When my husband and I were planning our 3rd wedding anniversary trip we wanted it to be special, but we also didn’t want to spend a fortune.

We fell in love on our visit to Arizona, it’s the perfect place for a budget-friendly and romantic getaway for couples!

Now, just because you’re on a budget that doesn’t mean your trip can’t be fun, relaxing, and luxurious.

It just means you’ll need to get creative and strategic about what activities you choose.

So in this post, I’ll give you a wide range of activities that will get you outside so you can explore the beauty of Arizona by going on a romantic hike or sipping wine at a vineyard.

If you’re a couple interested in history, visiting Tumacácori National Historical Park or touring the historic Route 66 is right up your alley!

1. Hiking in Sedona

Location: Sedona, Arizona

My husband and I don’t consider ourselves experienced hikers but it’s the best and most affordable way to discover a new place.

Whether you’re a beginner or an avid hiker there’s no better way to explore Arizona than hiking in Sedona.

Arizona has amazing hikes, but we love Sedona for the blend of red rocks, vineyards, and scenic drives.

Here are some recommended hikes:

1. Devil’s Bridge Trail:
   • Location: Devil’s Bridge Trailhead, off Dry Creek Road.
   • What to Expect: This hike is considered moderate difficulty. It’s a 4.2-mile round-trip hike.
2. Cathedral Rock Trail:
   • Location: Cathedral Rock Trailhead, off Back O’ Beyond Road.
   • What to Expect: Cathedral Rock Trail is a short but considered moderate difficulty level due to it’s steep hike. It’s only a 1.5-mile round-trip trail but it gives you unparalleled views.
3. West Fork Trail:
   • Location: West Fork Trailhead, off State Route 89A.
   • What to Expect: This is for couples that are a little bit more serious about hiking! This hike is moderately strenuous and is a 7-mile round-trip hike.

2. Exploring Wine Trails

The only thing better than red rocks and desert is adding rolling vineyards and wine tasting!

Arizona is filled with stunningly beautiful wine country and it’s perfect for the couple looking to relax and soak in the scenery.

I consider exploring wine trails a budget-friendly activity because there are usually no requirements for entry and you can try a variety of wines by opting to share a tasting.

Here are some favorite wine trails in Arizona:

1. Verde Valley Wine Trail:
   • Location: Cottonwood, Sedona, and Jerome.
   • What to Expect: The Verde Valley Wine Trail will take you through Northern Arizona.
   • Our favorite thing to do is stroll through vineyards, order meat gourmet cheese, and listen to live music.
2. Sonoita Wine Trail:
   • Location: Southern Arizona, near Sonoita and Elgin.
   • What to Expect: The Sonoita Wine Trail explores Arizona’s oldest wine-growing region.
   • It’s known for its high-altitude vineyards. Sonoita Vineyards was the first winery established in the area, with several great local wineries in the area.
3. Willcox Wine Trail:
   • Location: Southeastern Arizona, near the town of Willcox.
   • What to Expect: The Willcox Wine Trail has fabulous family-owned wineries like Flying Leap Vineyards and Bodega Pierce.
   • We love how the tasting rooms are in various historic buildings and renovated barns.

3. Visiting National Parks

Arizona is home to 3 national parks, each with its own unique features and elements.

Whenever we visit a new state, we make an effort to explore at least one of its national parks or sites.

Many sites are free to visit, but the designated National parks will have a modest entry fee.

In some cases you will need to make a reservation which can also cost a few dollars.

But there are ways to make it cheaper by purchasing an entrance pass (if you’re planning to visit several within one year), qualifying for a discount, or planning to visit on a free entrance day.

Grand Canyon National Park

Location: Located in northern Arizona, near the town of Flagstaff.

The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.

We opted for a small group tour from Phoenix, but you can venture out to the park on your own and save money on booking a tour.

There are also many tours developed in partnership with the national park that you can check out.

Petrified Forest National Park

Location: Located in northeastern Arizona, near the town of Holbrook.

Petrified Forest National Park preserves one of the largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood in the world.

The park’s Painted Desert has vibrant colors of red, purple, and orange. Very cool!

Saguaro National Park

Location: Located in southern Arizona, near the city of Tucson.

Saguaro National Park is named for the iconic saguaro cactus, which dominates the park’s landscape symbolizing the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

The park is divided into two districts, the Rincon Mountain District (East) and the Tucson Mountain District (West), each has its own distinct scenery and outdoor activities.

The Rincon Mountain District is located to the east of Tucson, while the Tucson Mountain District is located to the west.

Both districts have visitor centers with information on park activities, trails, and ranger-led programs.

4. Exploring Historic Downtowns

Arizona has no shortage of historic downtowns where you can explore the history, architecture, and cultural significance.

We really enjoy strolling through a downtown area with quaint shops, eateries, and coffee shops.

Here are some must-visit historic downtowns in Arizona:

Flagstaff

Location: Mountains of northern Arizona, along Interstate 40.

Flagstaff’s historic downtown has a lively, eclectic vibe, with a mix of Victorian-era buildings, murals, and local shops.

A visit to Flagstaff is not complete unless you check out the galleries like Coconino Center for the Arts and Artist’s Gallery.

Don’t miss out on the craft breweries and farm-to-table restaurants.

For a dose of history, you can take a self-guided walking tour of downtown’s historic landmarks, including the Flagstaff Train Station and the Weatherford Hotel.

Prescott

Location: Located in central Arizona, about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix.

Prescott’s Whiskey Row is historic with Wild West history spots like saloons and shops selling everything from cowboy boots to handmade jewelry.

Check out the Palace Saloon, Arizona’s oldest bar, or the Hassayampa Inn.

Be sure to visit the Sharlot Hall Museum, where you’ll find Prescott’s pioneer heritage and Native American culture.

Jerome

Location: Central Arizona, overlooking the Verde Valley.

Jerome is an old mining town known for historic buildings and stunning panoramic views.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the Jerome State Historic Park, which preserves the town’s mining history and offers guided tours of the Douglas Mansion.

5. Enjoy the Desert Botanical Garden

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

The Desert Botanical Garden is a serene and relaxing way to enjoy nature among a collection of desert plants, there are scenic trails.

I don’t know if it’s because we’re from flat South Florida, but we really enjoy a desert landscape.

The garden has two restaurants where you can enjoy lunch or dinner.

It’s a great way to spend the day!

Cost: General Admission for adults is $16.95 per person.

6. Stargazing at Kitt Peak National Observatory

Location: Kitt Peak, about 56 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona.

The Kitt Peak National Observatory offers various stargazing programs and events.

I would recommend checking out their daytime and nighttime tours where you’ll peer through a telescope to see things like planets, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

Cost: Varies on the tour, I’ve seen them start at $19.95 per person.

7. Touring Tumacácori National Historical Park

Location: Tumacácori, Arizona, approximately 45 miles south of Tucson.

As you enter Tumacácori National Historical Park, you’ll be greeted by the imposing adobe walls of Mission San José de Tumacácori, a centuries-old Spanish colonial church dating back to the late 18th century. Begin your exploration at the park’s visitor center, where you can learn about the history of Tumacácori and the significance of the Spanish missions in the region through exhibits, artifacts, and interactive displays.

Embark on a self-guided tour of the mission grounds, wandering among the weathered adobe walls, crumbling archways, and tranquil courtyards of this historic site.

Follow the Anza Trail to the nearby Tumacácori Museum, where exhibits explore the park’s natural and cultural history, or hike along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, which retraces the footsteps of Spanish explorers and early settlers.

Founded by Spanish missionaries in the late 17th century, Mission San José de Tumacácori served as a center of religious and cultural life for the local O’odham and Yaqui communities for over a century.

Today, Tumacácori offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the remnants of this once-thriving mission complex, from the towering church facade to the remains of the convent and cemetery.

8. Relaxing at El Dorado Hot Springs

Location: 41225 Indian School Rd, Tonopah, AZ 85354

Arizona is home to several natural hot springs that are in remote and pristine locations.

It’s an affordable way to relax and rejuvenate among the serenity that Arizona has to offer.

El Dorado Hot Springs is about 50 miles west of Phoenix and features several natural hot spring pools surrounded by desert flora and fauna.

There are private and shared pool options. The hot springs are available seasonally from October – June.

Cost: Private Pool $20-$40 per hour or Shared Pool for $15 per person per hour.

9. Exploring Ghost Towns

If you and your partner are into the spooky, Arizona has what you’re looking for!

Check out these Ghost towns in Arizona.

Jerome

Location: Located in the Verde Valley, about 100 miles north of Phoenix.

Jerome used to be a copper mining town, but the mine closed in the 1950s so most of the population left.

Now, it’s just an eerie place with a lot of abandoned buildings. But you’ll find some quirky shops!

Tombstone

Location: Located in southeastern Arizona, near the town of Sierra Vista.

Tombstone was once a mining town infamous for gunfights and lawlessness.

Like other old mining towns, once the mine closed the population declined.

Now it’s a charming Wild West town with saloons, museums, and gunfight reenactments like the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Oatman

Location: Located in western Arizona, along historic Route 66.

Oatman was a gold mining town in the early 1900s.

It also has staged gunfights, and souvenir shops, and you can get a taste of the Old West along Route 66.

10. Scenic Drives

There’s nothing more relaxing and romantic to me than taking a scenic drive through mountains, canyons, forests, or lakes.

Arizona has no shortage of scenic drives to enjoy!

Sedona Red Rock Scenic Byway (State Route 179)

• Location: Sedona, Arizona
• What to Expect: Take State Route 179, also known as the Sedona Red Rock Scenic Byway for towering red rocks like Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock.

Apache Trail (State Route 88)

• Location: Phoenix to Roosevelt Lake
• What to Expect: The Apache Trail, also known as State Route 88 starts on the outskirts of Phoenix and winds through the Superstition Mountains, passing Canyon Lake and Apache Lake.

Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (US Route 191)

• Location: Clifton to Alpine
• What to Expect: Take the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, also known as US Route 191.
• It stretches over 120 miles through eastern Arizona’s Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive (State Route 89A)

• Location: Sedona to Flagstaff
• What to Expect: Take Oak Creek Canyon, also known as State Route 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff.
• Make sure you stop at Oak Creek Vista and other scenic vistas along the way.

11. Tour Historic Route 66

Location: The Route 66 Visitor Center is located in Kingman at 120 W Andy Devine Ave, Kingman, AZ 86401, right in the heart of the historic downtown area.

Also known as the “Mother Road,” The historic Route 66 traverses Arizona and stretches approximately 401 miles from the Arizona-California border.

We stopped at the visitor center on our way to the Grand Canyon. It’s so nostalgic and a unique opportunity to experience America’s most famous highway!

Cost: No admission fees, so it’s free!

12. Visit Meteor Crater

Location: Northern Arizona, near the town of Winslow.

The Meteor Crater is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact sites on Earth.

It is nearly a mile wide and over 550 feet deep.

Guided rim tours provide insight into the crater’s formation, its scientific significance, and the ongoing research conducted at the site.

Visitors can also enjoy interactive exhibits, a museum, and a gift shop featuring meteorite specimens and educational materials.

Cost: Typically around $18-$22 for adults, with discounts available for seniors, military personnel, and children.

13. Visit Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

Location: Southern Arizona, along the U.S.-Mexico border, about 150 miles west of Tucson.

The Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a stunning desert expanse of saguaro cacti, organ pipe cacti, and other desert flora.

The park is great for scenic drives, hiking trails, and exploring the rugged wilderness. It’s also great for stargazing because of it’s remote location away from urban light pollution.

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument also holds cultural significance as a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve and a designated Dark Sky Park.

Cost: Typically around $25 per vehicle for a seven-day pass.

Individual entry fees may apply for pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists.

Annual passes and America the Beautiful passes are also accepted.

14. Discover Tumacácori National Historical Park

Location: Southern Arizona, near the town of Tumacácori and about 45 miles south of Tucson.

The Tumacácori National Historical Park although not designated as one of the National Parks is a National Historical Park and offers a glimpse into the colonial past of the region.

There are three historic Spanish mission sites where you can explore ruins: Tumacácori, Guevavi, and Calabazas.

The centerpiece of the park is the Tumacácori Mission, founded by Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino in the late 17th century.

There are guided tours and self-guided walks through adobe walls, church ruins, and restored gardens.

Cost: Entrance ranges from $10-$15 per vehicle for a seven-day pass.

Individual entry fees may apply for pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists.

Annual passes and America the Beautiful passes are also accepted.

15. Visit the Titan Missile Museum

Location: Sahuarita, Arizona, about 25 miles south of Tucson.

We’ve always been fascinated by U.S. history and the Titan Missile Museum is a unique and interesting activity in Arizona for couples like us.

It sits atop the former Titan II missile silo, which was once part of the United States’ nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.

Guided tours are available taking you deep underground, where you can explore the launch control center and view the actual Titan II missile on display in its silo.

Cost: prices will range from $15-$20 for General Admission, but discounts are available for seniors, military, and children.

If you only want to visit the topside of the facility admission is $7.

That’s why I’m giving you 20 romantic things to do in Sedona!

From exhilarating hikes to leisurely wine tastings, there’s something magical and serene about exploring the rugged terrain and red rocks.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an outdoorsy couple or if you’re looking to relax and enjoy the scenery, this post has activities that are perfect for a romantic Sedona getaway.

1. Watch the Sunrise at Airport Mesa

We are not usually early risers, but watching a sunrise in a new place is totally worth waking up at 4am. To reach Airport Mesa you’ll want take the scenic Airport Mesa Loop Trail. The trailhead is off Airport Road, just a short drive from downtown Sedona.

It’s the perfect setting for a romantic activity in Sedona. We love to pack a picnic to enjoy while we bask in the beautiful scenery!

But the best part? Since you’re up so early, you can beat the crowds and then you have the rest of the day ahead of you!

The Airport Mesa Loop Trail

• Trail Length: Approximately 3.5 miles, typically taking around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the loop.
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Trailhead Location: The trailhead is off Airport Road in Sedona, Arizona. There is a trailhead parking lot.
• Elevation Gain: Expect a moderate elevation gain of around 200 feet along the trail.
• Trail Conditions: The trail consists of packed dirt and rocky terrain with uneven surfaces.

2. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

A hot air balloon ride is the quintessential romantic thing to do in Sedona for couples. It has always been my dream to travel up in a hot air balloon and Arizona has the most stunning landscapes to do it!

If you’re afraid of heights a hot air balloon ride may be a great option because it feels more like flying in an airplane. You can catch a hot air balloon ride in various locations, but you’ll want to book in advance because the tours do fill up quickly.

Hot air balloon rides will give you a bird’s-eye view of the iconic red rock formations and winding canyons. Its truly stunning!

3. Hike to Cathedral Rock

If your idea of a romantic adventure is taking a challenging hike then hiking to Cathedral Rock would be right up your alley!

I would not recommend this hike for beginners because of the rocky terrain and elevation gain, but the Cathedral Rock Trail is less than 2 miles so it may be doable. Cathedral Rock is located just south of the town center and is perfect for views of red rock formations.

We would consider ourselves more beginner hikers so if you’re not up for this one, there are plenty of easier hikes like Oak Creek Trail that give you amazing views of Cathedral Rock from a distance.

Cathedral Rock Trail

• Trail Length: Approximately 1.5 miles roundtrip, usually taking 1 to 1.5 hours to complete the out-and-back hike.
• Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous due to steep inclines and rock scrambling sections.
• Trailhead Location: The trailhead is off Back O’ Beyond Road. There is a designated parking area at the trailhead.
• Elevation Gain: Expect a significant elevation gain of approximately 600 feet along the trail.
• Trail Conditions: The trail consists of a combination of packed dirt, loose gravel, and rocky terrain, with some sections requiring rock scrambling and careful navigation.

4. Picnic at Red Rock State Park

Red Rock State Park was our first stop in Sedona after breakfast and is a beautiful and serene oasis with stunning views of red rock formations. The park is located at the base of Cathedral Rock along the banks of Oak Creek.

It was fairly easy to get to by car, we drove from Scottsdale so it was a nice scenic drive.

The visitor’s center is nicely equipped with a small theatre where you can learn about the history of the park and the popular things to do there. The park was founded in 1986 as a way to protect the unique and natural beauty of Sedona and it does exactly that!

We opted for simple hikes that were easy to get to from the visitor center like Eagles Nest Loop and Coyote Ridge Trail.

The magnificent views, towering cliffs, and tranquil waters of Oak Creek make the park a great spot for a picnic. The picnic tables are first come first serve unless reserved previously, so you only need to pack your favorites and go!

5. Explore Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village

If you need to take a break from the outdoors or simply looking for a fun place to shop and grab a bite then the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village is a great spot!

It’s charming and reminiscent of a traditional Mexican village. The village is adorned with cobblestone walkways, arched entryways, and courtyards. Its quintessentially romantic ambiance makes it the perfect backdrop for a date night in Sedona.

I would recommend getting a taste of Southwestern cuisine, sipping on a cocktail, or grabbing a cup of coffee while also perusing the galleries and boutiques. It’s the perfect way to end a day of hiking and exploring Sedona’s romantic sites!

6. Verde Valley Wine Trail

Even if you’re not a wine lover, experiencing Arizona’s wine country along the Verde Valley Wine Trail is a relaxing and romantic activity in Sedona.

The Verde Valley Wine Trail is a collection of wineries, tasting rooms, and vineyards scattered throughout, showcasing the rugged beauty of the region making it the perfect backdrop for a romantic day out in Sedona.

On our outing, we visited two vineyards along the trail:

• Page Springs Cellars – We had a lovely lunch at their bistro with a table outside on the terrace. We did have to wait around 45 minutes for a table, but we could order a glass or bottle to enjoy while we waited for our table. We met some other really nice couples too!
• D.A Ranch Estate Vineyards – One of the couples that we met recommended that we skip other wineries and head to D.A. Ranch. We were cautioned that we’d be driving down a dirt road, but it would all be worth it and they were right! There was no restaurant, but they had snacks for purchase and a food truck schedule.

Both vineyards offered live music!

7. Jeep Tour in the high desert

Now if you’re the adventuring couple then a Jeep Tour through the high desert is a great way to explore the terrain while off-roading.

Traveling in a Jeep allows you to venture beyond the beaten track, accessing remote areas and viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll find breathtaking vistas of iconic landmarks such as Cathedral Rock, Thunder Mountain, and Bear Mountain.

Jeep Tours are usually small groups of no more than 10 people so it is still an intimate experience. Just make sure that you dress appropriately and you are ready for an adventure!

8. Helicopter Tour of Sedona

If you weren’t keen on the hot air balloon idea then maybe going on a helicopter tour of Sedona is more your speed?

You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the majestic Cathedral Rock, soar over the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and swoop over Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. You may even spot the famous Snoopy Rock (yes it does look like Snoopy!) before crossing Oak Creek Canyon.

A helicopter tour is a great way to get a unique perspective of Sedona’s natural beauty. It’s perfect for couples looking to experience stunning scenery, historical insights, an exhilarating flight, and an unforgettable adventure!

9. Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is perched dramatically on the cliffs of Sedona’s red rocks and is an architectural marvel and definitely a sight to see!

The chapel is open everyday from 9-5pm with prayer and services on Monday, Wednedsay and Friday. There is a giftshop that is closed on Christmas and Easter. There is a parking lot, but its small.

When we travel, it’s all about the views and scenery for us and the Chapel of the Holy Cross is the perfect way to get panaromaic views of Sedona. It’s our idea of romance.

10. Go Horseback Riding

A horseback riding tour is a great way to experience the beauty of Sedona. We don’t usually ride horses, but on a trip, we love to explore a new place on horseback so it’s also good for inexperienced riders.

On a horseback riding tour, you’ll experience scenic vineyards and ride alongside the Verde River and Oak Creek. Keep an eye out for ancient Apache ruins along the way!

Riding on horseback with panoramic mountain views is one of the most romantic things in Sedona even if you’re a beginner. Just be prepared to be sore after the ride but it will subside quickly and is all worth it. It’s one of our favorite ways to discover the beauty of a new place together as a couple!

11. Take a Scenic Drive on Oak Creek Canyon

Another one of our favorite things to do while traveling? Take a scenic drive!

A scenic drive on Oak Creek Canyon, just north of Sedona is a fun and relaxing activity for couples.

Oak Creek Canyon is one of the most scenic drives in the Southwest. You’ll head north from Sedona on Highway 89A, on the drive you’ll find towering red rock formations and the clear waters of Oak Creek. I would recommend stopping at Oak Creek Vista beforehand to get a view of the canyon before you drive through.

Here are some stops you can make along the way:

• Oak Creek Vista – scenic overlook before entering the canyon. It’s a great photo op!
• Grasshopper Point – recreation area for swimming, fishing and picnicking.
• West Fork Trail – picturesque hiking trail that follow Oak Creek Canyon.
• Lunch at Indian Gardens – the oldest continuous general store in Sedona and perfect for grabbing lunch!
• Midgley Bridge – iconic bringde that spans the Oak Creek canyon and a perfect spot to take photos.

12. Visit Slide Rock State Park

Slide Rock State Park is nestled within Oak Creek Canyon and just 7 miles north of Sedona, Arizona. It’s another great stop while on your scenic drive through Oak Creek Canyon.

Take a break and visit the park’s namesake feature, Slide Rock where you can slide down the smooth sandstone creek bed into the refreshing waters below. It’s a one of a kind experience and so fun!

Bring some supplies for a picnic, go swimming, fish, and check out the apple orchards. There are plenty of places for a picnic like along the creek or by the orchard.

Popular hiking trails are Pendley Homestead Trail, Slide Rock Route, and Clifftop Nature Trail.

13. Montezuma Castle National Monument

The Montezuma Castle National Monument is about 45 miles south of Sedona, Arizona and is worth the trip just to see the ancient cliff dwellings high up in the limestone cliffs.

These dwellings were built by the Sinagua people over 600 years ago and are a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the indigenous peoples of the Southwest.

Of course, the main attraction of the monument is the imposing five-story cliff dwelling known as Montezuma Castle. The Castle is high above the Beaver Creek Valley with about 20 rooms. To get to the Castle there is a short paved trail.

Other must see attractions are the Montezuma Well, Cliff Dwelling Overlook and the Ancient Irrigation Ditch.

14. Kayak on the Verde River

The Verde River stretches approximately 170 miles, making it one of the last free-flowing rivers in the state. Kayaking on the Verde River is a very popular activity and a nice thing to do for the couple looking for an outdoor activity with a balance of adventure and epic scenery.

We’re not super experienced at kayaking, but its a great way to explore the beauty of the Verde River!

There are kayak rental services in nearby towns such as Cottonwood, Clarkdale, and Camp Verde. Many rental companies offer single and tandem kayaks, as well as guided tours and shuttle services for convenient access to different sections of the river.

15. Visit Out of Africa Wildlife Park

Out of Africa Wildlife Park is located in Camp Verde and is a must-do for any wildlife-loving couple!

The park will give you close encounters with exotic animals from around the world and spans over 100 acres of natural terrain.

There are guided safari tours through the park, where you’ll have an opportunity to observe and learn about animals such as lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras, and more. This is a place where you can spend the entire day.

Out of Africa Wildlife Park also has interactive experiences and animal encounters like feeding sessions, predator shows, and photo opportunities. It really is a cool experience.

16. Visit the Tuzigoot National Monument

Tuzigoot National Monument is another great stop if you’re heading to the Verde Valley. The monument offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient history and culture of the Sinagua people.

You’ll visit the Tuzigoot Pueblo, a well-preserved ancient village perched atop a limestone ridge overlooking the Verde River valley. You can explore the Pueblo ruins on a self-guided walking tour.

There are interpretive signs along the trail that give insight into the daily life, architecture, and cultural significance of the Tuzigoot people who called this place home over 1,000 years ago.

The monument’s visitor center has exhibits, artifacts, and presentations with information about the history and archaeology of the area. We think it’s important to understand the cultural significance of the places we visit.

17. Visit Jerome

We love a good mining town! I think it’s because we’re from Florida and don’t have anything like it.

Jerome is a historic mining town in central Arizona about 26 miles southwest of Sedona.

A visit to Jerome is like taking a journey back in time to the days of the Wild West. It was once known as the “Wickedest Town in the West” during the mining boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Head down to Jerome’s historic downtown district and visit the galleries, shops, restaurants, and cafes. You’ll also want to explore Jerome State Historic Park, home to the Douglas Mansion and Mining Museum, and get insight into the town’s rich mining history.

If you like Spooky, I would recommend going on one of the ghost tours that explore Jerome’s haunted history and supernatural legends.

18. Explore the Palatki Ruins

It important to us that we educate ourselves on the historic and cultural significance of the places that we visit.

The Palatki Ruins are located in the Coconino National Forest about 20 miles northwest of Sedona. These ruins offer a fascinating journey into the ancient past of the cultures that once inhabited the area dating back to over 1,000 years.

You can take a guided tour led by forest service volunteers and learn about the history, archaeology and cultural significance of the site.

On the tour you’ll also discover a variety of petroglyphs and pictographs, including depictions of humans, animals, and geometric designs, offering a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual practices of the ancient inhabitants.

19. Ride Verde Canyon Railroad

We love trains! The Verde Canyon Railroad is a scenic train ride through the Verde Canyon.

The train depot is located in Clarkdale and will put you on a 20 mile journey through some of Arizona’s most breathtaking scenery on the Verde River.

You’ll relax in vintge climate-controlled coaches or open-air viewing cars while listening to commentary about the history, geology, and ecology of the area and insights into the natural and cultural heritage of Verde Canyon.

The train passes through historic tunnels, bridges, and alongside the Verde River. You may even spot bald eagles, herons, and other wildlife along this scenic route.

20. Sedona Stargazing

Sedona, Arizona is one of the best stargazing spots because of its clear skies and minimal light pollution. What can be more romantic then gazing up at the stars on a clear night in the desert?

Popular stargazing spots in Sedona include the Sedona Airport Overlook, Red Rock State Park and Crescent Moon Ranch where there are designated viewing areas and ranger-led astronomy programs during certain times of the year.

You can expect to see stars, planets, constellations, and even the Milky Way on clear nights. If you’re lucky to have a telescope or binoculars, you may be able to observe distant galaxies, nebulae, and other deep-sky objects which is super exciting!

How many days do you need in Scottsdale?

3-5 days is perfect for a girls weekend in Scottsdale.

You can easily spend an entire week in Scottsdale, there’s so much to do and see in the city itself and the surrounding areas.

If you’re into hiking, you’ll want at least one full day, you’ll need a day to relax at the pool and spa and then you need a day to explore the city or take a drive up to Sedona.

So, 3 days is the minimum stay in my opinion. But it all depends on what you’re plans are!

Is Scottsdale worth going to?

Absolutely! A girls weekend in Scottsdale will bring you to a very beautiful and peaceful place, it is an amazing blend of nature and man-made luxury life.

The aura of this place will take you to another world and relax your mind.

There are lots of things to do in Scottsdale such as Grand Canyon day trips, Sedona day trips, Hiking, ATV rides etc.

In this blog post we dive into the best girls weekend ideas for a trip to Scottsdale. From hotels with spas to boutique shopping experiences to bars and restaurants, these are the best locations to spend your next trip with your girlfriends.

Where do you fly into for Scottsdale AZ?

First things, first, what’s the best way to get to a girls weekend in Scottsdale?

The most convenient airport to Scottsdale Arizona is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is approximately a one-hour drive from downtown Scottsdale.

Other nearby airports include Mesa Airport, about 45 minutes away, and Tucson International Airport, about 90 minutes away.

You can also fly into the Albuquerque International Sunport. It is about a four-hour drive from downtown Scottsdale.

Tips for Booking Your Flight to Scottsdale

If you plan on flying for a girls trip to Scottsdale, you’re likely looking for the most convenient and affordable flight.

You’ll want to check out this post on 5 big mistakes to avoid when booking flights, but first we’ll go over some tips:

• Be Flexible.
• Set up Price Alerts.
• When you find a deal, book it!
• Use Points and Miles.

Be Flexible!

I can’t stress this enough, when you’re booking travel the number one way to make it affordable is to be flexible. If you’re willing to travel off-season or whenever a deal pops up you’re setting yourself up for more opportunities to get to where you want to go without breaking the bank!

Set up Price Alerts!

Whether you’re flexible or not, it’s a good idea to set up price alerts.

My favorite sites for this are Google Flights, Skyscanner and Hopper, but there are tons out there! But remember that Southwest may not always show up on these sites, so you’re going to want to check directly on their site. Southwest does not usually release flights until 6 to 8 months in advance.

I usually wait until then to get serious about booking a flight.

When you find a deal, book it!

The best time to book a flight is when you find a good deal. I know it can be hard to coordinate with a group of friends, but don’t let that stop you from snagging a good price.

Most airlines let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours and nowadays you can cancel flights without penalty and get a credit.

So if the price goes down later (keep those alerts set!), you can rebook and get a credit for your next flight.

Southwest announced that they are no longer putting an expiration on flight credits so there’s nothing to lose!

Use Points and Miles

If you know me, you know that I can’t write a post without mentioning points and miles. This is by far my favorite way to save money on travel.

There are so many great ways to earn points and miles – credit cards, shopping portals, rewards partnerships.

What I love about it, is that you can earn on everyday purchases with little to no effort on your part.

How to Get Around Scottsdale AZ

Ok, so you’ve arrived for your girls weekend in Scottsdale, but how do you get around? If you are flying into Phoenix, it’s super easy to rent a car and drive to Scottsdale.

Depending on where you’re staying and what your plans are, renting a car may be the most convenient option.

How to find cheap deals on rental cars

I recommend that you use AutoSlash to find cheap deals on rental cars.

It’s a free tool that will give you quotes, coupons, and price tracking. The Points Guy has a great guide on how to use AutoSlash that you should check out.

What about public transportation?

The Scottsdale Area Transportation (SAAT) provides a variety of transportation options to get around the Scottsdale, AZ area.

The Public Transit is a great option for traveling within the Downtown Scottsdale, Old Town/Historic District and Downtown Phoenix areas, which are connected by regular transit service.

Free transportation options

The City of Scottsdale offers a free Trolley system it runs every 20 mins Monday thru Friday.

Other transportation options in Scottsdale, AZ

You can also take Uber or Lyft to get around the surrounding areas, but if you’re going to do that, make sure you have your rewards linked!

For Lyft Rewards, you can add your Hilton Honors Account or Delta Sky Miles account.

Navigate to the Rewards section from the Lyft app and add a travel partner, super easy! If you do not have a loyalty account with Hilton or Delta, what are you waiting for? Joining these loyalty programs are totally free.

You can also earn points with an eligible Chase credit card and earn credits with an eligible Mastercard.

To earn Marriott Bonvoy points with Uber navigate to the Settings tab within the Uber app.

Add your Marriott Bonvoy account under the Rewards section and you’re good!

If you do not have a Marriott Bonvoy account – Go join the totally free Marriott loyalty program right now!

We opted to rent a car because we wanted flexibility and did not have a big group. But for many of the activities mentioned in this post, you can take an Uber or Lyft to the pick up site if you have a tour scheduled.

Where to stay in Scottsdale AZ

Scottsdale is in the Sonoran desert, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

So when you’re looking for where to stay for a girls weekend in Scottsdale, a hotel in downtown isn’t going to cut it for this post.

How to use points to stay at Scottsdale Resorts for FREE

I love staying with hotel brands like Hilton Hotels and Marriott Properties because I am able to use loyalty points. And if you’re flexible you can find a really great redemption.

Plus since you’ve now linked programs with partners like Uber or Lyft you’re racking up the points without even thinking about it!

We stayed at The Boulders Resort & Spa for 60,000 points per night which was a steal!

I was able to earn enough points for a 7-night stay and I got the 5th night free just by using Hilton Honors points.

How did I do it?

With the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card (Rates and Fees), I earned a welcome bonus of 80,000 points, but I’ve seen the bonus rise to 130,000 points after $2,000 in purchases on the card in the first 3 months.

I used the card for my everyday purchases to meet the minimum spend requirement.

Hiltons are my preferred hotel chain, so I was able to rack up enough points pretty quickly. Plus during the pandemic, I spent a lot of money on groceries so that helped! I even earned a free night reward to use later.

Why we love The Boulders Resort and Spa

The Boulders Resort & Spa is a beautiful destination for a girls weekend in Scottsdale.

It’s definitely up there when looking for the best Arizona resort for girlfriends.

It’s only a 35 minute drive from the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. The scenery is quintessential Sonoran desert with views of beautiful cactus and boulders.

The Boulders Resort accommodations include Casitas, Villas, Haciendas.

The rooms are beautiful and Sonoran desert inspired which is exactly what we were looking for.

We enjoyed the onsite restaurants, the spa, pools and golf course. You can spend the entire weekend just staying on property if you wanted!

There’s no shortage of things to do for a girls weekend in Scottsdale! If you’re not interested in driving around yourself to these sites or if you’d rather have a guided tour, Viator has some amazing Scottsdale Tours that you should check out.

Shopping portals like Rakuten even let you connect to a rewards program like American Express so you can earn rewards points.

As I mentioned before, if you don’t have a car it’s fairly easy to get an Uber or Lyft that will take you to the pickup site for these destinations:

• Grand Canyon: Located only 1 hour from Scottsdale, The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s definitely worth a visit!
• Sedona: This beautiful city is located 2 hours from Scottsdale. There are lots of hiking and sightseeing opportunities there and wineries (more on this later)!
• Arizona trail: This 800-mile trail goes from Mexico to Utah and crosses the entire state of Arizona. It’s an excellent way to see the diverse landscapes in the state.
• Red Rocks State Park (Sedona): said to be “the most photographed place in Arizona” there’s hiking, kayaking, incredible views of the red rocks and the city of Sedona.

Scottsdale Girls Weekend Top Things to Do

When you’re planning a girls weekend in Scottsdale, birthday weekend in Scottsdale, Mother Daughter trip, or any getaway with the girls – you can’t go wrong with these activities.

• Maya Day Club: 20,000 square feet of outdoor restaurant, beer garden and back yard games!
• Hiking at the Camelback Mountain Resort: If you’re looking for a fun and active girls weekend, a day of hiking at the Camelback Mountain Resort is perfect. It’s got challenging or leisurely strolls with the back drop of incredible views of desert landscape.
• Hiking at the desert botanical gardens: The Desert Botanical Gardens are a must-see on any visit to Scottsdale. This 55-acre oasis is a botanical garden, wildlife park, and cultural preserve located in Papago Park, just north of downtown Scottsdale. The gardens are the world’s only desert Botanical Park that showcases plants native to the Sonoran Desert.
• Shopping at Scottsdale Fashion Square: The Scottsdale Fashion Square is an upscale indoor shopping mall that’s popular with tourists and locals.

Day trip to Sedona Wineries

We decided to do a day trip to Sedona at the last minute, but if you are looking to book any Sedona Wine Tours or other Sedona tours from the Phoenix or Scottsdale area, you will want to book in advance.

Most tours fill up months in advance, so make sure to book as soon as possible to secure the date that you want.​

What’s great about booking with Viator is that you can filter for free cancellation for up to 24 hours. So you can reserve a spot, but change plans later at no penalty.

Sedona tours are a great way to see the Red Rock Country and visit the beautiful red rocks.

You can choose from a variety of tours, including the ever-popular van tour, hiking tours, jeep tours, or a private tour just for you and your girlfriends.

We spent the morning at Red Rock State Park and then made our way to a couple of Sedona wineries:

• Page Springs Cellars: beautiful scenery, head to the tasting room or grab a table for a light lunch and sample wine while you take in the Arizona landscape.
• D.A. Ranch Estate Vineyards: When you’re driving up to DA Ranch, you’re not sure exactly where you’re going as you drive down a dirt road, but trust me you won’t regret it once you reach the ranch house.

Is it better to stay in Scottsdale or Sedona?

It depends on what your plans are. If you want to spend the weekend hiking, touring wineries, or being close to the Grand Canyon then it may be best to stay in Sedona.

But Scottsdale has more shopping, bars and restaurants nearby, so a day trip to Sedona is also a great way to spend the weekend. You can even split your stay between Scottsdale and Sedona.

Day trip to Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a littler over 3 hours from the Scottsdale/Phoenix area.

We booked a small group tour through Viator which included a helicopter tour.

The tour company made sure that we had the address to the nearest pick up site, but they also had a list of nearby resorts that they pick up from. They picked us up in a nice air conditioned van which was limited to around 13 passengers.

As we made our way up to the Grand Canyon, we made a few stops including the famous Route 66.

The weather was too cold and snowy for the helicopter ride, but we got lucky and still able to get some good visibility from the sites they took us to.

Hot Air Balloon tour

One of my dreams is to travel to a hot air balloon festival. I’ve always loved the photos of the sky filled with balloons and their different colors and designs.

So when we were in Arizona, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity for a Hot Air Balloon tour.

We booked a morning hot air balloon ride through Viator. It was October so we had to get up really early to meet the group at the pick up site in time.

You can find tours that include breakfast and a glass of champagne once you complete your flight. It’s definitely a morning well spent.

The best time to go on this experience is from the end of October to the beginning of March.

The reason for this is that it’s the time of year when there are the least amount of wind gusts.

Explore Old Town Scottsdale

Old Town Scottsdale is a one-of-a-kind urban district that features shopping, dining, entertainment and nightlife attractions.

The area is surrounded by beautiful mountains, abundant green spaces and unparalleled breweries and distilleries.

Things to do in Old Town Scottsdale:

• Take a hike in one of the many nearby trails. There are many options throughout the year, including Camelback Mountain, McDowell Mountain Regional Park or Papago Park.
• Visit one of the many microbreweries and distilleries in the area to enjoy some local flavors.
• Go for a walk in Scottsdale Civic Center Park: The park has lots of public art, so it’s fun to roam around and take pictures of all the cool installations.
• Shop at boutiques in the Old Town district: There are lots of cute boutiques in Old Town that sell all kinds of unique things you can’t find anywhere else.
• Eat delicious food at one (or all) of the many restaurants: There are tons of great restaurants in Old Town, so it’s hard to pick favorites!

Where to Eat in Scottsdale AZ

Scottsdale has some of the best restaurants in the Phoenix area. There are many fine dining restaurants offering a wide range of styles and prices, as well as great lunch spots.

Just be sure to make reservations, as most restaurants fill up fast.

You can also discover the best resorts and restaurants as well.

My picks are the Spotted Donkey or Tonto Bar and Grill.

Hash Kitchen: Great brunch spot!

They have several locations and there’s always a DJ! It’s a great spot, but they don’t take reservations so get there early or prepare for a wait. We went near closing time so the wait wasn’t bad.

Spotted Donkey: If you like tequila, this is the place for you! They have a great tequila list (yes, tequila, not wine) and an abundance of outdoor seating. The restaurant is part of the Boulders Resort, so they called us a golf cart to take us over.

Tonto Bar and Grill at Rancho Manana: What a hidden gem! We ended our long day of hiking and exploring with a nice dinner, basically across the street from the Boulders Resort.

Pomodoro: Amazing Italian food and a quintessential Arizona atmosphere.
