You can enjoy a relaxing, comfortable lounge experience without breaking the bank.

In this post, I’ll share my experience accessing the Chase Sapphire Lounge at LaGuardia Airport for free! You’ll learn about what it takes to get in and what you can expect once you’re inside.

Let’s dive in!

How to Access the Lounge for Free

Suppose you’re the primary cardholder or authorized user for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or J.P. Morgan Reserve card. In that case, you’ll get unlimited complimentary access to the Chase Sapphire Lounge for you and 2 guests.

If you want to bring in more than 2 guests, there will be a fee.

Alternatively, you’d also get unlimited guests if you could gain access via the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card (not available for new applicants).

The information for the Ritz-Carlton Credit Card and J.P. Morgan Reserve card has been collected independently by Traveling Franklins. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The lounge is managed by “The Club” so you’ll need to activate your free Priority Pass membership and use that to gain access to the lounge.

Just having your credit card won’t work.

Can you get free lounge access another way?

Yes! When we accessed the Chase Sapphire Lounge for the first time, we did not access it with a premium Chase credit card.

Thanks to the complimentary Priority Pass membership offered by our Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, we get one complimentary entry per calendar year.

The catch is that we cannot bring in complimentary guests and there were 3 of us.

Luckily, The Venture X also offers up to 4 free authorized users and each user can get their own separate Priority Pass membership.

So weeks before our trip, my husband (the primary cardholder) added my mom as an authorized user. We waited for her credit card to arrive and then signed her up for her own complimentary Priority Pass account.

She had her Priority Pass membership card via the mobile app ready for scanning once we arrived at the Chase Sapphire Lounge.

When my husband originally got the card, I was added as an authorized user so I had already set up my own separate Priority Pass account.

Each person must have their own separate Priority Pass account.

It’s not enough to just have the credit card with their name on it. They need to activate the Priority Pass account before arriving at the lounge.

Note: Priority Pass and LoungeKey members can access a Chase Sapphire Lounge once per calendar year, with the option to pay a fee for guests. While we used the Venture X for this visit, you can also use a Priority Pass or LoungeKey membership from other cards or a paid membership to access the Chase Sapphire lounge.

Location

The Chase Sapphire Lounge LGA is located at Terminal B in the central airside area.

It’s kinda tucked into a corner, so keep an eye out for what looks like it should be the entrance to the bathroom.

If you find yourself at the Eastern Concourse pedestrian bridge, you’ve gone too far.

Above the entranceway is a sign for the Chase Sapphire Lounge.

There may be an attendant standing in the doorway to ask you if you’re in the right place and if you have a valid same-day boarding pass.

When we came across the entrance to the hallway, there was no one there so we just followed the hallway to the elevators.

Once you get off the elevator, you walk to the right and down the hallway and you’ll be greeted by a frosted sliding glass door and you’re there!

What if my flight isn’t out of Terminal B?

If you’re not flying out of Terminal B, then there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to access the lounge without having to re-clear security.

Our flight was out of terminal B so we had no issues, but it’s just something to keep in mind when you’re making plans to visit the lounge.

Check-in Process

I had heard mixed reviews about the wait times at Chase Sapphire Lounges, but thankfully, our experience was smooth sailing.

A key part of my budget travel strategy is flying during off-peak times.

For this trip, we flew just after New Year’s, when most holiday crowds had already cleared out. This timing worked out well for us.

When we arrived at the lounge, there was no line at check-in, and although there were several other passengers, there were still plenty of seats available.

We had our digital Priority Passes ready to scan on our phones, along with our same-day boarding passes.

The check-in process was quick and easy since we each had our own individual Priority Pass account ready to go. The staff member even commented on how smoothly it went—definitely a perk of doing your research ahead of time!

Something to Remember: Like us, if you don’t have one of the Chase premium credit cards (like the Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Preferred), you won’t be able to bring in guests and will only have access once per calendar year with your Priority Pass membership.

This can be confusing if you’re used to bringing guests into other lounges with your Priority Pass. Be sure to check the details of your card benefits to avoid surprises.

That’s what we did since we had our Priority Pass through Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Food & Beverage Service

Not only does the Chase Sapphire Lounge offer a buffet with small bites, but they also provide a table service menu accessible via a QR code at your seat. Be sure to use the QR code at your specific table, as orders can be delivered to the wrong spot if not.

The menu featured hot items like a burger, salmon, and risotto, all delivered right to your table. Additionally, the full bar was available for delivery, and while I wasn’t in the mood for alcohol, I was thrilled to see non-alcoholic versions of many of the cocktails I wanted to try. They were delicious!

The staff was incredibly accommodating, even offering to bring drinks or food from the buffet if you hadn’t ordered through the app.

Lounge Features and Comfort

In addition to the beautiful décor and comfy seating, the lounge offers plenty of restrooms and a nursing room for added convenience.

I loved the second level, which features more seating and a beverage station, so you don’t have to go downstairs for a coffee.

The lounge also has a wellness area, including two relaxation spaces and two facial treatment rooms. You can make a reservation upon arrival by scanning the same QR code used to order food, with a selection of five different types of facials.

I didn’t realize this until later in our visit, and by then, all the available timeslots were booked up until after our flight.

I’ve heard that even if you can’t grab an appointment you should still visit the wellness area to grab a complimentary skincare travel kit!

Kid’s Options?

Yes, The family area features a children’s playroom and a photo booth that leads to a hidden speakeasy-style retro arcade.

Who It’s Best For

Leisure Travel and Families – We were traveling for leisure, and the lounge was perfect for our needs.

I loved the variety of seating options — there were dining tables, stand-alone chairs with small tables, couches, and seating at the bar.

The kids’ lounge and arcade were great for families with younger children and teenagers, adding a fun touch.

The lounge was ideal for working, too, with no time limit at the tables. However, if you’re looking for a quiet space to take a conference call, this lounge might not be the best option.

It’s more focused on relaxation and socializing. If you do need a private space, you can rent one of the Reserve Suites, though It would come at a pretty penny.

Final Thoughts

The Chase Sapphire Lounge at LGA Airport exceeded my expectations and stands out as one of the most comfortable and well-appointed lounges I’ve visited—right up there with Capital One’s Flagship Lounge at DFW.

The seating options were plentiful and cozy, and the amenities were top-notch. The food and beverages were delicious, especially considering they’re all included with access.

Plus, if you’re traveling with kids, the play area and arcade are a great touch!

From everything I’ve heard about the other Chase Sapphire Lounges, they live up to the same high standards.

Adding my mom and me as authorized users on the Venture X was absolutely worth it.

If I knew for sure that we’d be able to experience Chase Sapphire Lounges around the world, I’d seriously consider upgrading to the Chase Sapphire Reserve for even more lounge access throughout the year.

In this post, I’m sharing my experience at the Hyatt Centric Madrid, a hotel that perfectly blends comfort, convenience, and a bit of luxury.

From the vibrant location to the top-notch amenities, I’ll walk you through what you can expect during your stay—from check-in to checkout.

The best part? It’s super easy to book this hotel with points and pay very little out of pocket!

Whether you’re visiting Madrid for the first time or just looking for a new hotel option, this review will give you all the details you need!

Why I Chose This Hotel

After 10 days of exploring Spain, I knew our last 2 nights in Madrid needed to be both relaxing and conveniently located near the city’s main attractions.

We’d kept our other hotel stays within budget throughout the trip, so I felt it was the perfect time to treat ourselves a bit with the Hyatt Centric Madrid.

Thanks to points and miles, we kept the costs down—and spoiler alert, it did not disappoint!

Booking Process

Hyatt Hotels is a favorite among points enthusiasts because of its fixed category award chart. To keep things simple, you can book a Hyatt hotel for a lot fewer points than hotel chains like Hilton or Hyatt.

But if you don’t have enough points then you can also book with cash and points which can be nice if you want to give yourself a little discount without using all of your points.

Yeah, it may not be the “best” redemption, but in our world, if you’re saving money then you’re always winning.

I usually love to transfer my points from my favorite bank – Chase, but at the time I was saving my points for another trip.

I already had a small stash of Hyatt points in my account so I decided to use what I had and pay cash for the rest.

Hotel Location

Hyatt Centric Madrid is located in Central Madrid on Gran Via.

Gran Via is a bustling street lined with high-end stores and restaurants. It’s a great location for some of the most iconic landmarks in Madrid.

Check-in Process

The Check-in process was super smooth!

The minute our cab pulled up to the hotel, the staff was on us offering assistance in any way they could.

Our cab driver was super grumpy, he didn’t help us with our luggage and didn’t bother to get out of the cab when he dropped us off, but the hotel staff were super helpful.

There was also a beverage station and snacks in the lobby.

Room Quality

We booked a standard room with 2 twin beds. The room was a good size for us, about 350 square feet.

I had previously asked for an upgrade, we didn’t have elite status, but many times if there is an upgrade available just being a loyalty member and asking for an upgrade works.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t an upgrade available. We were staying Thursday and Friday night.

The room was beautiful and extremely clean.

The bathroom was quite large and bright with marble tile. I love a nice hotel bathroom and this one did not disappoint.

It had everything you’d need, but if you forgot something there was a list of amenities that you could request. Most you could take with you, but some you’d need to return.

We called to order a few items and they were delivered to our room promptly!

Facilities & Services

This hotel had plenty of amenities to keep us comfortable.

• Rooftop Bar and Restaurant
• Room Service
• Free Internet
• Laundry Services
• In-Room Chromecast: my new favorite feature in hotels!
• Friendly Concierge
• Complimentary Water Bottle

Final Thoughts

Overall, we loved our stay at the Hyatt Centric Madrid so much we didn’t want to leave!

The accommodations for very comfortable and roomy. The bathroom was stunning and the rooftop bar was so nice for a refreshing beverage and late afternoon snack before venturing out on Gran Via for late-night dinner.

You can’t beat the location and the fact that you can book this hotel for $0 on Hyatt points makes this a no-brainer for sure!

If you’ve ever shopped abroad in the European Union, you’ve likely encountered VAT without realizing what it is or how it affects your purchases.

In this post, we will break down what VAT really means, how it works, and the different rates you might come across.

Plus, we’ve got a special tip for non-EU residents on how you can claim a VAT refund, potentially saving you a significant amount of money.

Whether you’re a seasoned shopper or a curious tourist, this guide will arm you with the knowledge to navigate VAT like a pro and make the most of your trip abroad!

What is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax, and it’s pretty much everywhere when you shop in countries like Spain and those in the European Union.

VAT rates can vary wildly depending on where you are and what you’re buying. It’s applied broadly across most goods and services.

Necessities might have lower rates or none at all (like some foods or books), while other items are taxed at the standard rate, which could be as high as 27% in some EU countries.

You’ll typically see VAT applied to things like:

• Retail Goods: Clothing, electronics, etc.
• Services: Hotel accommodations, restaurant meals, and transport services.
• Luxury Items: Jewelry, artwork, and high-end electronics.
• Daily Essentials: In some regions, even groceries, pharmaceuticals, and other necessities may have VAT.

Each country decides its own VAT rates and categories.

So, you can see why it’s important to understand the process for requesting a refund.

Who is eligible for a VAT refund?

Non-EU citizens are eligible for a VAT refund on purchases made within the EU, under certain conditions.

Here are the main eligibility criteria:

Residency: You must be a resident outside the EU. This generally needs to be verified with your passport or other identification.

Minimum Purchase Amount: Most EU countries require that you spend a minimum amount in a single store on the same day to qualify for a VAT refund. This amount varies by country. In Spain, for instance, there is no minimal spending amount.

Export of Goods: You must export (take them) the purchased goods out of the EU within a specific time frame, usually within three months of purchase.

Customs Validation: Before leaving the EU, you must have your Tax-Free Forms stamped or validated by customs to prove that the goods are leaving the EU.

This may mean you’ll need to show the goods, your receipts, and your completed Tax-Free Forms at the customs desk at the airport or border crossing. Nowadays everything is digital.

If you’re buying things like clothes or accessories, you likely won’t need to show these at customs, but I would keep them on you just in case.

Expensive items or electronics like laptops or cell phones will likely need to be physically verified by customs.

Purchases Eligible for VAT Refunds

For tourists, not all VAT-paid goods are eligible for refunds upon leaving the country.

Goods Only: Services, like hotel stays and meals, are generally not eligible for VAT refunds.

Unused and Exported Goods: The purchased goods must be unused and taken out of the country, usually within three months of purchase.

Basically, if you’re buying purses, clothes, watches, jewelry, or something like that then you’re likely eligible for a refund.

Shopping and Getting the VAT Tax-Free Form

When you’re shopping around Spain, make sure that you ask in-store (preferably before purchase) whether they participate in the VAT Refund program. Not all retailers participate in the program.

If they do, great! If not, at least you asked.

If they do participate, they will ask for your passport and personal information.

Several companies specialize in processing VAT Refunds. The store that we went to used Global Blue.

Global Blue made the process extremely simple. I downloaded the app and everything needed to process the VAT Refund was available just as the store entered it.

I chose to have the refund done via credit card and did not need to pay a processing fee. In some cases, if you want the refund in cash, they will take out a percentage.

We were given our paperwork and receipt which we kept, but if for some reason we did lose it I was confident that the information on the app would be all that we needed to complete the process.

Arriving at the Madrid Airport – MAD

Since we were leaving the European Union from Spain and heading back to the States, we completed customs validation at the Madrid Airport.

If you are hopping to another country within the EU, you don’t need to complete the process when departing from Spain.

You should wait until you are leaving the EU to validate all of your items purchased in countries with the European Union.

After checking in our bags (we kept our items with us), we had no problems finding a DIVA kiosk for self-validation.

The process was simple, we scanned the bar code on the receipt and were given the green check mark.

The green check mark meant that customs had validated our items and our refund would be processed. I saw the refund on my credit within 5 business days, super quick!

If we had been given a red X then we would have needed to take our items to the customs office for validation.

Do you need to keep your items with you for validation? If you’ve purchased clothes, shoes, or inexpensive items then you will likely not need to show your items for validation.

However, if you’ve purchased expensive items or electronics like laptops or cell phones it’s more likely that you will be directed to the customs office for validation.

Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them

Claiming VAT back in Spain can be a smooth process if you’re aware of the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Not Checking Eligibility: Don’t be like me! We spent $300 at a store and completely forgot to ask if they do VAT Refunds (facepalm).

So, I recommend that the first thing you do when you step into a store is ask whether they participate in the program. Not all retailers will have a “Tax-Free shopping” sign.

The good news is that even if you forget, as long as you have the receipt, you can go back to the store and complete the process if the store participates.

You cannot complete the process online or anything like that. You must start the process in person at the store.

Not Bringing Your Passport: You must have your actual passport or another form of eligible identification for the store to process your tax-free form. A photo may not cut it. I always keep my passport with me in an antitheft purse.

Failing to Meet Minimum Spend Requirements: Each country has a minimum purchase amount to qualify for a VAT refund. The store can tell you, but you can also see the minimums for the country you’re visiting by going to the VAT website or one of the processing services like the Global Blue website.

Improper Documentation: Incomplete forms or missing receipts can lead to a denied VAT refund. Now that everything is digital it’s much harder for this one to happen. To be safe, make sure you keep all documentation given to you by the store.

Packing Purchased Goods Incorrectly: You won’t always need to have the items with you for customs validation, but you should keep them in your carry-on just in case.

Missing Customs Validation: Please do not forget to scan the barcode at a DIVA kiosk. If you don’t get that green check mark or a stamp from customs then you will not receive your refund.

Allow extra time in case you need to visit the customs office for inspection before validation.

Ignoring Service Fees: If you don’t need the cash, opt to get the refund via a credit card electronically. This option usually comes without unnecessary processing fees. Get that money!

1. Pay with a credit card that has travel protection

Using a credit card with travel protection for booking any travel, especially international trips, provides peace of mind. These credit cards offer features like trip cancellation insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and emergency medical assistance.

The credit card I use with travel protection is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or you can get the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, both known for travel protection benefits.

Some other credit cards with travel protections include the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express, but other credit cards offer great travel benefits.

Make sure you review the travel benefits carefully to make sure they align with your needs.

2. Consider Travel Insurance

Credit card travel protections are definitely great to have, but depending on your situation even if you do have that protection you may want to consider supplemental travel insurance.

If you don’t have travel protections through a credit card then travel insurance offers financial protection and assistance in case of medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, or other unforeseen circumstances.

VisitorsCoverage: Visitors Coverage is a travel insurance provider offering peace of mind whether you are seeking international travel insurance, visitors insurance, visa insurance, trip cancellation, cruise insurance, and more.

You can compare insurance plans and they make the claims process simple.

InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip is a travel insurance aggregator that compares travel insurance plans from multiple providers in one place.

It’s user-friendly and makes the process of finding the right travel insurance coverage for your specific needs simpler.

You can quickly compare prices, coverage options, and benefits from various insurance companies.

SafetyWing Insurance: SafetyWing is a popular travel insurance provider known for its comprehensive coverage and affordable pricing.

They offer insurance plans designed specifically for digital nomads, long-term travelers, and remote workers.

SafetyWing’s policies typically provide coverage for medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, travel delays, personal liability, and other essential benefits.

Their insurance plans can be purchased on a monthly subscription basis, allowing flexibility in coverage duration to match your travel needs.

When considering travel insurance, please carefully review the policy terms, coverage limits, and exclusions. Different insurance providers may offer varying levels of coverage, so make sure to select a plan that aligns with your specific travel requirements.

3. Exchange Currency when you arrive

Exchanging currency at home before your trip could lead to higher fees.

You can usually get cash out of the ATMs at the airport upon arrival, but you’ll want to do some research on this in advance so there aren’t any surprises.

Here are some reasons why you should wait:

Unfavorable Exchange Rates: Currency exchange rates can fluctuate significantly over time.

You may not want to exchange currency too far in advance for this reason.

Hidden Fees and Commissions: Exchanging currency at home or in your home country can involve hidden fees and commissions.

Currency exchange providers may charge inflated rates or add additional fees, reducing the value of your exchanged currency.

Accessibility to ATMs and Local Banks: Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll probably have easy access to ATMs and local banks where you can withdraw cash in the local currency.

Things to Keep in Mind when using a local bank ATM

• Use a debit card that does not charge ATM fees worldwide.
• It’s ok to accept the surcharge for withdrawing cash. If you get a rebate from your bank, great, but if not it’s still cheaper than the airport exchange services.
• Decline their offer to convert the currency for you (trust me it’s ok). Your bank will do it without surcharges.
• Always use a bank ATM instead of the currency exchange machines.

Read the selections carefully and don’t let the wording confuse you. You got this!

4. Get an ATM card that doesn’t charge fees

When you’re traveling abroad, having an ATM card that won’t charge you fees worldwide can save you from incurring unnecessary charges during your trip.

For example, Charles Schwab is an online bank that not only doesn’t have any minimums or monthly fees, but they also don’t charge any ATM fees worldwide.

They will refund 100% of any withdrawal fees worldwide.

I’m with Chase Private Client which also provides ATM fee reimbursement worldwide, but if I didn’t already have that benefit I like knowing that Charles Schwab is another great option.

There are also other online banks out there with similar benefits as well.

5. Always pay in local currency

If you’re traveling abroad and you have the option to pay in the local currency or US dollars, you always pay in the local currency.

Why? Well, I’ll tell you.

Paying in the local currency helps you avoid dynamic currency conversion fees imposed by merchants or ATMs, which can be costly.

It’s another way for them to get you on hidden fees by making it seem like it’s the more convenient option for you.

It’s not, it’s the more expensive option.

6. Bring a money belt or travel wallet

You probably think that bringing a money belt is a touristy thing, but it’s how to keep your money secure while traveling abroad.

There are so many pickpockets and the last thing you want to do is make yourself an easy target.

Money belts are convenient and discreet. I always have one with me with my passport, cash, and credit cards. So if my purse does get stolen or lost, I still have what’s important.

But if a money belt isn’t really your style (totally get it), there are a lot of cute anti-theft purses on Amazon!

I also stash a little extra cash and a credit card in my hotel room that way not everything is in one place.

7. Get a local eSIM card

When traveling abroad it can be expensive to stay connected. Some cell phone carriers may offer you international plans, but those can get pricey.

One thing you should consider is getting a local eSIM card.

Easy Activation and Flexibility: With a local eSIM card, you can conveniently activate a local data plan on your smartphone without the need for physical SIM cards.

Cost Savings: Using a local eSIM card can often be more cost-effective than relying solely on international roaming services provided by your home carrier.

No Need to Change Your Phone Number: The best part is that you don’t need to change your phone number.

Airalo is a trusted provider of local eSIM cards, offering coverage in numerous countries worldwide.

They have a user-friendly app and website where you can easily browse available plans, activate your eSIM, and manage your data usage.

This may not work for everyone. Before purchasing a local eSIM card please check the compatibility of your device with eSIM technology and ensure that it is unlocked to accept eSIM cards.

I made the mistake of purchasing an eSIM for my brand-new cell phone.

Although it was eSIM compatible, I was unable to unlock the phone until after 60 days after purchasing it.

Don’t make that same mistake!

8. Protect your phone

Besides getting your wallet stolen or lost while traveling, the next worst thing that could happen is a stolen or lost phone.

Your phone is your everything it’s your camera, navigation device, communication hub and so much more.

So to keep it safe, you should consider purchasing a Lanyard Adjustable Neck Strap and Cell Phone Lanyard Wrist Strap.

The last thing you need is for your phone to get swiped while you’re trying to take a picture or you get bumped into on a train and your phone gets lost.

9. Use Points to pay for airfare and hotels

If you’re not already using points and miles to help you pay for travel, you’re missing out!

By leveraging points earned on everyday purchases and understanding loyalty rewards programs you can save a lot of money especially when traveling abroad.

10. Check your Passport Expiration

Checking the expiration date of your passport before an international trip is the most important thing you can do. Some countries require at least six months of validity beyond your intended departure date.

Renewing a passport takes time, so check it well in advance!

You’ll also want to make sure you have sufficient blank visa pages too.

Should you carry your passport with you while traveling or leave it in the hotel? I see this question get asked a lot. Personally, I always keep my passport with me.

You could take a picture of it in case you are asked to show it, but some attractions and local authorities require you to have the original with you.

Research your destination thoroughly and if you do keep it with you, make sure its safe in an anti-theft money belt (under your clothes) or purse.

11. Get Global Entry

Global Entry is a trusted traveler program that expedites entry into the United States for pre-approved travelers. It offers benefits such as streamlined customs processing and includes TSA PreCheck.

The Global entry application costs $120 and is good for 5 years.

Certain credit cards offer reimbursement for the Global Entry application fee.

• Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
• Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
• Chase Sapphire Reserve®
• Platinum Card® from American Express.

If you don’t have Global entry, check out the free Mobile Passport Control app.

It allows digital customs declaration and expedited entry via designated lanes at participating U.S. airports.

Investing in Global Entry saves time and offers a smoother customs experience.

The fact that it also includes TSA PreCheck for domestic airport security makes it even more worth every penny.

12. Research Public Transportation

Before you embark on your international trip, consider researching the local public transportation options.

It’s cost-effective, reliable, and provides an authentic cultural experience.

Public transportation helps you avoid traffic and parking hassles, reduces your environmental impact, and saves money.

Make sure you gather information on routes, schedules, payment methods, and safety guidelines.

When I’m planning out my transportation for a trip, I like using Rome2Rio.

It gives me all of the transportation options available in one place.

13. Download offline maps

The cell phone reception may not be as good at your destination and you’ll want a backup plan in case your navigation isn’t working.

Offline maps eliminate the need for an internet connection and provide reliable navigation in areas with limited coverage.

Downloading Google Maps offline can also save battery life, and allow you to plan, and mark points of interest. With offline maps, you can confidently explore new destinations without relying on data or Wi-Fi connections.

14. Learn how to tip

When traveling abroad from the US, it can be a little confusing to know how you should tip.

Do some research on the tipping etiquette of your destination country before you travel.

Also, while you’re traveling be aware of any service charges that may already be included in your bill at restaurants or hotels and therefore additional tipping is not required.

15. Register with the U.S. Embassy

Registering with the US Embassy when traveling abroad can be a wise decision.

By registering, you can receive important safety updates and travel advisories specific to your destination, helping you stay informed and prepared for any potential risks or emergencies.

In the event of a natural disaster, civil unrest, or other emergencies, the embassy can reach out to registered US citizens and provide assistance, evacuation plans, or consular services.

Registering also enables the embassy to locate and contact you or your designated emergency contacts more easily in case of an unforeseen situation.

It’s a simple and proactive step that can enhance your safety and peace of mind while traveling overseas.

It’s important to note that registering with the U.S. Embassy does not guarantee specific protections or privileges but serves as a means of communication and access to support in case of need.

Please also review the U.S. Department of State’s guidelines and recommendations for travelers to your destination country.

16. Learn Basic Local Etiquette

This may seem basic, but you’d be surprised how important it can be to understand and respect the customs and cultures of the countries you visit.

Knowing and practicing local customs, such as greetings, table manners, dress codes, and communication styles can help you avoid unintentional offenses and foster a sense of mutual respect and appreciation.

17. Be Prepared for Jet Lag

Jet lag can cause fatigue, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and a general sense of disorientation. If you want to start enjoying your trip as soon as possible you’ll want to do whatever you can to get ahead of jet lag.

Try these:

• Download apps that can help like Timeshifter.
• Try adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before you leave by gradually aligning with your destination’s time zone.
• Stay hydrated! I know it can be challenging while traveling or on vacation but don’t overdo the alcohol or caffeine.
• When you arrive at your destination try to get in some natural sunlight as soon as possible (if not arriving in the evening).
• Adjust your meal times to the local schedule as soon as possible.

18. Pack a Portable Power Bank

Packing a portable charger when traveling abroad from the US is one of the best things you can do.

You’re phone and devices do a lot for you and the last thing you need is for them to die without any hope of recharging.

You may also not realize how much of your battery you use when you’re traveling.

And what’s great about a portable charger is that you don’t have to worry about finding an available outlet.

19. Bring a universal outlet adapter

Even if you have a portable charger with you, you still need to charge it eventually.

So bringing a universal outlet adapter when traveling abroad is very important.

Different countries have varying types of power outlets and voltage standards, which may differ from those in the US.

A universal outlet adapter allows you to plug your devices into foreign outlets, regardless of the socket configuration. They are compact and lightweight so they won’t take up too much room in your luggage.

20. Bring Credit Cards that don’t charge foreign transaction fees

Don’t make the mistake of bringing credit cards that charge you unnecessary fees.

There are plenty of great credit cards out there. Some of these credit cards not only don’t have annual fees but also don’t charge foreign transaction fees.

Here are my recommendations:

• Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card
• Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
• Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
• Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

21. Bring more than one Credit Card

When I travel internationally, I always bring a handful of credit cards that don’t charge foreign transaction fees. But I don’t keep all of these credit cards on me.

If for some reason I lose a credit card or it gets stolen, I stash my credit cards in different places.

I keep a credit card hidden in my suitcase in my hotel, in the safe, and in my money belt. I never keep my passport, wallet, or anything valuable in my purse.

This way if my purse gets stolen, I’m not losing anything of value.

22. Do I need a visa to travel internationally from the US?

Yes, in some cases, you will need a visa to travel internationally from the US. The requirement for a visa depends on the country you plan to visit and the purpose of your trip.

Some countries have visa exemption agreements with the US, allowing US citizens to enter without a visa for a certain period.

However, many countries do require US citizens to obtain a visa before arrival.

You’ll want to research the specific entry requirements of your destination country by visiting the embassy or consulate website.

23. Don’t wait until the last minute to book flights

For the best cash fares and availability, you want to start looking at international flights 10-12 months in advance.

You want to book international flights starting at 8 months out, but no later than 3 months out (unless you find a last-minute deal).

The key to booking any flight is to be flexible, but once you find the price you’re willing to pay, book it.

24. Get your VAT Refund

VAT is a tax you’ll encounter everywhere in the European Union. I’m talking about hotels, food, clothes, jewelry, pretty much anything.

If you’re a non-EU citizen then you’re eligible for a refund on some of the goods you buy when shopping within the European Union.

You could save anywhere between 15%-27%. I’ve got detailed instructions on how to claim back VAT when traveling within Spain and other countries within the European Union.

There are so many things to consider before going on a cruise, but packing your bags shouldn’t be one of them. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to what to bring on a cruise. Everyone is different and they have their own preferences. Some people like bringing a lot of clothes while others only bring the essentials.

But let’s forget about the essentials, what you really need are the cool things to bring on a cruise. These are some unique and awesome items that you’ll be glad you brought on your cruise!

What to pack for your cruise

If you’re a first time cruiser you’re probably wondering – What can I bring onto a cruise? But packing for a cruise, isn’t really that much different from any other vacation.

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise ship

What’s nice about a cruise is that you usually won’t need to worry about a restriction on the amount of luggage you can bring. However, remember that your cabin may not have a lot of storage space, so make sure the amount of luggage you’re taking is reasonable.

Always, check the guidelines for your specific cruise line. While it’s unusual to have luggage restrictions, you don’t want to be surprised.

Now, if you have to fly to your departure port that’s a different story. The airline will most certainly have luggage restrictions. So if you want some advice on how to maximize space in your luggage, check out my post on how to pack a carry on.

Why not ship your luggage?

If you are flying to your departure port, I would advise that you get there at least a day earlier in case of delays. If you do, you may want to consider shipping your luggage with a company like Lugless. Shipping your luggage may seem a little extreme, but it’s actually pretty genius. It will take some stress off the packing process.

Whatever size and amount of luggage you plan to bring, you’ll need these packing tricks and cool things to bring on a cruise:

Hat Clip

Have you seen those travelers that always wear the most stylish hats and just think – How the hell did they pack that? Well, the answer is these hat clips, they will save you the headache of trying to figure out how to stuff your hat in your bag without it getting crushed.

Luggage Shoe Caddy

I can smoosh my shoes in a suitcase just like the best of them, but what if you didn’t have to? This shoe bag holds 3 pairs of shoes and slides right onto your suitcase handles. It’s even water resistant!

Do you need to bring extra hangers?

I mean, if you’re going to be bringing more than a few outfits (it me) you’re going to need extra hangers. The cruise cabins are only going to have so many hangers. I’m the type of traveler that immediately unpacks and hangs up my clothes.

Travel Hangers

I love these foldable travel hangers because they fit well in my suitcase and make it easy for me to hang up my clothes right away.

More cool things to bring on a cruise

Portable Speaker

Yes, there will certainly be music on the cruise, but I like listening to music as I get ready in the room. You may also use a portable speaker if you want to listen to music while at the beach or relaxing on the ship. I can’t wear ear buds for a long time because they hurt my ears, so I prefer to have a speaker around. This JBL dustproof, portable speaker is good for the beach because it’s light and easy to carry.

Cooling Towel

Probably one of the most cool things to bring on a cruise are a pack of cooling towels. My husband was skeptical about this when I suggested that we take these on our cruise, but he soon became a convert!

I knew that we would get hot laying out at the beach or walking on the runway on the ship. The pools get crowded so going in for a dip was not always a great option. Just get these cooling towels wet and they keep you cool all day long. Fold up the towel, put it in the reusable bag and clip it to yourself or another bag and you’re good to go!

Sand resistant beach blanket

Yes, they give you towels on your cruise, but I also like to bring this quick dry, sand resistant, light weight, extra large beach towel as well. It’s very light so it doesn’t take up much room in my bag, plus it’s sand resistant.

Towel Clips

Isn’t it super annoying when you’re trying to layout and your towel keeps falling off? That’s what these towel clips are for!

Dry Bag and Waterproof phone case

This will come in handy for when you’re by the pool or the beach. It’s perfect for keeping my change of clothes clean and dry. I also love that this dry bag comes with a phone case as well. Take those underwater Instagram pics and keep your phone sand free!

Can you bring your own drink on a cruise ship?

Yes and no. The cruise lines make a good amount of money on drink packages. So, there are restrictions on what you can and cannot bring on the ship. Make sure you check with the specific cruise line for their guidelines.

Is it allowed to bring alcohol on a cruise in checked luggage?

In most cases, you won’t be allowed to bring liquor products or beer onto the cruise especially in your checked luggage. But most cruise lines allow you to bring two 750 ml bottles of wine in your carry on luggage. Some cruise lines will even let you bring beer if it’s in your carry on.

You can buy alcohol while your visiting ports, but they’ll likely take it from you when you re board the ship. They will hold it for you until the end of the cruise. I personally don’t really like to buy alcohol in the ports because in most cases you’re not really saving that much money. But if it’s something rare or hard to get back home, it can be a good idea.

Packing wine for your cruise

Inflatable Wine bottle protector bags

most cruise lines will allow you to bring two 750ml bottles of wine per cabin in your carry on luggage. These inflatable wine bags will come in handy. I was able to fit two bottles of wine in these bags in my carry on back pack.

Wine Savers

I also like to bring wine saver pumps to keep the wine fresh longer.

Can you bring bottles of water on a cruise

Most cruise lines will let you bring a bottle of water or soft drinks on the ship in a carry on luggage, but you won’t be able to bring large quantities of it with you.

If you have a special circumstance, just contact the cruise line or your travel advisor and they should be able to make special accommodations for you. Always check the guidelines for your specific cruise line. Some are more lenient than others.

Collapsible Water Bottle

Most people need between six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. So you don’t want to forget to drink water on your cruise.

Instead of trying to bring your own bottled water on the ship, get a re fillable and collapsible water bottle. These are light weight, convenient and easy to clip onto your bag. These are also great for when you go on excursions and don’t want to worry about having fresh water to drink.

If you like to keep your water cold, get one of these insulated refillable water bottles.

Popular Useful Things to Pack You Wouldn’t Think Of

Solar Power Bank

Now, this is one of the really cool things to bring on a cruise. You’re going to be using your phone a lot on a cruise. Whether it’s for pictures, video, or booking cruise activities so you won’t want your phone to die on you. I love this solar power bank, it’s got several cool gadgets in one. It also has a clip so you can attach it to yourself or your bag.

Water Shoes

If you don’t own a pair of water shoes, then you will thank me for this! The pool deck is blazing hot, the beach is sandy and the floor has who knows what. These water shoes are perfect, comfortable and stylish.

Portable Safe

When you’re on a cruise, you’re likely going somewhere tropical where you’ll be lying on a beach somewhere. When you get off the ship, you will need your identification documents and your wallet. I get paranoid about getting up to get a drink at the bar or going into the water and leaving our stuff. This portable safe gives me peace of mind. Just clip it to an umbrella or to your lounge chair.

Neck Fan

It gets really hot when you’re on the ship deck, at the beach or when you’re on an excursion. We went on quite a long excursion in the Dominican Republic that entailed a lot of walking in the tropical forests, our mosquito repellant bracelets and these neck fans were life savers.

Cruise packing checklist: What else should you bring?

Cigars

You’re on vacation, this is a celebration! Cruise ships will have a designated smoking area. In some cases, you may be able to smoke on your balcony.

Hangover Remedy

It’s more than likely that you will be enjoying some adult beverages and as you get older, those hangovers can put a damper on your vacation time. These hangover tablets help you with that. They’re similar to taking alka seltzer in they dissolve in water. I would also recommend adding Liquid IV to your water throughout your vacation to keep you energized and hydrated. There’s nothing worse than feeling crummy during your vacation.

Travel Binoculars

These mini binoculars are small and compact. You never know when you’ll see something like dolphins in the water. These will give you a close up look and not take up much room in your bag.

Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitos like heat and humidity which describe common destinations for cruise ships. But who wants to take mosquito repellent spray with them on a cruise. Not I! That’s why I love these mosquito repellent bracelets. They are light, waterproof and come individually wrapped in resealable bags. I was able to get my husband to wear it by telling him he could wear it on his ankle. You can barely feel them.

Cruise Cabin must haves

Magnetic hooks

Since cabin walls are metal, bringing magnetic hooks will provide you with much needed extra storage.

Poo-Pourri

those cruise cabin bathroom can be teeny tiny. So when you’re going number two, do yourself a favor and bring some Poo-Pourri with you. The travel size versions are great for a cruise.

Spa Mask

The spas onboard cruise ships can be expensive and sometimes not really worth it. But you can have some spa time in your own cabin and treat yourself with these travel spa masks and treatments.

Foot Hammock

this one may be more for the flight over, but it can be used in your cruise cabin as well. I have a problem with my feet and legs falling asleep when I’m sitting for a long period of time so this foot hammock really helps with the circulation.

How do I make my cruise more fun?

There are a few things you can do to make your cruise more fun:

• Get to know your fellow passengers
• Try new foods and drinks – hey the food is all you can eat, try it all!
• Take advantage of all the activities the ship offers! Rope courses, shuffle board courts, ping pong tables and gaming rooms are all available for free or very cheap on most ships! There is always something that is going on somewhere on a cruise ship! Don’t miss out!

• Get romantic If one of the reasons you’re going on a cruise is to get some much needed alone time with your significant other.

Sexy Toys

These naughty but dice are a fun way to keep the spark alive. But don’t get too frisky, don’t have sex on the balcony, don’t bring handcuffs. Always check with your cruise line and make sure you know what items are prohibited.

Not thinking about baggage fees

When booking a flight, it’s important to keep in mind all of the associated costs.

This includes baggage fees, which can add up quickly if you’re not careful. So, be sure to factor this in when calculating the total cost of your flight.

Today, many airlines have basic economy fares that do not include a carry on (Jetblue, Spirit, United). Read the fine print! A flight may look cheap, but when you factor in bringing a carry on (or even a personal item) it’s not as cheap as you thought.

Personally, I don’t ever check a bag. I’ve had plenty of bad experiences, but if you’re one of those travelers that must check a bag for every trip, here’s some other things to consider when booking flights.

How much does the airline charge for checked bags?

In addition to charging for carry on bags on basic economy fares, most airlines also charge a fee for checked bags.

It can cost anywhere between $20 to $100 for just one checked bag. So, if you’re planning to check more than one bag, do your research and plan accordingly.

How much does your bag weigh?

Many airlines have weight limits for checked bags, and if your bag exceeds the limit, you’ll likely have to pay an excess baggage fee. So, be sure to pack light and avoid bringing any unnecessary items with you.

If baggage fees are starting to bum you out, don’t fret! There are ways to get around annoying baggage fees when booking flights.

Get an airline co-branded credit card

Airline co-branded credit cards can give you a leg up on extra fees associated with booking flights.

For instance, the JetBlue Plus card includes the first checked bag free for you and 3 companions on the same reservation.

That’s savings not just for you, but your travel buddies too!

If you have an airline co-branded credit card you’ll also have access to other perks, discounts, plus you’ll earn rewards points towards your next flight!

So, if you tend to fly the same airline more frequently than others, applying for an airline co-branded credit card may be more than worth it before you start planning your next trip.

Fly Southwest and get 2 checked bags free

Southwest airlines also has a co-branded credit card, but you won’t need it to get 2 checked bags for free.

One of my favorite perks about Southwest is the free checked bags. I still don’t like to check bags, but I love knowing the option is there in case I need it.

Bottom line, there can be hidden fees to consider when booking a flight. It’s important that you anticipate these fees and take them into consideration before booking your airfare.

Thinking that there’s a “cheapest day to book flights”

People are always asking about the cheapest day to book flights. I’ve even seen several blog posts saying that these days are Tuesdays or Thursdays.

It’s simply not true.

Scott’s Cheap flights has an article on the cheapest day to buy flights and I love this quote – “the cheapest day to buy flights is the day you find a great flight deal.“

As I mention in my post about saving money for your next vacation – airfares change daily, hourly, and sometimes even minute-by-minute. There’s no magic day to purchase that will have flights all of a sudden cheaper. However, the day you choose to fly may be a better factor when looking for cheap flights. According to an article from CNBC, Mondays Tuesdays or Wednesdays may be the cheapest days to fly.

If you’re on the hunt for a cheap flight, then you need to do the research and set flight alerts. Be flexible with your dates and destination, this is how you find the deals! If you see what you think may be a good deal, jump on it! Nowadays, most airlines will let you cancel at no penalty within 24 hours. Others will even give you a credit if you cancel at a later date without a fee.

Not considering a direct or non stop flight because it’s more expensive

If you’re traveling to a destination that is across the world, chances are that you need to make a connection.

However, you should always try to for the least amount of connections as possible. My rule is no more than 1 connection for a domestic flight or 2 for an international (depending on the destination of course).

I always book a direct flight when possible even if it’s a little more expensive. If it’s way out of your budget to book the direct flight, consider how much of your time it would cost if you missed a connection.

In some situations, it could significantly eat into your time at your destination. If you have checked bags, it may also cause you to lose your luggage and not get it back for a couple of days. Or worse, you may not get your luggage back until you get home from your trip.

If you do have a connecting flight, try to give yourself at least an hour (try for 2 hours) in between flights. This way if your first flight is delayed, you have some wiggle room before your connecting flight.

If you’re flying internationally and have connecting flights in different countries, you may need to go through customs even for a connecting flight.

This can take up a lot of time if you’re flight is running late and may cause you to miss your connection. Talk about a mess!

Always booking roundtrip flights

One thing that I’ve heard people say is that they didn’t realize that it’s not necessary to fly roundtrip with the same airline. It used to be that it was always more expensive to book separate one-way flights than it was to book roundtrip.

However, with airlines like Jetblue and Southwest each leg has their own price. Meaning, it’s the same price for each leg whether you book them together or separately. I’ve had a lot of luck searching for one way flights. It’s like mixing and matching flights!

One way flights are more flexible.

In some instances, I have been able to get better flight times and pricing when I book on two separate airlines.

For example: Let’s say that the cheapest ticket I can find is a round-trip ticket on Jetblue departing at 7am, but the returning flight departs at 7pm. I wanted an earlier return and was able to find a returning flight on Southwest departing at 11am instead of 7pm.

By booking 2 one-way tickets I was able to get the flexibility I needed for a comparable price (in many cases).

Plus, by booking my returning flight on Southwest I’m able to check 2 bags for free! I love being able to check bags on the return flight because I usually only bring a carry-on when I travel.

Not booking an early morning flight

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and get your vacation started on the right foot, booking an early morning flight is the way to go.

These flights are also the least likely to get delayed or cancelled because nothing has really happened yet.

There’s less flights in the morning which means less of a chance for something to go wrong. Flight cancellations or delays tend to affect late afternoon or evening flights.

I am NOT a morning person, but I will get up at whatever time I need to get the first flight of the day. I also love getting to my destination early and having time to settle in. I’ll go straight to my hotel and if my room isn’t ready, I’ll leave my luggage and explore!

It’s definitely less stressful and puts me in a great mood. 

Plus, early morning flights are typically cheaper than those later in the day. So save yourself some money and stress by booking an early morning flight the next time you travel.

Is packing a carry-on only possible or even a good idea?

In my experience, it’s unusual for me to check a bag. When we went on a family vacation to Italy back when I was in college, I learned my lesson.

Due to bad weather, our flight was delayed in Miami, so we missed our connection in Milan. We were stuck in the Milan airport for 8 hours waiting for a flight to Rome.

Needless to say, that was a nightmare but what’s even worse is the airline lost our luggage!

It took days for our luggage to be returned to us. Because of this mishap, I decided that if it could be avoided, I would never check a bag.

You do not realize how important it is to pack smart until something like this happens to you. The carry-on became my most essential travel accessory and I want it to be yours as well.

My goal with this post is to save you from the headache of lost luggage and being stuck with only the clothes on your back. Packing a carry-on doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful.

Choose the right carry-on

Choosing the right travel gear when you’re packing a carry-on for any trip length can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be. When it comes to choosing a carry-on, you’ve got choices. There the backpacks, rollers, hard shells, soft shells, travel duffels, two-wheelers, and four-wheelers.

But which is the right one?

I used to think that it didn’t matter where it came from, but after traveling more often I’ve realized that not all carry-ons are created equal.

I have 2 bags that I love, the Away Carry-On and the Monos Carry-On Plus.

I was able to snag my Away Carry-On during their first-ever sale at 40% off, but honestly, now that I’ve owned it for a while I would pay full price for it.

It’s light, durable, functional, and stylish.

Should you get a hard shell or soft shell?

Hard shells are great for protection but can add extra weight, while soft materials offer flexibility but might not shield your items from heavy rain or accidental spills.

Choosing a bag that balances these aspects with your specific needs will set you up for packing success. I love my hard shell!

I always felt like the soft shell was harder to fit in the overhead bins, but with a hard shell I know it will slide right in.

Important Note: Always check the carry-on regulations of the airlines you’ll be flying with.

Dimensions and weight limits can vary, and what works for one airline might not pass muster with another.

Opt for a bag that is versatile and fits within the most restrictive guidelines. That way you can avoid any last-minute gate-check surprises.

Packing Essentials

When packing your carry-on for a long trip, there are a few essentials you should never leave behind. These should be automatically included when packing.

Travel Documents

• Passport and visa(s)
• Personal ID/Driver’s License
• Boarding passes and travel itinerary (if not digital)
• Travel insurance information (if not digital)
• Emergency contacts and important addresses (if not digital, I have this in a note on my phone)

Health and Medication

• Prescription medications in original bottles
• Over-the-counter pain relievers and allergy pills
• Small first aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic wipes)
• Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
• Extra face masks

Change of Clothes

• A lightweight, versatile outfit
• Extra underwear and socks
• A sweater or scarf for layering (useful in chilly planes)

Toiletries

• Toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste
• Travel-sized deodorant
• Compact hairbrush or comb
• Lip balm and moisturizer (airplane cabins are dry)
• Sunscreen (if you’re heading to a sunny destination)

Tech and Entertainment

• Smartphone and charger
• Earphones or noise-cancelling headphones
• Portable power bank
• E-reader or tablet loaded with podcasts, books and movies (download before boarding)
• Travel adapter for international trips

Snacks and Hydration

• Non-liquid snacks (nuts, protein bars, dried fruit)
• An empty water bottle to refill post-security

Pack Light and Maximize Space

You’re probably thinking, “Duh, I’m only bringing a carry-on, of course, I’ll be packing light”.

Not necessarily.

Packing light doesn’t always mean packing smart. Forget about hoarding the space in your suitcase with tiny toiletries and instead be strategic about packing a carry-on.

Don’t bring items that can be purchased at your destination. Think about what your trip entails so you can plan before packing a carry-on.

Use Packing Cubes and/or Vacuum Seal Bags: Yes, they really do work! These small, lightweight bags compress your clothes and make it easier to keep things organized. Try to get the ones that are “compression” because not all packing cubes will compress your clothes even further.

I have “non compression” ones and although they do the job, it would be better if they also compressed. If you really need the space, the vacuum seal bags are magical!

Pack like you’re stacking a bookshelf: This may be a hot take, but I don’t roll. I fold my clothes and then stack them like I’m stacking a bookshelf. I find that my clothes compress better if I pack this way.

Layer and Fill: Start with heavier items like shoes at the bottom of your suitcase. I use every inch of space by filling shoes with small items like socks, sandals etc. This will help maximize every inch of space.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items: Rather than packing them, wear your heaviest shoes and bulkiest jacket on the plane. It might be a bit less comfortable, but it frees up a lot of space in your carry-on.

Strategic Folding for Bulky Items: For bulkier items like sweaters or blazers, use the bundle technique: lay clothes flat, place a small item like a pouch in the center, and wrap the clothes around the pouch. This keeps your bulkier items compact and can reduce creasing.

Zip and Compress: After packing, I use my compression straps to tighten everything down and then I compress it while I zipper.

Yea, I need to sit on it but it always zips! I haven’t broken a zipper yet!

Dress Smart and Strategically

First, figure out what you’re packing for. Plan your outfits ahead of time and choose clothes that are versatile and can be mixed and matched.

Choose Versatile Pieces: Start by selecting clothes that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits from a few pieces. Neutral colors like black, white, and grey are easy to coordinate.

Embrace Layering: Instead of packing separate outfits for different weather conditions, choose clothes that can be layered. A base layer like a t-shirt or tank top, a middle layer such as a cardigan or flannel shirt, and an outer layer like a lightweight jacket can be combined or worn separately depending on the temperature.

Plan Your Outfits: Before you pack, lay out all your clothes and plan your outfits day by day. I do this by going through my closet and just throwing stuff on the floor. I then start to create piles for clothes that fit together to make versatile outfits.

Like one pair of jeans can be 3-4 outfits if I pack different tops that easily packed.

Focus on Fabric: I like to choose fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant, thin and durable. I can fit a ton of tops in a carry-on if I choose the right fabric.

Consider Your Footwear: Shoes can take up a lot of space in your luggage, so I only bring what I need. I always have a pair of comfortable walking shoes, a casual slip-on, and a dressier option for evenings. I wear the bulkiest pair on the plane to save space.

Accessorize Wisely: I love to bring accessories like belts, hats, jewelry and even lightweight jackets because they can dramatically change the look of an outfit. I only bring a few versatile pieces.

How many clothes to pack?

Talking about being strategic about packing is all well and good, but you’re probably wondering exactly how many clothes I actually pack for a trip.

This is what I would pack for a 7-12 night trip:

Tops – 9 (all lightweight and folded easily)
Tanks – 4
T-Shirts – 3
Jeans – 2
Shorts – 5 (including bike shorts)
Dresses – 4
Socks – 10 pairs
Underwear – 12
Lightweight Jackets – 4
Sweat pants – 1
Nightgowns – 2
Bras – 4-6
Shoes – 2 (not including the sneakers I’ll wear on the plane)
Hair straightener – 1

I fit my toiletries, hair brush, laptop, makeup, and other misc stuff in my Calpak hue duffle bag which I use as a personal item.

Be strategic about your personal item

A personal item isn’t limited to a tiny thing. You’re fine as long as the it fits underneath your seat in front of you.

I have an inexpensive back pack from Target that has lots of compartments.

If I’m traveling with more than one pair of bulkier shoes, I’ll stow them in the backpack along with my toiletries, hair accessories, money, laptop, and anything else I can fit.

My backpack can get pretty bulky with everything, but it will STILL fit under the seat in front of me.

Just make sure that you are not also bringing a purse and if you are, it fits inside the back pack for when you’re going through security and boarding the plane.

Once you board the plane no one cares as long as everything can fit under the seat.

To be on the safe side, I double-checking the airline’s permitted size measurements.

Some are stricter about what is considered a personal item, but I’ve flown domestically around the US on Jetblue, Southwest, American, United, Delta and have never had a problem.

Bring a foldable bag for your return flight

One of my favorite tips and tricks for packing a carry-on for long trips is to bring a foldable duffle or backpack.

I’ll convert the duffle bag into my carry-on for the journey home, then check my original carry-on luggage. I found the foldable duffle bag that I use in the luggage section of Target. It was cheap and a good size. You’ll also find plenty on Amazon.

It’s great for packing souvenirs or maybe you just don’t want to fold everything as neatly as you did before (guilty). It fits easily in your carry-on or backpack, and can accommodate a lot of stuff.

If you have a non stop flight home then checking your carry on bag is not a huge risk.

Do Laundry

I know that last thing you want to think about when it comes to travel is – laundry. But it’s really not that bad or inconvenient.

If I’m only traveling for 4-6 days I won’t bother with laundry, but if the trip is closer to 2 weeks then its a possibility that we’ll have to do some laundry.

You can check with your hotel to see if they have laundry facilities, but if they have to send it out for you it’s probably expensive (depends on your destination.

I usually just Google “laundry near me” or something like that and take my clothes to a laundromat. This is when the laundry bags that come with good carry 0n luggage comes in handy!

FAQs

Can I take my straightener on my carry on? Yes, items like hair straighteners, and curling irons, are generally allowed in carry-on luggage. However, it’s always a good idea to check with the specific airline you’re flying with to ensure there are no restrictions or limitations.

Can I bring a steamer in my carry on? Most steamers are not allowed in carry-on luggage. Steamers often contain water and due to the heating element and the potential for leaks may be classified as hazardous materials. To be safe, pack a steamer in your checked luggage.

Can I bring a speaker in my carry on? Yes, portable speakers are generally allowed, but it’s a good idea to check the airline’s policies, as some airlines may have specific size or weight restrictions for carry-on items.

Can bar soap go in carry on? Yes, solid toiletries like bar soap generally do not fall under the liquid restrictions imposed by the TSA. However, if you have liquid or gel-based soaps, they should be packed in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and placed in a clear, quart-sized plastic bag.

Does a fanny pack count as a personal item? Yes, a fanny pack is considered a personal item. Most airlines allow passengers to bring a personal item in addition to a carry-on bag, and a fanny pack or a small purse are generally considered personal items.

Can you carry on an umbrella? Yes, you can carry an umbrella in your carry-on bag. Umbrellas are not typically restricted by the TSA, but it’s good to double-check with the specific airline.

Is a garment bag a carry-on? Yes, a garment bag can be considered a carry-on item, but it depends on its size and the airline’s policies. Some airlines may count a garment bag as a personal item or allow it as an additional carry-on, while others may require it to be stowed in the overhead bin.

Can I bring shaving cream in my carry-on? Shaving cream is subject to the TSA’s liquid restrictions. If you want to bring shaving cream in your carry-on, it must be in a container of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and placed in a clear, quart-sized plastic bag along with other liquids and gels.

You’ve got the tips, now it’s time to pack the carry-on!

Of course, there will be times when you must check your luggage even for a brief trip. That’s fine. You may still apply these methods to save space.
