the old Jewish quarter, full of restaurants and cafes. Try some local specialties like gazpacho or jamón ibérico.

Afternoon/Evening

While you’re in the Santa Cruz neighborhood you should check out either the Seville Cathedral or the Real Alcázar if you’re not up for doing both. They are located right next to each other.

We enjoyed our guided tours because I would rather hear about the history and highlights from an experienced guide rather than read it for myself.

We had the same tour guide for both tours and she was amazing. Probably our favorite tour guide of the entire trip.

If I do it again, I would book the guided tour only for the Real Alcázar.

The Real Alcázar, was a royal palace originally developed by Moorish Muslim kings. The blend of architectural styles and beautiful gardens was amazing.

Our tour was about 90 minutes and only covered the palace itself (which is stunning).

I was bummed that we didn’t have much time to tour the grounds and gardens. It was so beautiful.

We did have a chance to visit the Los Baños de Doña María de Padilla which I highly recommend. They are rainwater tanks named after María de Padilla, the mistress of King Peter.

After the palace, you can walk over to the Seville Cathedral one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. It’s also home to the tomb of Christopher Columbus.

I don’t think you need a guided tour of the Cathedral unless you are a huge history buff. But it is visually stunning and a must-visit.

Depending on your schedule you could do the cathedral first and then tour the Real Alcázar. Either way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

Day 3: Local Experiences

On our 3rd day in Seville, we took advantage of a 2 day Hop on Hop off Bus Tour to explore Seville and take us to areas that were too far to walk.

Some of the highlights we discovered:

• Basilica of the Macarena Seville
• Free Walking Tour was included with our hop on hop off bus tour
• The bullring of Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla

Day 3 Suggested Itinerary

Morning

Start with the Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Bus: Start your day by catching the hop-on tour bus. This is an excellent way to get an overview of Seville and spot places you might want to explore more thoroughly on future visits. You can pick up the bus from any of its stops throughout the city.

Visit La Macarena: One of the bus stops was in the Macarena district.

This area is home to the Basilica de la Macarena, where you can see the revered Virgen de la Macarena. Explore the neighborhood’s charming streets and maybe grab a coffee at a local café.

Afternoon

Join a Free Walking Tour: Most hop-on hop-off bus tickets include options for a guided walking tour.

This tour will give you deeper insights into Seville’s history and hidden gems, focusing on areas like the historic Triana neighborhood.

Real Maestranza Self-Guided Tour: The afternoon is a good time to check out the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza, Seville’s bullring, one of Spain’s oldest and most famous.

A self-guided tour will allow you to explore at your own pace, delve into the bullfighting museum, and step into the arena itself.

Day 4: Relaxation and Culture

Your last day in Seville is the perfect time to relax and experience some more of the city’s rich culture.

Getting to Seville

We took the high speed train from Madrid into Seville, it was less than 3 hours and very affordable.

After our time was over in Seville, we flew out of the local Seville Airport to Barcelona. The airport was easily accessible and we flew on budget airline Vueling to get to Barcelona.

Getting Around Seville

To get around Seville, we walked or took the hop on hop-off bus.

We stayed in the Arenal area, across the bridge from the Triana neighborhood so everything we wanted to see was nearby or easily accessible by the hop on hop off tour bus.

Best Location To Stay in Seville Spain

Santa Cruz: This is the most picturesque and popular area to stay in Seville. It’s the historic Jewish quarter and offers narrow winding streets, beautiful plazas, and easy access to major attractions like the Seville Cathedral and the Alcázar.

El Arenal: Located between the historic center and the Guadalquivir River, El Arenal is known for its bullring (the Real Maestranza), lively atmosphere, and proximity to both shopping and cultural sites. It’s also a great area for dining and nightlife.

Triana: Across the river from the city center, Triana is a bit more laid-back and local in feel but is famous for its vibrant flamenco scene and pottery workshops. It’s a great choice if you’re looking to stay in a neighborhood with a strong traditional character and don’t mind a short walk or bus ride to reach the main tourist areas.

Alameda: Known for its bohemian atmosphere, Alameda is centered around the Alameda de Hércules, a large square surrounded by tapas bars, cafes, and nightclubs.

Macarena: North of the city center, Macarena is less touristy and offers a more authentic local experience. The area features historical sites like the Basilica of Macarena and the medieval city walls, along with a variety of affordable accommodations.

Centro: The city center of Seville (Centro) encompasses areas around the Metropol Parasol and shopping streets like Calle Sierpes.

Nervión: A more modern part of Seville, Nervión is located east of the historic center and offers more contemporary hotels, shopping malls, and is close to the Sevilla FC stadium. It’s a good option if you prefer a quieter area but still want convenient access to the rest of the city.

What is the best time to visit Seville?

We traveled during shoulder season which is in the Spring March-May. We visited in mid-May and the weather was absolutely amazing.

The crowds were not too bad and the prices of hotels and trains were very affordable. This is arguably the most beautiful time to visit Seville, as the weather is warm but not yet hot, and the city is vibrant with blooming flowers.

Be mindful of traveling to Seville during one of their big festivals:

• Semana Santa (Holy Week): A deeply cultural and spiritual event leading up to Easter, where you can witness processions and pageantry unique to Seville.
• Feria de Abril (April Fair): Occurring two weeks after Easter, this festival features flamenco dancing, bullfights, and lots of local food and drink. The city comes alive with color and festivity.

Fall (September to November): The scorching summer heat begins to subside, making it a comfortable time to explore the city. The crowds are also fewer compared to spring. September and October still see many sunny days, with temperatures that are conducive to walking and outdoor activities.

I would not recommend traveling to Seville during the summer months of June-August. It gets very hot, like intensely hot which is why we avoided it and traveled in May just before summer. We already live in hot sunny South Florida and were not about to endure more heat on vacation.

Winter (December to February): Winters are mild compared to much of Europe, and while it can be a bit chilly, it’s rarely freezing. This can be a good time to visit if you prefer avoiding crowds and don’t mind cooler temperatures.

How can I save money on food in Seville?

One of the things that makes Seville and most cities in Spain affordable is the food. It’s not uncommon to find a meal that is not only cheap but authentic and delicious.

Here are some tips for saving money on food in Spain:

Tapas Culture: Embrace the tapas culture! Tapas are essentially just snacks, but in Spain, sometimes the portions can easily be a full meal for half the price of an entree. I love it because it gives you a chance to try a variety of tasty dishes for a low price.

Menu del Día: Some restaurants offer a “Menu del Día” or “Menu of the Day” during lunchtime. It can be a substantial meal at a very reasonable price like 10-15 euros.

Eat where the locals eat: Stay away from the main tourist areas and ask some locals where they like to eat. We found an amazing restaurant off the main street from our hotel in an alley which was amazing.

It was called La Brunilda Tapas. We didn’t have a reservation, but we went there about 45 minutes before their opening time of 8:30 pm. We were the 2nd party in line, by the time they opened the queue had grown long, so I’m glad we arrived early!

Visit Local Markets: Markets like Mercado de Triana offer fresh produce and have various stalls where you can buy affordable, ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and drinks. It’s a good opportunity to try local specialties for less.

Late (and big) Lunch: Spaniards typically eat lunch between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Many restaurants cater to this by offering their best meal deals during these hours, which are more substantial and affordable compared to dinner menus.

What are the must-try foods in Seville?

You will encounter a lot of ham, I have never eaten so many ham sandwiches in my life!

But it was so good.

It’s not uncommon to walk into a cafe and sandwiches that consist of just a few slices of meat in between two pieces of bread and pressed down flat like a panini. It’s simple yet delicious.

Tapas: Seville is famous for its tapas, which are small dishes shared among friends. Some popular options include:

• Jamon Iberico: A type of cured ham from the Iberian pig, renowned for its rich flavor.
• Tortilla Española: A thick Spanish omelet made with potatoes and onions.
• Patatas Bravas: Fried potatoes served with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli.
• Salmorejo: A thick, creamy tomato soup that is served cold, often garnished with hard-boiled eggs and jamón.
• Churros con Chocolate: While not unique to Seville, no visit to Spain would be complete without enjoying churros with a thick hot chocolate for dipping. It’s a popular breakfast or late-night snack.
• Secreto Iberico: A high-quality cut of pork that is incredibly tender and flavorful, often grilled or roasted to perfection.

If you’re used to American food, I would recommend that you try new things in Spain. Many of the menu items may look or sound weird, but trust me you won’t regret trying something new.

Whenever I think of Tennessee, Nashville’s iconic music scene always springs to mind. But just a short drive away, Franklin, TN, has a quintessentially southern, acoustic charm unlike anywhere else.

In Franklin, even the biggest names in music come to unwind, find inspiration, or call it home!

I’m not kidding- Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Tim McGraw, and Brad Paisley have all called Franklin TN their home at some point, and it is not uncommon to see a celebrity enjoying a cup of coffee or dinner around town.

My husband and I discovered just how magical Franklin can be during our visit in the fall.

As native South Floridians, we miss out on the fall colors, but Franklin has everything we love about the season.

We believe that it is worth a visit, whether you’re in Nashville looking for a day trip or a weekend getaway and no, I’m not just saying that because our last name is also Franklin.

In this post, we’ll discover the top 9 fall activities for couples in Franklin.

You’ll know why Franklin is a true hidden gem from live acoustic sets from up-and-coming musicians to fall festivals.

So, pour yourself a warm cup of cider and prepare to fall in love with Franklin, Tennessee!

1. Cozy Breakfast Date

Oh man, I’ve always loved Southern Food (it’s the biscuits for me) and Franklin does not disappoint!

There are so many cute breakfast spots in downtown Franklin and the surrounding areas that are perfect for a romantic breakfast or brunch date.

Our Pick: Merridee’s Breadbasket

Merridee’s Breadbasket is located downtown on the same street as the Franklin Visitor Center, but it is not a traditional sit-down breakfast spot.

When you walk in, you order at the counter, they give you a number and you sit wherever you want. They’ll bring your order to you.

I love this concept!

There’s also seating outside and since the restaurant is not directly on Mainstreet, it’s still peaceful to sit there during breakfast.

You must try the cinnamon roll specialty coffee, it was my favorite! They also have glass cases filled with desserts and pastries.

Some of our other favorite breakfast spots:

• Puckett’s Restaurant – located right next door to Merridee’s. It’s like walking into a small grocery market, but it’s a traditional sit-down restaurant.
• Biscuit Love – located downtown in the historic Corn House, just a few steps from the public square. You gotta get a biscuit sandwich!
• Five Daughter’s Bakery—If you’re more into sweets for breakfast, you can head to The Factory and grab a freshly made donut. They offer seasonal flavors!

2. Franklin’s Coffee Trail

I don’t know about you, but my husband and I are much happier when we’ve had a good cup of coffee, really any time of the day.

Thankfully, Franklin has a coffee trail with plenty of amazing options for that perfect cup of Joe!

You can find the best spots by signing up for the Franklin Craft Coffee Trail, one of many free digital passports available, with no app download required.

Once signed up, you’ll have access to discounts at coffee shops around town. When you check in to 5 or more locations, you can pick up a prize from the downtown Franklin visitor center.

We stopped at a few shops during our stay:

• McGavock’s Coffee Bar & Provisions – located inside the stunning Harpeth Hotel where we were staying.
• The Coffee House At Second And Bridge – located practically next door to the Harpeth Hotel in an old quaint southern house.
• The Fainting Goat Coffee Co. – across the street from The Carter House!
• Honest Coffee – we stopped by during our visit to The Factory in Franklin.

3. Scenic Drives Around Franklin

Coming from South Florida, we miss out on the leaves changing colors during the fall season. Thankfully, when driving around Frankin, there’s no shortage of beautiful scenery.

If you’re headed to Franklin, chances are you’ve rented a car so I highly recommend you go on some scenic drives to experience the charm of southern homes, farms, and old silos.

It’s something that my husband and I love to do when traveling!

Check out these routes:

Natchez Trace Parkway stretches 444 miles from Nashville, to Natchez, Mississippi. Franklin is home to the iconic Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, a perfect photo opp, especially in the fall!

Old Natchez Trace runs parallel to the Natchez Trace Parkway and is known for beautiful estates and old farms, you’ll drive through some of the most affluent areas of Franklin.

Leipers Fork Scenic Route is a must-do when you’re in Franklin! It’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown Franklin and the village is like taking a trip back in time. It’s so cute!

Franklin Road: If you’re heading to Nashville, you’ll likely be taking Franklin Road. It’s a beautiful scenic drive so even though it’s sad that you’re leaving Franklin, at least you have a nice drive to enjoy on the way!

4. Discover the Charm of Leiper‘s Fork

Leiper’s Fork is approximately 8 to 10 miles southwest of downtown Franklin. The drive usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Not only is the drive one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, but this village is something out of a Hallmark movie!

There’s so much to do in Leiper’s Fork! It’s a relaxed atmosphere with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s no wonder so many celebrities call Leiper’s Fork and Franklin home.

We also had the opportunity to enjoy dinner and an open mic night at Fox & Locke. More on that later!

5. Hop On and Hop Off Scenic Tour

Who doesn’t love a hop-on hop-off tour?

It’s our favorite way to see a new place because it gives you a nice overview of the area and also serves as transportation to all of the major sights and attractions.

“The Franklin Hop” had a live tour guide knowledgeable about Frankin’s history, particularly during the Civil War, he even brought props!

He also gave us “homework” including books to read and movies to watch to understand better what it was like in Franklin and the South.

We caught the tour downtown at the Franklin Visitor Center.

The trolley tour takes you around downtown Franklin and beyond while making stops at major sights like the Factory, The Moore-Morris History & Culture Center, Carnton, and Carter House.

It’s one trolley that hits each stop every hour. The route is quite scenic!

Fun Fact, The Culture Center has a really cool presentation where you step into a saloon and are greeted by bartender hologram! The way they tell the history of Franklin is state of the art. A must visit!

6. Leisurely Picnic at Arrington Vineyards

Set on 95 beautiful acres, Arrington Vineyards is a serene escape with panoramic views of the rolling countryside of Middle Tennessee. And a fun fact, it is co-owned by country music artist Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn.

It’s truly a picturesque setting and perfect for a day out as a couple, but it’s even better with friends!

At the vineyard, you can bring your own picnic, and purchase a wine flight, glass, or a bottle to enjoy while listening to live music at several spots on the grounds.

It takes about 20 minutes to get there from downtown Franklin and the drive has breathtaking views of the Tennesee countryside.

7. Enjoy a Walk and Self-Guided Tour on Main Street

One of our favorite activities was grabbing a coffee and walking on Main Street in Downtown Franklin.

The downtown area was decorated for fall and it was so cute and quintessentially southern. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.

I also love that they are so pet-friendly! There are white dog bowls on Main Street, so cute.

Be sure to make a stop at the Franklin Theatre, known as the Crown Jewel of Franklin’s Main Street which offers movies, live music, dance performances, and more.

There are also self-guided tours on the Visit Franklin website as part of the digital passport program including the Great American Main Street.

All self-guided tours are free!

8. Catch Live Music at Local Venues

Probably, the coolest experience of the entire visit was the live music, especially at Fox & Locke restaurant in Leiper’s Fork.

On Thursday nights, Fox & Locke hosts an open mic night. It attracts a mix of local talent, musicians passing through, and some driving hours to grab a spot to perform.

The cover is only $7 and purchasing tickets is highly recommended. They sell out in minutes!

The lineup was amazing—we listened to artists from around the world! Some performed covers and others performed original songs for the first time.

I know I’ll be hearing some of these songs on the radio someday, the talent is next level!

Several celebrities walked in to listen or hung out outside. One of which was Patrick Cassidy (yes, those Cassidys) came to watch his son perform – Jack Cassidy.

It was honestly one of the coolest experiences and one that my husband and I will be talking about for years to come.

It was better than any of the live performances we experienced in Nashville – and that’s saying a lot because I’ve been to the Bluebird Cafe!

But that’s not all, there’s live music everywhere in Franklin. Here’s some of our favorites:

• Tornado Room – located in Leiper’s Fork just below The Country Boy restaurant (across from Fox & Locke). It’s an intimate speakeasy that is actually used as a tornado shelter!
• Kimbro’s Pickin Parlor – located in downtown Franklin, is like a huge house party with live music, games, and food.
• Gray’s on Main – located on Main Street, Gray’s is a pharmacy turned bar and restaurant with live music on the 2nd floor.

9. Photo Ops at Pumpkinfest

Our trip to Franklin fell on the 39th annual Pumpkinfest which is held on Main Street and welcomes over 100,000 people!

They set up what was dubbed “Autumn Alley” on a section of Main Street with a ton of super fun fall-themed photo opportunities, games, and live music.

We had a lot of fun getting those fall pics that can never happen in South Florida.

The festival has a main stage for live performances, vendors selling arts and crafts, and plenty of fun food stalls from homemade donuts to German delights!

It was a fun way to enjoy the season!

Fun Fact, this year Franklin also celebrated the 225th anniversary of the city’s founding.

How far is Franklin from Nashville?

Franklin, TN, is just a hop, skip, and a jump from iconic Nashville. It’s only about 21 miles south of Nashville and an easy drive.

It took us around 30 -40 minutes driving during peak rush hour. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway from Nashville or if you want to spend the day there – although I don’t think that’s enough!

Is Franklin, TN worth visiting?

Absolutely, Franklin, TN, is undoubtedly worth a visit! Franklin is a charming city steeped in history, particularly from the Civil War era and the Battle of Franklin.

But even if you’re not into history, just walking around the downtown area and visiting the quaint antique shops and boutiques gives quintessential Southern town vibes.

And you can’t miss the live music scene! Even if you’re not into country music, you can’t walk down the street without stopping to listen to whoever is performing.

Metro: This is one of the most convenient and economical ways to reach the airport. From central Madrid, the trip typically takes about 45 minutes. Check for routes on Google Maps.

Train (Cercanías): The Cercanías trains (Renfe suburban trains) have lines directly to Terminal 4 of the Madrid airport. The trip from central Madrid would take about 25 minutes.

Bus: The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs 24/7 most days of the year with direct service to all the major terminals and takes about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic from central Madrid.

Taxi: This is the option we chose mostly because of the convenience of our luggage. It took about 20-30 minutes from the Hyatt Centric Madrid.

Taxis operate at a flat rate to the airport. We spent $31.28. During our time in Spain we used the FREENOW app exclusively to call our taxis. It was great!

Ride-Sharing Services: Services like Uber and Cabify are available in Madrid, but the pricing was so similar to the taxis that we just opted to use the FREENOW app.

Check-in and Security Process in Madrid

Business Class check-in at the Madrid Airport went smoothly even with checking our bags. We always pack carry-on only but after 12 nights in Spain, we had souvenirs and didn’t want to cram it all in a suitcase.

Checking our carry-on luggage was free with our business-class tickets and very little risk since we had a nonstop flight home.

Luckily, we always pack a collapsible backpack when we travel. We took it on the plane as a carry-on item. It’s great for souvenirs or any extra stuff you may need.

For security, we took advantage of the “Fast Track” perk included with our business class tickets.

Fast Track is a separate security checkpoint, similar to TSA Precheck so we didn’t have to go through regular security. And it was empty so we breezed right through!

VAT Refund

Before we enjoyed the “Fast Track” through security, we had a very important task – collecting our VAT Refund.

As non-EU citizens, we were eligible for a VAT or Value Added Tax Refund. At the Madrid Airport, there are several kiosks for you to scan your paperwork.

Once we scanned our receipts and were given the green check mark, we were ready to get through security, and off to the airport lounge!

Iberia VIP Lounge Madrid Airport

We were pretty excited to get to relax and enjoy the food and amenities at the Iberia Premium Lounge – Velázquez. There are two Iberia VIP Lounges at the Madrid Airport, both are located in terminal T4.

The Dalí lounge is the domestic lounge located right when we exited the “Fast Track” security checkpoint. But since our flight was international, our terminal was T4S which is where the Iberia Premium Lounge – Velázquez was located.

T4S is the satellite terminal of T4. This meant that we had to take a train to get there.

That’s why I like getting to the airport well in advance of departure. It took us an extra 30 minutes just to get to T4S.

Iberia Premium Lounge – Velázquez Experience

Once we finally arrived at T4S, we were directed through to the Duty-free shop to get to the lounge. Yup, the lounge is literally inside the Duty-free shop!

Once we entered the lounge, it was like we opened the door to another world. We were definitely not in the Duty-free shop anymore.

After presenting our boarding passes, we walked to the right of the check-in counter and noticed a room with several clear lockers to store our luggage.

After lugging it through the airport for what felt like forever, it was a relief to walk around the lounge hands-free.

The view from the lounge was amazing. The tarmac was right in front of us with planes going up and down while some Iberia planes waited at their gates.

The lounge itself was quite narrow and long, but it didn’t matter which direction you chose to hangout in.

I loved how much light came in from the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, it was a great way to enjoy the time we had before boarding the flight.

Lounge Food and Beverage

The lounge had a buffet on each end. It was the same food selection, so it didn’t matter which side you chose to hang out in.

Buffet Area: The buffet had a nice selection of hot and cold dishes. For breakfast, they had eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, donuts, pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, salads and more. They even had several fruit juices and smoothies available.

Snacks: On top of what was available at the buffet, they had a table with a bunch of snacks like popcorn, nuts, granola bars, and even candy. I was so full and regret not grabbing from the snack table.

Beverages: There was a wide range of beverages. I mean if you could think of a beverage they had it.

I made a game of grabbing as many different beverages as I could to try them. Of course, they had your usual coffee, tea, soft drinks, and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Lounge Amenities

This lounge had no shortage of amenities. If we had a long layover I could have spent it just in the lounge and would be a happy camper.

Seating Areas: There were so many comfortable seating options available throughout the lounge. There were different types of tables and chairs to accommodate whether you wanted to dine, rest, or work.

Wi-Fi: Complimentary high-speed internet access was available.

Showers: Shower facilities were available.

Resting Areas: There were separate rooms for sleeping.

Flight Information Monitors: Screens displaying flight information help passengers keep track of their flight status.

Rest Zones: Specific areas designed for relaxation and quiet.

Family Rooms: Facilities catering to travelers with children.

Boarding Procedure and Departure from Madrid

After about 90 minutes in the business class lounge, we decided to head over to our gate and prepare to board our flight.

Right in front of the gate, was a checkpoint where they asked for our boarding passes and passports. I’d never seen that before and thought it was interesting.

Anyway, when it was time to start boarding we were in the first group as business class passengers. Now, this is where it gets interesting and a little bit frustrating to be honest.

They scanned our boarding passes, we headed down the the breezeway and down two flights of stairs with our bags, which wasn’t fun.

Once we got to the ground, we were packed like sardines into shuttles and driven to the plane on the tarmac. The fumes and enclosed space made things very uncomfortable.

Once we got to our plane, we were told the plane was not ready so we could not get off the shuttle. I needed some fresh air!

Turns out the crew hadn’t even arrived on the plane yet. So we were stuck on a hot shuttle with nowhere to sit breathing in a ton of fumes while holding our bags for 20 mins.

Why they would have us start boarding the shuttles when the crew hadn’t even arrived to prep the plane is beyond me.

Needless to say, being in the first boarding group did not matter at all!

The worst part was the chaos that ensued once they allowed us to board. Everyone was jammed on top of each other trying to go up the stairs to board the plane.

I had to carry my bags and help my mom with hers because it was too much for her to climb up the stairs while being pushed around by people.

Needless to say, it was not a great experience at all. I felt like it could have been executed in a much better way.

In-Flight Experience

Even though the boarding process was a bit of a nightmare, once we arrived in business class and at our seats it got 100% better.

Immediately upon getting to my seat, I was greeted by one of the flight attendants and given a cold glass of cava!

In this type of situation, I was happy to have my own space in my business class seat.

Food and Beverage Service

The daytime business class experience was very different from the evening service. Right after take off, I was given a few slices of Spanish cheese and mini bread sticks. Lunch service began shortly after.

Appetizers: I chose marinated octopus served on a bed of sauteed vegetables. It was pretty tasty. They also served bread and olives. I opted for a glass of wine for my beverage.

Main Courses: Options included chicken, shrimp, or pasta.

I went with the pasta because I was afraid the chicken would be dry or the shrimp would be tough and I thought – you can’t mess up ravioli, right?

Well, I was right. The pasta turned out to be a very safe choice.

Desserts: I had 2 options: raspberry ice cream or a hazelnut chocolate cake.

During our previous business class flight, I had chosen the ice cream and loved it. So I decided to go with the chocolate cake and was not disappointed! It was light and not too sweet.

Snacks: For snacks, they had a variety of chips and crackers. At some point during the flight, they came around with cookies and cream white chocolate ice cream bars.

Before Landing: To my surprise, they offered a warm meal about 90 minutes before landing. I chose a vegetable lasagna. It didn’t look appetizing and ended up pretty greasy.

The beverage service had a selection of wines including Cava (Spanish sparkling wine), spirits, soft drinks, juices, coffee, and tea.

Overall, I would say the food was just ok.

I was ready for some real food as soon as we landed. I don’t understand why they can’t offer you a nice hearty sandwich on these types of flights. Those can be fancy!

Cabin Crew Service

After having such a horrible boarding experience, I thoroughly enjoyed the service provided by the crew on this flight. They were both friendly and attentive.

At the beginning of the flight, the lead flight attendant came to every business class passenger to introduce himself and wish us a pleasant flight.

He then came around again before landing to make sure we didn’t need anything to thank us for flying with them.

I have only flown international business class a handful of times, but I thought this was a nice touch.

Arrival in Miami

And then it was time to land!

We landed in Miami at a gate that appeared to be at a satellite terminal as well. We had to jump on a shuttle to get to the customs and luggage carousel.

We have Global Entry so getting through customs did not take long at all.

Once we were through customs, the luggage carousel was close by. It was definitely a separate area from the main luggage pick-up carousels which was kind of nice.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’d say that we had a good experience flying on Iberia Business Class Airbus A330-300 from Madrid to Maimi.

Apart from the less-than-pleasant boarding experience, we really enjoyed our Iberia business class lounge experience in Madrid.

During the flight, we were comfortable with plenty of entertainment options and plenty of food, drinks, and snacks. If given the option I would absolutely do it again.

The next time we go to Spain, I will be booking the Iberia business class experience again. The points and miles sweet spot is just too sweet to pass up!

If you’ve ever shopped abroad in the European Union, you’ve likely encountered VAT without realizing what it is or how it affects your purchases.

In this post, we will break down what VAT really means, how it works, and the different rates you might come across.

Plus, we’ve got a special tip for non-EU residents on how you can claim a VAT refund, potentially saving you a significant amount of money.

Whether you’re a seasoned shopper or a curious tourist, this guide will arm you with the knowledge to navigate VAT like a pro and make the most of your trip abroad!

What is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax, and it’s pretty much everywhere when you shop in countries like Spain and those in the European Union.

VAT rates can vary wildly depending on where you are and what you’re buying. It’s applied broadly across most goods and services.

Necessities might have lower rates or none at all (like some foods or books), while other items are taxed at the standard rate, which could be as high as 27% in some EU countries.

You’ll typically see VAT applied to things like:

• Retail Goods: Clothing, electronics, etc.
• Services: Hotel accommodations, restaurant meals, and transport services.
• Luxury Items: Jewelry, artwork, and high-end electronics.
• Daily Essentials: In some regions, even groceries, pharmaceuticals, and other necessities may have VAT.

Each country decides its own VAT rates and categories.

So, you can see why it’s important to understand the process for requesting a refund.

Who is eligible for a VAT refund?

Non-EU citizens are eligible for a VAT refund on purchases made within the EU, under certain conditions.

Here are the main eligibility criteria:

Residency: You must be a resident outside the EU. This generally needs to be verified with your passport or other identification.

Minimum Purchase Amount: Most EU countries require that you spend a minimum amount in a single store on the same day to qualify for a VAT refund. This amount varies by country. In Spain, for instance, there is no minimal spending amount.

Export of Goods: You must export (take them) the purchased goods out of the EU within a specific time frame, usually within three months of purchase.

Customs Validation: Before leaving the EU, you must have your Tax-Free Forms stamped or validated by customs to prove that the goods are leaving the EU.

This may mean you’ll need to show the goods, your receipts, and your completed Tax-Free Forms at the customs desk at the airport or border crossing. Nowadays everything is digital.

If you’re buying things like clothes or accessories, you likely won’t need to show these at customs, but I would keep them on you just in case.

Expensive items or electronics like laptops or cell phones will likely need to be physically verified by customs.

Purchases Eligible for VAT Refunds

For tourists, not all VAT-paid goods are eligible for refunds upon leaving the country.

Goods Only: Services, like hotel stays and meals, are generally not eligible for VAT refunds.

Unused and Exported Goods: The purchased goods must be unused and taken out of the country, usually within three months of purchase.

Basically, if you’re buying purses, clothes, watches, jewelry, or something like that then you’re likely eligible for a refund.

Shopping and Getting the VAT Tax-Free Form

When you’re shopping around Spain, make sure that you ask in-store (preferably before purchase) whether they participate in the VAT Refund program. Not all retailers participate in the program.

If they do, great! If not, at least you asked.

If they do participate, they will ask for your passport and personal information.

Several companies specialize in processing VAT Refunds. The store that we went to used Global Blue.

Global Blue made the process extremely simple. I downloaded the app and everything needed to process the VAT Refund was available just as the store entered it.

I chose to have the refund done via credit card and did not need to pay a processing fee. In some cases, if you want the refund in cash, they will take out a percentage.

We were given our paperwork and receipt which we kept, but if for some reason we did lose it I was confident that the information on the app would be all that we needed to complete the process.

Arriving at the Madrid Airport – MAD

Since we were leaving the European Union from Spain and heading back to the States, we completed customs validation at the Madrid Airport.

If you are hopping to another country within the EU, you don’t need to complete the process when departing from Spain.

You should wait until you are leaving the EU to validate all of your items purchased in countries with the European Union.

After checking in our bags (we kept our items with us), we had no problems finding a DIVA kiosk for self-validation.

The process was simple, we scanned the bar code on the receipt and were given the green check mark.

The green check mark meant that customs had validated our items and our refund would be processed. I saw the refund on my credit within 5 business days, super quick!

If we had been given a red X then we would have needed to take our items to the customs office for validation.

Do you need to keep your items with you for validation? If you’ve purchased clothes, shoes, or inexpensive items then you will likely not need to show your items for validation.

However, if you’ve purchased expensive items or electronics like laptops or cell phones it’s more likely that you will be directed to the customs office for validation.

Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

Claiming VAT back in Spain can be a smooth process if you’re aware of the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Not Checking Eligibility: Don’t be like me! We spent $300 at a store and completely forgot to ask if they do VAT Refunds (facepalm).

So, I recommend that the first thing you do when you step into a store is ask whether they participate in the program. Not all retailers will have a “Tax-Free shopping” sign.

The good news is that even if you forget, as long as you have the receipt, you can go back to the store and complete the process if the store participates.

You cannot complete the process online or anything like that. You must start the process in person at the store.

Not Bringing Your Passport: You must have your actual passport or another form of eligible identification for the store to process your tax-free form. A photo may not cut it. I always keep my passport with me in an antitheft purse.

Failing to Meet Minimum Spend Requirements: Each country has a minimum purchase amount to qualify for a VAT refund. The store can tell you, but you can also see the minimums for the country you’re visiting by going to the VAT website or one of the processing services like the Global Blue website.

Improper Documentation: Incomplete forms or missing receipts can lead to a denied VAT refund. Now that everything is digital it’s much harder for this one to happen. To be safe, make sure you keep all documentation given to you by the store.

Packing Purchased Goods Incorrectly: You won’t always need to have the items with you for customs validation, but you should keep them in your carry-on just in case.

Missing Customs Validation: Please do not forget to scan the barcode at a DIVA kiosk. If you don’t get that green check mark or a stamp from customs then you will not receive your refund.

Allow extra time in case you need to visit the customs office for inspection before validation.

Ignoring Service Fees: If you don’t need the cash, opt to get the refund via a credit card electronically. This option usually comes without unnecessary processing fees. Get that money!

I had the fun experience of enjoying Iberia Business Class on a roundtrip flight from Miami to Madrid.

As someone who has been navigating the world of points and miles since 2015, finding this sweet spot was a great way to start and end our trip in Spain.

I first started researching our next trip to Europe and we chose Spain because of this sweet spot. I followed the deal!

I’ve always wanted to visit Spain, my family is from Puerto Rico but beyond that I have strong ancestry from the Iberian Peninsula.

I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to explore my heritage!

In this post, I’ll share the ins and outs of our trip to Spain in the luxury of business class for less than $300 roundtrip.

You’ll get all the details from the comfort level, service, and overall experience that the Iberia Business Class A330 offers.

Spoiler alert: We really enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend that you take advantage of this business class deal using points and miles!

Why Iberia Business Class

I didn’t have high expectations for Iberia Business Class. In my research, I read that they were not exactly industry-leading with this product.

But honestly, a lie-flat seat for a 9-hour flight with food and drinks sounded like the perfect way to start our 12-night trip around Spain regardless of how fancy.

Iberia Business Class offered all the amenities that you could expect from this type of ticket class:

• Comfortable and Lie-Flat Seats
• 1-2-1 seat configuration
• In-flight Entertainment
• In-flight Wifi – complimentary messaging option for business class and loyalty members.
• High-Quality Meals and Drinks
• Superior Amenities – noise-canceling headphones, plush bedding.
• Amenity Kits – skincare products, sleep masks, and other travel essentials.

Booking Process

Iberia Airlines is definitely a sweet spot for Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

I transferred 85,000 points from Chase Ultimate Rewards® and paid under $300 in taxes and fees for this roundtrip Iberia business class flight.

The cash price would have been over $4,000 for the same exact roundtrip flight.

Previously, I had flown business class with Air France (MIA-CDG) which cost me 70,000 points one way, that’s over 60% more!

That’s what I love about the world of points and miles, I earn on purchases that I was going to make anyway and then I turn around and use those points for experiences I would otherwise not be able to afford.

This was a roundtrip flight, so I also have a post about our experience flying from Madrid to Miami with Iberia Business Class.

Pre-Flight Experience

Our flight from Miami to Madrid departed at 4:45 pm so we arrived at least 3 hours early at Miami International Airport.

I don’t like feeling rushed and knew that even if getting through security was quick, getting there early would pay off because of our complimentary airport lounge access.

Airport Check-In Process

Although we did have 2 complimentary checked bags included in our business class tickets, we are proudly team carry-on so we skipped the check-in counter and checked in online on the Iberia app.

It’s a good thing we did because the check-in counter was not open when we arrived early at the airport.

We would have had to wait 30 minutes which would have cut into our airport lounge time!

We have TSA Pre-check and Global Entry which would normally mean that security was a breeze, but for some reason, TSA Pre-check was not showing up on our boarding passes.

I had read that Iberia recently joined the list of airlines that accept TSA Pre-check but all it said on our boarding pass was “Fast Track” which was not available in the U.S. (it was valid on our way back from Madrid).

So since the check-in desk was not yet open and there weren’t any Iberia staff members in sight, I decided we would just wait in the normal security line.

Thankfully, the regular security line was not yet very long.

So in the time that we would have to wait for the check-in desk to open (with a high chance we’d have to go through the regular checkpoint anyway), we were already well on our way to the airport lounge.

Lounge Amenities and Services

Iberia does not have an airport lounge at Miami International Airport.

However, thanks to the One World Alliance we gained access to both the Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge from American Airlines.

We decided to spend our time in the Flagship Lounge which had more amenities and required a special pass to enter.

The Flagship Lounge was great with no shortage of amenities:

Comfortable seating: The lounge had plenty of seating from tables, booths, a workstation area, a movie theatre, and couches. You name it, they had it and a lot of it. The lounge is very spacious and comfortable.

Complimentary food and drinks: As soon as you walk into the lounge, you are greeted with a champagne stand. The perfect way to start the trip!

There was also a buffet of hot and cold dishes, snacks, and all the beverages you could ever want, including alcoholic beverages.

The food was good, but not great. Still, it beats paying for airport fast food.

There was a selection of salads, sandwiches, meats, cheeses, hot dishes, sides and desserts. Later in our stay, they opened a fresh tostada stand as well.

There were also plenty of snacks available, so you would not go hungry!

Wi-Fi and workspaces: High-speed internet and quiet areas were available for getting some work done or catching up on emails.

Entertainment options: TVs, magazines, and newspapers were also available.

Shower facilities: I love it when a lounge has showers!

Even if we hadn’t had access to these lounges, I get a complimentary Priority Pass membership with my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Priority Pass gives me access to a network of lounges all over the world.

But, the Priority Pass lounges at MIA (although very nice) don’t hold a candle to the Flagship Lounge.

Boarding Procedure and Departure from Miami

When it was about 30 minutes before boarding, we left the lounge to head to our gate.

The walk took about 10 minutes and people were already lining up.

As business class passengers we were in the first group to board which went pretty smoothly.

However, once we boarded the plane and got settled, I noticed that many people around me were getting menus and pre-departure beverages but no one had come to me yet.

I tried to get the flight attendant’s attention, but they were busy.

It wasn’t until they came to take my meal order right before take-off that they realized no one had given me a menu or asked me if I wanted a pre-departure beverage.

They apologized profusely and remedied the situation immediately.

In-Flight Experience

The in-flight experience in Iberia business class was what I would expect. The cabin itself was small and a bit outdated, but my seat was comfortable and I had a relaxing flight experience.

Cabin Layout and Seating Arrangement

The Iberia Business Class cabin seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration.

I could have chosen the 2 middle seats so we could sit next to each other, but I love waking up to a window view of the sky in a new place.

Plus, the window seat gave me more privacy. My seat felt spacious and airy, with plenty of room to stretch out and relax.

Seat Comfort and Features

Iberia’s Business Class are fully lie-flat seats, allowing you to adjust them to a position that feels most comfortable.

I found the seat cushion and bedding to be very comfortable.

The seats are equipped with your typical business-class features:

• Power outlets and USB ports for charging devices.
• Personal reading lights so you can read without disturbing your neighbors.
• Adjustable headrests to support your neck and head.
• Storage compartments to keep personal items.

Amenity Kit

In Iberia Business Class we all received an amenity kit which contained everything we needed for a comfortable flight!

• Sleep mask
• Socks
• Ear Plugs
• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Lip Balm
• Moisturizer
• Hair Comb

In-Flight Entertainment Options

Iberia offers an “ok” array of entertainment options.

• Movies: There were only a handful of movies that interested me, but some recently released options were available.
• TV Shows: Some popular series and documentaries.
• Music: I didn’t listen to the music, but it was an option.
• Games: I didn’t play the games, but it was an option.
• Digital Newspapers and Magazines

They had English and Spanish available, and many more languages for subtitles.

In the business class cabin, noise-canceling headphones are provided and complimentary. They worked pretty well.

Food and Beverage Service

Not long into the flight, they began the dinner service. Before meal service, we were given a hot towel for our hands.

They offered a multi-course meal service:

Appetizers: I chose the duck with peaches. It was delicious!

They also serviced bread and olives. I opted for a glass of wine for my beverage. The olives were yummy, but the bread was a bit hard.

Main Courses: Options included meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes.

I chose the fish option which came with a nice sauce, black rice, and vegetables. I thought the fish was a bit dry but mixed in with everything else it wasn’t bad at all.

Desserts: I had the ice cream option which had vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate served with granola and strawberries. I loved it!

The beverage service had a selection of wines including Cava (Spanish sparkling wine), spirits, soft drinks, juices, coffee, and tea.

Cabin Crew Service

Apart from the minor inconvenience of not receiving a pre-departure beverage once I boarded the plane, I thought the cabin crew service was quite adequate.

The crew came by a few times to clear plates and glasses or offer refills. I did not have to get up to ask for anything.

Can I access Wi-Fi on Iberia Business Class flights?

The Iberia Wifi was not great. Complimentary Wifi is available for messaging if you’re a business class passenger or a member of the Iberia Plus program (which is free). However, it was terrible.

I couldn’t get it to work for iMessage or WhatsApp for most of the flight. Finally, I just gave up and went to sleep.

I did not bother with the paid Iberia Wifi since this was an evening flight and I didn’t need to browse or send emails.

Arrival in Madrid

Touching down in Madrid after a long flight went smoothly!

In the morning, breakfast was served about 90 minutes before arrival.

I chose to have the omelet with sausage and vegetables. The omelet was flavorless, but I ate it with the croissant and bread roll.

The coffee and orange juice were very good.

Once we started our descent, the crew announced our arrival, and we landed right on schedule.

Iberia’s Business Class passengers were the first to de-board and the de-boarding process was straightforward and efficient.

Customs and Immigration

Once inside the terminal, signs directed us toward customs and immigration. The process was surprisingly quick, but it was pretty early in the morning.

There were dedicated lines for non-EU passport holders, which helped in managing the crowd.

The officers were professional yet friendly, asking standard questions about our stay. With plenty of kiosks available, the wait time was minimal.

Currency Exchange

We rarely exchange currency before an international trip. When traveling to Europe, we always get cash out of a bank ATM at the airport.

In the Madrid airport, we used a CaixaBank ATM. They have several ATMs throughout the airport.

I never let the ATM convert the currency for me.

I took out 50 euros from the ATM. The amount taken out of my account would have been $67 with all their fees and conversion.

Instead, I paid $56.

My bank reimburses me for ATM fees. But if even they had not it still would have been cheaper than letting the ATM do the conversion.

Do you need cash in Spain?

During our stay, we rarely used cash. In all 3 cities we visited (Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona), it seemed like a cashless society.

We were able to use our credit card and actually I used mobile pay most of the time.

So, I would say that its important to have some cash on you, but you may find that you don’t need to use it most of the time.

Transportation to our hotel in Madrid

Our hotel was located in Plaza de España. Normally, I wouldn’t mind taking public transportation.

We were already planning to share a metro pass. But with our luggage, we opted to grab a taxi instead.

The taxi cost was $36 and the most expensive option. Here are your options:

Metro: The easiest and most economical way is to take the metro. The trip would have taken 40-45 minutes. Check Google or CityMapper for routes to your hotel.

Bus: The Express Aeropuerto (Airport Express) bus runs 24 hours a day, but keep in mind that the rest of the buses run from 6.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m., varying according to the line. Honestly, I’d pick the metro over the bus.

Taxi: Taxis are available outside all airport terminals. The taxi ride during rush hour traffic takes about 25 minutes and has a flat rate to the city center.

Ride-sharing: FREENOW, Uber, and Cabify operate in Madrid. Since the taxis were a flat rate to our destination, I didn’t bother with a ride-share service.

Final Thoughts

Overall, flying business class with Iberia from Miami to Madrid was a wonderful experience.

The comfort, service, and food were awesome for a business-class flight that cost me less than $300.

Yes, the free WiFi sucked. But I didn’t plan to use it anyway so it wasn’t a deal breaker.

If given the opportunity, I would fly Iberia Business Class again.

Traveling between Madrid and Seville is a very popular route and I believe the best mode of transportation is the high-speed train.

I traveled for 12 nights in Spain visiting Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona, and used planes and trains to get from city to city.

So in this guide, I’ll take you through the process of booking the high-speed train from Madrid to Seville.

You’ll also get a detailed overview of the Iryo service, onboard amenities, and travel tips to make your journey as smooth as possible.

Why the high speed from Madrid to Seville?

When traveling from Madrid to Seville you have a few options. When I’m planning transportation the first thing I do is check out the possible options on the Rome2Rio website.

High-Speed Train (Iryo or Renfe AVE)

• Duration: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
• Cost: Around €30 to €120, depending on the class of service and how far in advance tickets are booked.

Flight (Domestic Airlines like Iberia Express or Vueling)

• Duration: About 1 hour (excluding time for airport check-in and security).
• Cost: Approximately €50 to €100, which may vary greatly with booking time and availability.

Bus (Companies like Socibus)

• Duration: About 6 hours.
• Cost: Around €20 to €30.

Car Rental or Rideshare

• Duration: Approximately 5 to 6 hours depending on the route and traffic.
• Cost: Variable; fuel costs around €50 to €70, plus rental fees if applicable.

For us, it was between flying or taking the high-speed train. We wanted to maximize our time in Seville and the bus, car rental or rideshare option would have severely cut into our time with very little cost savings.

Ultimately, we chose the high-speed train.

I find that trains are more comfortable and convenient than flying. There’s ample legroom, onboard amenities, and the freedom to move around which is nicer than the confined spaces of airplanes.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about the extra hassle of extensive security and strict luggage allowance.

Taking the train not only made our trip more enjoyable gave us the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful Spanish landscapes along the way.

Why we chose Iryo

After deciding to take the high-speed train, the next step was to figure out which train company to use and then book the train.

The route from Madrid to Seville is mainly operated by Renfe (Spain’s national railway company) and the newer operator, Iryo.

Renfe

Renfe AVE (Alta Velocidad Española): Renfe Ave is the most well-known and widely used high-speed train service in Spain. These trains offer various classes of service, including Básic (Basic), Elige (Pick & Mix), Elige Comfort or Prémium (Premium).

Renfe Avlo: Avlo is Renfe’s low-cost high-speed train, similar to AVE in speed and duration but with fewer amenities and lower prices. It’s a no-frills service with a focus on affordability.

You can find both AVE and Avlo options on the Renfe AVE website.

Renfe Avant: Avant is a medium-distance high-speed rail, its service bridges the gap between local and long-distance travel. It’s more for travelers making daily or frequent trips, but could be a good option.

Iryo

Iryo is newer to Spain’s rail network. It has one type of train (while Renfe offers many), but offers 3 classes of service— Initial, Singularly You, and Infinite Bistro—each caters to different levels of comfort and convenience.

Unlike Renfe’s traditional offerings, Iryo’s trains are known for their contemporary design and eco-friendly operations, utilizing 100% renewable energy sources.

Iryo offers fewer daily services than Renfe but compensates with a commitment to quality and passenger experience.

The travel time on Iryo matches the speed of Renfe’s AVE service, so it was hard to choose between the two companies.

I liked the fact that Iryo was newer and their booking options were simpler.

During the planning process for this trip, I was given so many options that it could get pretty overwhelming. Sometimes, the simplest is the best.

How we booked Iryo

As you know, we ultimately chose Iryo. Although Renfe has a lot of options, Iryo is newer with a focus on comfort and convenience.

Now it was time to book!

When booking, the price varied depending on the date and time you booked.

I started looking about 4 months in advance which helped with the pricing. The earlier you book the cheaper the fare price.

Iryo offered 3 different ticket types or “classes”:

Infinite: $33.56

• Changes: Requires a fee and notice.
• Cancellation/Refund: 80% refund if canceled before 7 days; 70% after. No missed train allowance.
• Comfort: Standard reclining seat with individual armrests.
• Luggage: Standard carry-on and cabin suitcase allowance.

Singularly You: $58.53

• Changes: Free on the day of travel.
• Cancellation/Refund: Higher refund rates than Infinite and allows for missed train rebooking for a fee.
• Comfort: XL seat that is fully ergonomic with extra space.
• Luggage: Includes an additional large suitcase.

Infinite Bistro: $84.28

• Changes: Free on the day of travel.
• Cancellation/Refund: Highest flexibility and refund rates, minimal fee for missed train.
• Comfort: Same premium seat as Singularly You.
• Luggage: Similar to Singularly You but includes pet travel.
• Additional: Includes a full meal service with quality service.

This percentage price difference between the 3 classes was quite significant.

The increase from Initial to Singularly You was approximately 74.4%.

The increase from the Initial to Infinite Bistro was approximately 151.1%.

This was pretty early on in the trip, so we didn’t need all of the extra amenities and flexibility offered by the premium classes so we chose Initial for this trip.

But for our Iryo train from Barcelona to Madrid, we chose the Infinite Bistro ticket and loved it!

Getting to Madrid Atocha Station

The train was departing from Madrid Atocha Station, one of the largest railway stations in Madrid. Our hotel was located at Plaza de España about 20-30 minutes away from the station.

There were a few options for getting to the station:

By Metro: We had purchased a 10-journey ticket for Madrid’s metro to share, but with all of our luggage, we did opt to use it.

From Plaza de España station (Line 10) we would transfer to Line 3 at Plaza de España, and then switch to Line 1 at Sol directly to Atocha Station. This route usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

By Bus: Several bus routes also connect Plaza de España to Atocha, it would have taken a bit longer, generally around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Again, with the luggage, it was not ideal.

By Taxi or Rideshare: We decided to take a taxi via the FREENOW app from Plaza de España to Atocha which was about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

I loved using FREENOW, the app operates pretty similar to Uber in terms of calling a taxi and paying with the app.

Our taxi was $14.47 and definitely the most expensive option, but also the most convenient.

Check-in Process

The check-in process was simple. We didn’t really have to check-in.

We had printed out our tickets in advance, but I’m sure you could use the QR code on your phone.

We didn’t need to check bags so all we did was go through security and wait for our train platform to be announced which was about 20 minutes before boarding.

We arrived at the station too early, they will not let you through security until about an hour in advance. but I would rather get there early than be running late.

I also did not know how the traffic would be.

The station wasn’t the nicest but there were plenty of food options available for us while we waited to go through security.

Onboard Experience

The boarding and onboard experience was great!

We didn’t have any challenges with boarding and I found our seats comfortable with plenty of legroom.

There is a cafe coach with refreshments. But we already had breakfast and snacks with us, we didn’t need to purchase anything on the train.

I was able to get some work done with the Wifi and if you brought your own device they had entertainment options available.

Overall, it was a very comfortable and peaceful ride, the 2.5 hours went by quickly!

Arriving in Seville Santa Justa Station

Once we arrived in Seville, we headed to the taxi line. I will say that the station in Seville seemed a lot nicer than the station in Madrid.

We didn’t check any bags, so it was a smooth departure.

Transportation from the Station

We took a taxi which cost about $12 to our hotel in the Arenal area.

Taxis: There was a taxi line directly outside the station and was a convenient way to get to our hotel.

Bus: Several city bus lines are operating from outside the station. They can take you to different parts of Seville. We didn’t need public transportation during out time in Seville, so I didn’t want to bother looking into it too much.

Tram: Seville’s tram service, the MetroCentro, runs close to the station and can be a quick way to reach the city center.

Renting a Car: I don’t think you need to rent a car if you’re planning to explore the city center. But if you plan to explore the outside of the city, there are car rental options.

We loved it!

In this post, I’ll be sharing our flight from Seville to Barcelona on Vueling, a budget airline based out of Spain.

Whether you’re looking to save some money, travel comfortably, or just want a hassle-free journey, I’ve got you covered.

From booking our tickets to landing in Barcelona, I’ll provide you with all the essential tips and insights to make your travel smooth and enjoyable.

Getting to Barcelona from Seville: Your Options

Since we planned to start and end in Madrid, we mapped out a route that would take us from Madrid to Seville, then onward to Barcelona, and finally back to Madrid.

The longest leg of our journey based on distance, was from Seville to Barcelona so I used the site Rom2Rio to check out my transportation options:

Flying: This would be the quickest route with the travel time being around 1.5 hours. There were several airlines to choose from, including Vueling, Ryanair, and Iberia.

Fares ranged from €30 to €150 one-way.

High-Speed Train (AVE): The AVE train by Renfe would be around 5.5 hours.

The fares are typically between €60 to €150.

Bus: The most budget-friendly and the slowest, with trips around 14 hours.

Fares ranged from €30 to €60.

Car Rental: This wasn’t an option for us since we did not plan to rent a car at all while in Spain. The drive would take about 9 hours.

Travel times above are only estimates, it could take less or more time.

Based on what we found, we decided to fly—it was simply the fastest way to make the most of our time in Spain.

Plus, when we weighed the costs against taking a high-speed train, flying turned out to be just as economical. Considering that the train would take four times longer, choosing to fly seemed like a no-brainer for us.

Why we chose Vueling

Once we settled on flying, the next task was to pick the best route and airline before booking the flight.

Ryanair and Vueling were by far the top choices, offering the best flights between Seville and Barcelona. I took a closer look and compared both airlines to see which one would best meet our needs for this trip.

Routes and Network: Both airlines have big networks within Spain and offer direct flights from Seville Airport (SVQ) to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN).

Pricing: I noticed that Ryanair offered lower base fares than Vueling, but they were more stringent on their baggage policies and they had more add-on options when booking.

So although Vueling’s base fares were higher their pricing is much more straightforward forward, making the booking process pretty smooth.

Service and Comfort: From my research, it seemed that Vueling would offer more in terms of flight comfort and service. As someone who highly values comfort and convenience, this appealed to me.

Reliability and Punctuality: Both Ryanair and Vueling are generally reliable, but I read that Ryanair is ranked a smidge higher than Vueling among other European low-cost carriers.

Loyalty Programs: Loyalty programs are a significant factor for me, as I’m a big points and miles enthusiast.

One thing that I liked about Vueling is their codeshare partnership with both Iberia and British Airways, this means that I could earn Avios on my flight.

And since we used Avios to book our roundtrip business class flights from the Miami to Madrid, this was pretty cool!

Also, given that this flight to Barcelona would come after already spending six nights in Spain, I knew that we would likely need to check our bags.

Although we are proudly on team carry-on, having the flexibility to check bags is important for us, especially if we pick up a few souvenirs along the way.

However, if I knew we could be traveling lighter, I would have opted to try Ryanair because it also seemed like a good choice for a short flight from Seville to Barcelona.

The Vueling Booking Process

Then it was time to book!

I booked the flights directly on the Vueling website through Google Flights.

When deciding on the best flight to book, we didn’t have flexibility on the day we could travel, but we did have plenty of choices for departure time.

Which flight did we book? We chose a morning flight because not only do I prefer flying early due to fewer delays and issues, but it also means we could spend more time in Barcelona on our first day.

How far in advance did we book? I set flight alerts on Google Flights six months in advance and ended up booking our flights—about four months in advance.

Seat Selection: For a little extra comfort, we chose the Space Plus seats in the 3rd row for an additional $26 per person.

Was this necessary? No.

However, the price did include priority boarding and checked bags, which came in handy.

In total, we spent about $153 per person, which covered checked bags, access to the overhead locker, priority boarding, and extra legroom.

Booking Tips:

• Timing is everything: Early morning flights, like those at 6 am or 7 am, tended to be more budget-friendly and less delays or cancelations.
• Pack smart: Traveling light could have cut our costs even further, as fares were cheaper without checked bags or the need for overhead locker space.
• Plan ahead: Given our experience, booking last minute doesn’t usually work out cheaper, especially without flexible travel dates. Booking four months in advance was ideal for us.

Getting to Seville Airport

To get to the Seville Airport we opted for the quickest way which is by taxi.

While in Spain I used the FREENOW app exclusively for the very few cars we needed during our 12-night trip. The taxi ride from our hotel to the Seville airport was about $40.

The taxi was not the most budget-friendly option, but since we had our luggage and didn’t need any cars during our 4-night stay we decided that the comfort and convenience were worth it.

The more budget-friendly option would have been the EA (Especial Aeropuerto) bus line which offers direct service between the city center and the airport with stops.

A one-way ticket is €5 and tickets are purchased on the bus.

Vueling Check-In Process

Checking in for our flight was smooth and easy.

Once we booked our flight, we had the option to check in and were given our boarding passes months in advance.

I’m not sure if that’s typical so definitely check to see if you need to check in the day before your flight.

I checked the Vueling app the day before and we were good to go! Our boarding passes were already available.

At the Airport

Once we arrived at the airport, we were happy to see that there was no line at the check-in/bag drop-off counters. One of the perks of having an early morning flight!

We checked our bags and headed for the security checkpoint.

In Spain, the priority service that lets you skip the regular security line is called Fast Track. Fast Track was not an option with our tickets, but we didn’t need it. It took us less than 5 minutes to get through security.

Lounge Access at Seville Airport

Although we were flying a budget airline, I was able to get access to a Priority Pass lounge at SVQ.

How?

I get complimentary access to Priority Pass Lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, and Capital One Lounges with my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Now, Priority Pass lounges can be hit or miss. However, this lounge was not bad!

There were a good amount of food and beverage options and a full bar (not that we needed it so early in the morning).

There was also plenty of seating available (it filled up quickly). And coincidentally the lounge was located directly across from our boarding gate!

Boarding Process and In-Flight Experience

Since our tickets included priority, we were among the first to board the plane.

We found that the boarding process was quick and efficient. Everyone boarded the plane so quickly that they closed the doors in time for an early departure.

Of course, the in-flight experience was no frills as I would expect with a budget airline. However, the seats were comfortable and it was nice to have the extra legroom even just for a short flight.

Food and drinks were available for purchase, but we grabbed complimentary soft drinks from the lounge. Airport lounge access for the win!

If you wanted in-flight entertainment you needed to use your own device and Wi-Fi was available for a fee. The flight was about 1.5 hours so the time went by quickly.

Arriving in Barcelona: How to get to your hotel

After 1.5 hours we arrived in Barcelona for our 4-night itinerary!

The Barcelona-El Prat Airport was quite large so it probably took us about 30 minutes to get off the plane (we were among the first to deplane) and get to baggage claim.

But we needed transportation to our hotel in central Barcelona.

We opted for a taxi which was about $43.

Grabbing a taxi was easy, there was a dedicated line at the airport.

Here are some budget-friendly options from Barcelona-El Prat Airport:

Aerobus: There is an express bus service that runs from both terminals and reaches central locations like Plaça Catalunya in about 35 minutes. Tickets can be purchased in advance online.

Train: The R2 Nord railway connects the airport to central stations such as Passeig de Gràcia and Barcelona Sants. Trains leave roughly every 30 minutes.

Metro: Line L9 Sud of the Barcelona Metro connects the airport to the city. It’s a bit slower but integrates well if you’re staying near a metro line.

If it wasn’t for the amount of luggage that we had, I would have opted to take the metro as we had already purchased a pass online to use during our stay.

Bottom Line

Wrapping up our journey from Seville to Barcelona with Vueling, I can confidently say that the experience exceeded our expectations.

The early morning flight allowed us to maximize our first day in Barcelona and opting for the Space Plus seats provided some extra comfort and convenience that although weren’t necessary helped us arrive in Barcelona refreshed.

If you’re planning a similar route, I highly recommend considering Vueling for a seamless, enjoyable, and efficient flight.

It’s not just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about starting (or continuing) your adventure on a high note!

But how did we get around 3 major cities in totally different regions of Spain?

We took trains and planes!

After spending 4 nights in Barcelona, we needed to get back to Madrid for our flight back home.

While doing some research we decided that the best mode of transportation would be the high speed train from Barcelona-Sants to Madrid Atocha.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how we chose our tickets and the experience at both the station and on the train.

Why we chose Iryo

When I was researching my train options I found that several train companies were offering a high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid. On a high-speed train, the quickest journey would take about 2.5 hours.

Renfe AVE (Alta Velocidad Española): Renfe is the most well-known and widely used high-speed train service in Spain. These trains offer various classes of service, including Básic (Basic), Elige (Pick & Mix), or Prémium (Premium).

Renfe Avlo: Avlo is Renfe’s low-cost high-speed train, similar to AVE in speed and duration but with fewer amenities and lower prices. It’s a no-frills service with a focus on affordability. You can find both AVE and Avlo options on the Renfe AVE website.

Ouigo Spain: A subsidiary of the French SNCF. Similar to Avlo, Ouigo is a more economical option. The trains are fast and offer basic services, including free Wi-Fi and entertainment options.

Iryo: We ultimately chose Iryo which focuses on high-speed service with competitive pricing but with the promise of comfort and efficiency.

I did some research on Rome2Rio and RailEurope before making a decision.

We chose Iryo based on the price, amenities, available departure times, and trip duration.

Although all the above are considered high-speed trains, some travel times were longer than others so keep that in mind when doing your comparison.

How we booked Iryo

When booking, the price varied depending on the date and time you booked. Our dates were not flexible and we were looking to depart by noon at the latest.

However, we did start looking about 4 months in advance which helped with the pricing. The earlier you book the cheaper the fare price.

Iryo offered 3 different ticket types or “classes”:

Infinite: $22.97

• Changes: Requires a fee and notice.
• Cancellation/Refund: 80% refund if canceled before 7 days; 70% after. No missed train allowance.
• Comfort: Standard reclining seat with individual armrests.
• Luggage: Standard carry-on and cabin suitcase allowance.

Singularly You: $40.84

• Changes: Free on the day of travel.
• Cancellation/Refund: Higher refund rates than Infinite and allows for missed train rebooking for a fee.
• Comfort: XL seat that is fully ergonomic with extra space.
• Luggage: Includes an additional large suitcase.

Infinite Bistro: $58.81

• Changes: Free on the day of travel.
• Cancellation/Refund: Highest flexibility and refund rates, minimal fee for missed train.
• Comfort: Same premium seat as Singularly You.
• Luggage: Similar to Singularly You but includes pet travel.
• Additional: Includes a full meal service with quality service.

Although our travel plans were set and we didn’t need flexible tickets, we opted for the Infinite Bistro ticket because it included unlimited beverages and full meal service.

I knew we would be hungry, enjoy larger more comfortable seats, and at this point in our trip (we had already spent 10 days in Spain) would likely have more luggage (souvenirs!).

We definitely could have just opted for Infinite, but we had already taken Iryo from Madrid to Seville in that ticket class, so I wanted to compare the two options.

Getting to Barcelona- Sants Station

Barcelona-Sants Station is one of the main transportation hubs in Barcelona and is well-connected and accessible by various modes of public transport.

Here are some options for getting to the station:

Metro: Barcelona-Sants Station is served by two major metro lines:

• L3 (Green Line): This line connects you to key points like Plaça Espanya, Plaça Catalunya, and the district of Gràcia.
• L5 (Blue Line): This line connects the station to the Sagrada Família, Diagonal, and other important areas.

Bus: Numerous city bus lines stop at or near Barcelona-Sants, providing easy access from many parts of the city. Key bus routes include 27, 32, 78, 109, and H10, among others.

We had used a 2-day metro pass during our time in Barcelona so we were very familiar with public transportation and found it an easy affordable way to get around.

Taxi: Ultimately, we decided to get a taxi because lugging around our suitcases on public transportation was not our ideal of a good time.

It was easy to book and pay for a taxi with the FREENOW app. It operates very similar to Uber and is available throughout Europe. It’s super convenient!

Check-In Process

The check-in process for the train is not like it is for an airplane flight. There’s no need to get on an app or go to a kiosk at the train station.

Once we purchased our tickets online (months in advance), we were sent tickets with a QR code. We printed out our tickets back home and brought them with us to Spain, but we totally could have just brought up the QR code on our phones.

Once we arrived at the train station, we looked at the boards for our train number and departure time.

It was over an hour before our departure time so the platform number was not yet assigned.

You can’t go through security until about an hour before your train leaves, but there’s no need to worry about waiting around.

The station has plenty of spots to grab a bite, including a McDonald’s where you can sit back and relax with some food. Once your platform is announced and you know which gate to head to, you’ll be all set to go!

Once through security and about 30 minutes before departure, they started to line up all passengers based on their assigned coach.

I will say that we found the process to be very smooth. The staff was very kind and super helpful.

Onboard Experience

Once we got settled into our coach and found our seats, we were really happy with the spacious cabin and how our seats were set up. We opted for seats facing each other, but there were also options for single and double seating.

The Wi-Fi on board was pretty solid—I managed to knock out some work. While they did have entertainment options if you brought your own device, we ended up just soaking in the views and listening to a podcast.

Not long after we started moving, they began the food service.

We enjoyed some gazpacho, a meat and cheese plate with Russian salad, a bread roll, and some chocolate for dessert.

They also served complimentary wine and soft drinks in actual glasses, which added a touch of class to the meal.

We had picked our food when we booked the tickets. It was a light lunch—nothing too heavy but definitely more substantial than a typical snack.

Throughout the journey, they kept offering coffee and more drinks.

Overall, it was a super relaxing ride. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure we were comfortable throughout.

Arriving in Madrid Atocha Station

Once we arrived back in Madrid, we had several options for getting to our hotel located on Gran Via.

Here are some transportation options:

Metro: Madrid’s Metro system is efficient and connects Atocha Station to numerous parts of the city. The station is served by Line 1 (light blue), which can take you directly to the city center and other key areas.

We still had some trips left from our 10 journey pass (we shared the pass), but we had too much luggage to take the metro.

We used Google Maps to help us get around Spain with public transportation.

Cercanías (Commuter Trains): Atocha is a main hub for the Cercanías trains, which are ideal for reaching nearby areas or suburbs quickly. They also provide connections to other major train stations in Madrid, such as Chamartín.

Buses: Several city bus lines stop at Atocha, providing access to different districts within Madrid. The bus station outside the terminal offers both local and long-distance services.

Taxis: There’s a well-organized taxi rank outside the station. Taxis are available 24/7 and can be a convenient option if you have heavy luggage or if you prefer a direct route to your destination.

Since we had a lot of luggage we opted to take a taxi from the train station to the Hyatt Centric Madrid located on Gran Via. The cost was $17.22.

Final Thoughts

We really enjoyed our Infinite Bistro experience. From the comfortable seating arrangements to the impressive onboard services, every aspect of our trip was designed to enhance our travel experience.

The beautiful scenic views along with our meal and attentive service made our journey from Barcelona to Madrid after 10 days in Spain a very pleasant experience.

I would highly recommend Iryo for your train travel around Spain. We traveled with them twice during our 12-night trip to 3 cities and the experience was a delight each time.

Although, I think there are several attractions worth paying for, there are many ways to enjoy the beauty and experience the culture of Barcelona for free.

In this post, you’ll find the top 10 free things to do in Barcelona! If you’re strategic and plan, you’ll get to experience the attractions for which Barcelona is most famous.

So let’s get to it!

1. Free Museum Days

Many museums in Barcelona offer free entry on certain days or at specific times.

Here’s a list of some popular museums in Barcelona with “free of charge” days:

Museu Picasso: Offers free entry on the first Sunday of each month and other select days of the year. Always check the website for an updated list of days that are free of charge. Prior reservations are required.

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC): Free admission every Saturday from 3:00 PM onwards, and on the first Sunday of each month. Always check the website for an updated list of days that are free of charge. Prior reservations are required.

Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA): Free entry every Sunday after 3:00 pm or with a Barcelona Card.

Maritime Museum (Museu Marítim): Offers free entry on Sundays after 3:00 PM. Per the website “The exhibits in the entrance hall and the Espai Mirador are free of charge.”

CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona): Free entry every Sunday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and other select days of the year. Always check the website for an updated list of days that are free of charge. Prior reservations are required.

Museu Blau (Natural Science Museum): Free entry on the first Sunday of each month and every Sunday after 3:00 PM.

These free entry times typically apply to all visitors, although some museums might also offer additional free days for specific groups such as students, seniors, or residents.

It’s always a good idea to check the museum’s official website or contact them directly for the most accurate and current information.

If you visit during the free-of-charge day and hours you will not pay admission fees at the museum. Keep in mind that you may need to make reservations in advance and schedules are subject to change.

2. La Rambla

La Rambla is Barcelona’s most famous boulevard. It is about 1.2 kilometers long and stretches from Plaça de Catalunya to the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell.

If it’s your first time in Barcelona I think this is a must-visit. Yeah, it’s touristy and there will probably be a lot of people if you go in the afternoon or evening but there’s so much to see!

There are shops, cafes, and street performers as you walk down the boulevard. You’ll pass by sights like Gran Teatre del Liceu and you should pop into the Mercat de la Boqueria for a snack or some lunch.

3. Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is where the ancient city of Barcino (The Roman name for Barcelona) once stood.

We stayed next to the Gothic Quarter when we visited Barcelona and loved the narrow medieval winding streets. It was cool to walk by remnants of Roman walls and explore so many great museums and landmarks.

We walked to Plaça del Rei, a historic square with many significant royal events. You can also check out the labyrinth which is the Jewish Quarter. There’s a lot to see!

Walking through the Gothic Quarter is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the layers of history that have shaped Barcelona.

4. Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is located at the foot of Montjuïc Hill near Plaça Espanya.

It’s a beautiful and colorful display with lights and music. You’ll want to check the website for the show schedule because it varies and the fountain has been known to shut down if there is a drought in the city.

While in the area, you can visit the Olympic Ring, the Fira Barcelona Montjuïc, and stop into the Arenas de Barcelona which used to be a bull ring.

5. Barceloneta Beach

Barceloneta Beach in the traditional fishing district of the same name is a fun and relaxing activity in Barcelona that won’t cost you a penny.

Access to the beach is free, but you can rent beach umbrellas and loungers. The beach has public restrooms and showers.

We enjoyed taking a stroll along the promenade and there are plenty of restaurants serving fresh seafood and great views of the Mediterranean.

The beach is also near other attractions such as the Barceloneta Market, the History Museum of Catalonia, and the Port Vell Marina.

6. El Born Cultural Center

El Born Cultural and Memorial Center is a 19th-century marketplace. It was restored and repurposed as a cultural center in 2013.

It holds significant historical importance as it stands over archaeological remains of the city from the 1700s. It’s a great way to get a glimpse into Barcelona’s past and gaining entry is free. They even have a free audio guide!

7. The Bunkers del Carmel

The Bunkers del Carmel, or “the Bunkers,” are at the top of Turó de la Rovira hill in the Carmel neighborhood. Originally, these were anti-aircraft fortifications built during the Spanish Civil War to defend Barcelona from air raids.

It’s a popular spot that offers panoramic, 360-degree views of the entire city, from the Sagrada Família to the Mediterranean Sea.

The climb to the top is steep and requires a bit of effort, but the breathtaking views are well worth it. Access to the Bunkers del Carmel is free and a perfect way to see amazing views of Barcelona!

8. Parc de la Ciutadella

Parc de la Ciutadella referred to as the city’s green lung is a picturesque park, established in the late 19th century on the grounds of a former citadel.

You’ll see the stunning Cascada Monumental, a baroque fountain partially designed by Antoni Gaudí (Sagrada Familia). There’s also the city’s zoo, the Catalan Parliament, and several museums, including the Museum of Natural Science and the Geological Museum.

9. Visit the Churches

Barcelona is renowned for its medieval churches. Both the majestic Barcelona Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter and the serene Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in El Born are worth a visit during your time in Barcelona.

If you want to visit the interior of these churches for free, you’ll want to attend a service. Otherwise, there will be a fee to take a tour.

However, even if you don’t go inside, the exteriors alone are beautiful and the surrounding neighborhoods have so much to do.

For example, the Barcelona Cathedral is surrounded by Roman ruins and charming streets lined with cafes and shops in the Gothic Quarter.

Before you go, make sure to check the websites for the most up-to-date visiting information and plan ahead.

10. Free Walking Tours

A great way to see a city like Barcelona is to embark on a free walking tour! These tours will not require a charge to book, but at the end of the tour, you choose how much you feel the tour was worth.

I highly recommend that you do these tours at the beginning of your stay in Barcelona so that you can get a good lay of the land. Plus you’ll learn so much about the city!

Alternatively, if you’re not into walking tours we enjoy the Hop On Hop Off Bus tours!

These tours are very affordable and you can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. My favorite part is that you can get off and get back on at any of the stops.

On our last day in Barcelona, we were exhausted from walking so we just took the bus tour around its full tour loop once before deciding to get off.

Barcelona is truly an amazing experience and one that you cannot miss when planning a trip to Spain.

I love how you can get a taste of Spanish and Catalan cultures infused with Roman influence all in one place.

But can you spend 4 days in Barcelona and stick to a budget?

Absolutely!

It is totally possible to visit Barcelona in 4 days and still make it affordable.

We spent 4 nights in Barcelona and not only did we stay within a budget, we experienced the rich culture, incredible architecture, and delicious food, but without sacrificing quality.

But how much did we spend for 4 nights for 2 people?

Hotel (4 nights) – $547.44 about $136/night

Food – $368 about $92/day

Tours and Entertainment – $270

Transportation – $94

Total – $1,280 or $640 per person

If you’re looking at that budget above and thought “Woah, that’s way more than I want to spend”, don’t worry I’ve got you covered in this post too.

For us, budget travel does not mean cheap travel. You can still have quality experiences and spend less money.

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how we did it so you can make the most of your trip to Barcelona, enjoying all the sites while keeping your wallet happy.

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Barcelona

On your first day in Barcelona, you’ll want to take it easy and get a feel for the city.

On our arrival day in Barcelona, we flew in from Seville and landed around noon.

We arrived at our hotel on Via Laietana around 2 pm and our room was ready.

We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring Plaça de Catalunya, walking down La Rambla and through Plaça Reial.

We grabbed some lunch at one of the many sandwich shops. We ate a lot of ham sandwiches!

On our first evening in Barcelona, we had dinner at Ohla Barcelona and then drinks at their rooftop bar.

I would recommend reservations because even on a slow and gloomy day there is a line to get up to the rooftop bar.

Day 1 Barcelona Suggested Itinerary

Morning

In the morning, head over to the La Rambla.

You can pop into Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria (food market) for a bite to eat.

The Mercat de Sant Josep is a great spot to sample Catalan dishes like tortilla Española or fresh fruit juices.

As you stroll down La Rambla you’ll find various street performers, local vendors selling handmade crafts, local souvenirs, and unique art pieces.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu (the oldest theatre in Barcelona) and Palau de la Virreina (cultural center building) are all points of interest you can expect to see as you walk down La Rambla.

La Rambla is a touristy area, but we were ok with that because we are tourists. LOL

When we visit a new city, we like to see the main points of interest even if it is considered touristy.

Afternoon

If you’re up for it, spend the afternoon exploring the Gothic Quarter.

It’s like stepping back in time with its narrow Medieval Streets.

There are hidden gems on every corner from shops to quaint cafes.

This district is home to the stunning Barcelona Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

Gothic Quarter sights and landmarks:

Barcelona Cathedral (Catedral de Barcelona): A stunning example of Gothic architecture, this cathedral is known for its intricate façade and beautiful cloister.

Plaça del Rei: A historic square where you’ll find the Palau Reial Major and the Museu d’Història de Barcelona.

Plaça Sant Jaume: This central square has City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat. It’s the place that hosts many festivities.

Picasso Museum (Museu Picasso): Located on Montcada Street, this museum has one of the most extensive collections of artworks by Pablo Picasso.

Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar: A great display of Catalan Gothic architecture.

Roman Walls: Parts of the ancient Roman walls that once surrounded Barcelona can still be seen in the Gothic Quarter. It’s magnificent!

Plaça Reial: A square with a fountain in the center surrounded by restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Temple of Augustus: Inside the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, there are four columns from the Temple of Augustus, dating back to the Roman period.

El Call (Jewish Quarter): This medieval Jewish quarter tells the story of Barcelona’s Jewish community before their expulsion in the 15th century.

Evening

In the evening, you may want to explore the Parc de la Ciutadella.

It’s the greenest oasis in the heart of Barcelona with many pathways and sights.

There’s a small lake where you can rent rowboats, see the grand Cascada Monumental fountain, and several sculptures. The park also has street performers like classical Spanish guitar or acrobatic shows.

For dinner, there are plenty of options in the Gothic Quarter just north of the park.

Alternative Evening itinerary – You could do dinner and a rooftop bar like we did on our first day.

How much will you spend?

If you want to tour the Catedral de Barcelona the ticket prices start at €14.00.

Free admission times are available for the Museu Picasso, but you’ll need to book in advance.

There are also free(ish) walking tours available (tipping is appreciated).

Otherwise, the biggest cost on your first day in Barcelona is food. You should expect to spend between $30-$50 per person each day for meals depending on your food preferences.

Day 2: Gaudi’s Masterpieces

Antoni Gaudí was not only an architect, but he was a visionary.

His distinctive style transformed Barcelona’s landscape and became synonymous with Catalan modernism.

His masterpieces, like Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, showcase his unique approach to architecture.

A visit to Barcelona would not be complete without spending at least one-day admiring Gaudí’s works. He profoundly impacted the city’s cultural and aesthetic heritage.

Day 2 Barcelona Suggested Itinerary

Morning

On the morning of Day 2, you have 2 choices:

Option #1: Park Güell

Park Güell is an architectural wonderland, one of Antoni Gaudí’s most colorful and playful creations.

At the park, you’ll find whimsical structures, vibrant ceramic mosaics, and stone sculptures that embody Gaudí’s imaginative vision.

You can take a guided tour of Park Güell or wander on your own.

Option #2: Casa Batlló

This was the option we chose! Casa Batlló is a home Gaudí redesigned for the wealthy Batlló family.

It is an immersive experience with intricate detail and innovative techniques, the building is truly stunning and fascinating.

We did the most basic tour which included an audio tour.

That was enough for us, but if you want the full experience there are other tiers available.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, I suggest visiting Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished basilica masterpiece.

I would highly recommend a guided tour of Sagrada Familia.

Of course, it is possible to visit without a guided tour, but there is so much symbolism and intricate detail that a guided tour will only enhance your visit.

We did our tour in the afternoon from 3:30 pm-5:30 pm and it was the best time because of how the sun hits the stained glass windows at golden hour.

We did not opt for the optional tower tour, but I have heard amazing things so if you have the time it’s something you may want to consider.

This tour experience was hands down the most fascinating of all the things we did in Barcelona.

Evening

That’s a very long day!

After your tour of the Sagrada Familia, there are many restaurants in the area although they are a bit touristy.

We took the metro back to Via Laietana for the evening. There are honestly so many options that you really can’t go wrong!

How much will you spend?

We purchased a Go City attraction pass which included basic admission to Casa Batlló and our guided tour to Sagrada Familia.

The cost was €67.00 per person for a 2-attraction pass.

Go City has many options and it can be a great money saver to pay one price for a select number of attractions.

However, if you’re not interested in guided tours, you may consider purchasing admission a la carte directly on the attraction websites.

I would recommend pricing things out to see which way is better for you.

We used our 48H metro cards as our mode of transportation and this was the first day we used it.

Day 3: Beaches and Culture

On Day 3 we used our 48H Hola metro pass to grab a bus down to Barceloneta Beach.

We spent the morning strolling down the promenade and had an early lunch at Chiringuito Chambao.

The food and drinks were not impressive, but the view and atmosphere were worth it!

After that, we took the bus back up to the city center and walked around the neighborhoods.

Day 3 Barcelona Suggested Itinerary

Morning

Barceloneta Beach is a beautiful seaside destination and perfect for a relaxing morning in Barcelona!

You can spend the morning strolling along the promenade and stopping in one of the many restaurants and bars serving fresh seafood and traditional Spanish tapas.

If you’re into beach sports, there are beach volleyball courts and watersport rentals like paddleboards and jet skis.

We mostly just walked along the Passeig Marítim and enjoyed the views. It was a beautiful day!

Afternoon and Evening

If you’re not already tired from the beach, I would suggest you spend some time in the Born district.

We stopped at the Mercat de Santa Caterina which is a great spot to taste local Catalan flavors.

One thing we noticed is that you cannot use the restrooms unless you show them a receipt for a purchase from the market. Luckily we kept ours!

If you have time, I would suggest paying a visit to Palau de la Música Catalana.

It’s just a short walk from El Born and is a stunning concert hall.

We took a guided tour and although it was not Gaudí style, it had plenty of symbolism and beauty.

Worth a visit!

How much will you spend?

There are no admission fees for Barceloneta Beach or the food market, but you will spend money on food per your preferences.

Many o museums have free museum days, so if you’re interested you’ll want to check out their website.

We paid about $24 per person for our guided tour of Palau de la Música Catalana. I recommend purchasing online to avoid the line.

Day 4: Tour the rest of Barcelona

On our last day in Barcelona, we decided to take it easy!

Our 48H metro pass was expired so we purchased hop-on-hop-hop-off bus tickets online the day before with Barcelona Bus Turístic.

I love these tours! It’s a great way to sit back and relax while listening to an audio tour around the city.

You can get on and off as many times as you want during the operating hours.

We decided to get on the bus at the Plaça de Catalunya stop and took the blue route for the entire loop getting off at various stops to check out the sights!

Day 4 Barcelona Suggested Itinerary

Morning

Start your last day in Barcelona by visiting the Montjuïc Castle. The castle is on a hill overlooking Barcelona.

The castle is not only beautiful but offers an interesting glimpse into the military history of Barcelona.

If you want a scenic route up to the castle, check out the Montjuïc Cable Car.

Afternoon and Evening

In the afternoon, spend it on the hop on hop off bus and getting off at whatever sights you may have missed or neighborhoods you want to experience.

There are so many options for food and shopping.

How much will you spend?

We spent about $24 per person on the bus tour.

If you choose to visit Montjuïc Castle, there are many options and tours but tickets for general admission start at 12€.

Plan ahead! Free admission days are available.

Getting to Barcelona

When we visited Barcelona we had already spent some time in Spain and had spent 4 nights in Seville.

If you look at Rome2Rio there are a few options to get from Seville to Barcelona.

• Train: 5 Hours and 45 mins direct. $45-$140 per person.
• Fly: 1 Hour and 40 mins direct. $31-$160 per person.
• Drive – varies.

We did not plan to rent a car so our only options were to either take the train or the fly.

The train systems in Spain were very easy, but we did not want to waste an entire day on the train.

Our time is valuable so spending a little more to fly in half the time was worth it for us.

So we decided to fly on Vueling from Seville to Barcelona.

Getting Around Barcelona

Public transport in Barcelona is very affordable!

The metro system in Barcelona is operated by Hola! Barcelona was both affordable and a great experience.

We purchased a Hola BCN travel card which offers unlimited travel on the metro, buses, and other public transport services for a set number of days (2, 3, 4, or 5 days).

We spent €15.75 per person for a 2-day/48H travel pass.

If you purchase in advance you’ll get a little bit of a discount and it was very easy to pick it up at one of the metro station kiosks before taking our first ride on the metro!

As I mentioned earlier we also booked a hop-on hop-off bus tour with Barcelona Bus Turístic.

This is one of my favorite ways to get to know a city on a budget!

Where to Stay in Barcelona

When we’re exploring a new city we love to stay where the action is.

We don’t like to stay outside the city and pay for transportation and out every day.

We save money and time by booking affordable yet central accommodations near the city center.

We also prefer not to stay in hostels or anything with a rating of lower than 3 stars.

So I used Google Maps to find hotels near the city center.

Where we stayed: Hotel HCC Montblanc on Via Laietana seconds away from the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) which is in the heart of Barcelona with a medieval vibe and home to several popular attractions and landmarks.

The Hotel HCC Montblanc is considered a 3-star hotel and is part of a local Spanish hotel chain.

I think the only reason for the lower rating is because of the slightly outdated decor, but it is still very modern and an excellent location.

Why we chose it: We chose to pay cash instead of choosing to stay at a hotel where we could use loyalty rewards.

The hotel’s proximity to the Gothic Quarter, metro stations, and bus stops made it worth it for us.

The fact that we only paid $136/night didn’t hurt.

Free Hotel options using Points and Miles:

• Kimpton Vividora Hotel: This can be booked with IHG Rewards and you’ll get the 4th night free when redeeming with points (if you hold one of their eligible credit cards).
• Renaissance Barcelona Hotel or W Barcelona: Both hotels can be booked with Marriott Bonvoy points.
• Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower or Grand Hyatt Barcelona: Both hotels can be booked with World of Hyatt points.

How can I save money on food in Barcelona?

We found that the food in Barcelona can be very affordable if you know what to look for.

Here are tips for finding cheap food in Barcelona:

• Try the “menu del día,” – this is the menu of the day and usually the most affordable.
• Visit Local Markets – there are many options from snacks to full meals and usually at a great price.
• Tapas and Pintxos – these are small, but filling snacks!
• Share! – larger dishes like paella are perfect for sharing!
• Avoid Tourist Traps – restaurants around the plazas are usually the most expensive, go off the beaten path.

These are must-eat foods to try in Barcelona:

• Paella: Spanish rice with a variety of toppings.
• Tapas: Small plates perfect for sharing. We saw a lot of patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns), and bombas (meat-filled potato balls).
• Pan con Tomate (Pa amb Tomàquet): A simple Catalan dish. It’s just toasted bread rubbed with tomato and topped with olive oil and salt. Delish!
• Fideuà: Similar to paella but made with noodles instead of rice. This is pictured below!
• Crema Catalana: This looks like crème brûlée, but slightly different flavor.
• Botifarra: Traditional Catalan sausage.
• Jamón Ibérico: We ate a lot of ham.
