1. Miami Beach
Ok, hear me out on this one! You’re probably like ok, wait Miami is so expensive! And you’d be right if you were thinking about the expensive areas in Miami, but Miami is big. Miami Beach is a barrier island between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic. It’s connected to the rest of Miami by a series of causeways.
Of course, Miami Beach can also get very expensive, but if you plan your trip right and use points and miles, you can find great deals on accommodations and flights. There are also a lot of free and cheap things to do in Miami Beach like hanging at Lincoln Road, Art Deco walking tours, and South Pointe Park.

2. Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay is on Florida’s Gulf Coast and has its own vibe compared to the Southeast coast of Florida. It’s a super popular area, but it also has a ton of budget-friendly activities while also being a beautiful place to visit.
You’ll want to grab a Tampa Bay CityPASS and get a bunch of stuff to do at one low price. The attractions include things like Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, and a Dolphin or Sunset cruise. You should also take a stroll along the Tampa Riverwalk and, visit Lettuce Lake Park and explore Ybor City.
3. Sarasota
Located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Sarasota is not only beautiful but has a wealth of affordable activities. Explore Siesta Key Beach and embrace the outdoors at Myakka River State Park, where affordable entrance fees grant access to expansive landscapes, airboat tours, and wildlife. 9. Fort Myers
Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Fort Myers is where my husband’s family spent 1 week every summer for over 20 years. It’s truly a special place, with amazing beaches, and beautiful sunsets. Fort Myers is also the gateway to the barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva. There are plenty of outdoor activities including a sunset dolphin tour.
10. Pensacola
Located on the western edge of the Florida Panhandle, Pensacola has stunning white sand beaches, historic buildings, and museums which include free admission on certain days of the week. Explore Big Lagoon State Park or take a scenic boat tour to see the dolphins!
11. Tallahassee
Located in the panhandle of Florida, Tallahassee is home to the Florida State Seminoles, my alma mater! But it’s so much more than that. Tallahassee is rich in history and culture. You can visit the Florida Historic Capitol Museum or Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park, there’s also a vibrant downtown district where you’ll find plenty of restaurants. You can even take part in a scavenger hunt!
12. Cocoa Beach
Located on Florida’s Space Coast, Cocoa Beach is all about sun, sand, and affordability. Explore the Thousand Islands Conservation Area and kayak through the mangrove tunnels. You can enjoy a picnic, walk along the beach, or embark on a dolphin tour on the Banana River.
13. Amelia Island

24. Lake Placid
Lake Placid is in the heart of Central Florida’s Highlands County. The town is known for its 27 freshwater lakes, making it the perfect place for a fishing getaway. Lake Placid’s Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State Park has a ton of low-cost and free nature activities like hiking trails, birdwatching, and opportunities to observe the unique scrub habitat.
25. Hollywood Beach
Hollywood Beach is located in the greater Fort Lauderdale area and stands apart from your typical Fort Lauderdale beach with its charming Broadwalk—a 2.5-mile brick-paved promenade adorned with shops, restaurants, and cafes. It’s a good alternative if you’re looking to be further away from the hustle and bustle of Fort Lauderdale.

Tips for Planning a Cheap Weekend Getaway in Florida

Consider Alternative Airports: There are many airports in Florida. Look into flying into or out of nearby airports and rent a car. You may be able to save hundreds.
Use Public Transportation: Florida isn’t known for its public transportation, but depending on your destination there may be some viable options.
Cook Meals: One of our favorite things about vacation rentals or any accommodations with a kitchen or kitchenette is being able to cook breakfast and make lunch so that we can splurge on dinner!
Look for Free and Low-Cost Activities: Research free or low-cost attractions, parks, and beaches. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much you can do at very little cost.
Which part of Florida is the cheapest to vacation?
North Florida is usually the cheapest to vacation in Florida. Cities like Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Pensacola are much more affordable compared to the more touristy areas in Central and South Florida.
You can find cheaper places to vacation near Central Florida if you avoid Orlando and instead explore areas around Ocala or Winter Haven. Cocoa Beach or Daytona Beach are also great options for affordable beach vacations.
