Does Google Flights include Southwest? Yes!

I have been using Google Flights since 2014 and firmly believe it’s the only tool you need to find the best flight prices.

It’s what I teach in my Free Budget Travel 1o1 course.

But Google Flights was missing one major thing…

Southwest Airlines did not historically allow Google Flights to show flight and pricing information.

So whenever I searched for flights, I would also need to look on the Southwest website separately to compare. This was a little inconvenient, but not the worst thing in the world.

But in May 2024, that all changed!

Southwest Airlines information showed up on Google Flights! This amazing development has changed flight search on Google for the better.

Why? Because Southwest Airlines is a solid U.S. budget airline. Their soft and hard product is consistent, they are reliable (we won’t talk about the meltdown of 2022) and their policies are fair.

In this article, we’ll dig deeper into why Southwest Airlines on Google Flights is great for travelers. We’ll talk about what Google Flights is, why Southwest Airlines is so special, and the key benefits of this new development. So let’s get to it!

What is Google Flights?

The concept of Google Flights is simple. It’s a free flight aggregator that helps you find and compare flight prices across different airlines all in one spot. It is NOT a 3rd party travel agency.

It’s like a flight shopping tool, allowing you to see the cheapest days to fly, different route options, and even set alerts for price drops.

Pros of Google Flights

Comprehensive Search Results: Google Flights quickly scans many airlines and booking sites and provides you with a wide range of options so you can easily find the best flight that works for you.

User-Friendly: It’s so easy to use Google Flights. They lay things out nicely making it simple to figure out how to find the best flight.

Flexible Date Search: I love the calendar view. It’s the first feature I use to figure out when I should travel. It makes it easy to spot the cheapest days to fly, especially if you’re flexible!

Price Tracking: This is by far the best part about Google Flights. You can set up an infinite amount of alerts to monitor price changes for specific routes. When pricing changes, you’ll get an email. I like to leave my alerts on even after I’ve booked my flight because if my flight price decreases I may have options to get money back or a flight credit.

Price Prediction: Google Flights will give you a summary of when it predicts the best time is to purchase a flight for your chosen route. This is invaluable information when it comes to deciding on when to purchase your flights.

No Booking Fees: Google Flights doesn’t add booking fees, it directs you straight to the airline or travel agency to purchase your flight.

Cons to Google Flights

No Loyalty Program Integration: If you are part of a frequent flyer program, Google Flights doesn’t display loyalty program benefits or allow you to filter flights based on potential reward benefits. However, there is now a Chrome extension called Points Path that can help with finding flights that you can purchase with points and miles!

Limited Filtering Options: While you can filter by stops, airlines, times, bags, price, emissions, connecting airports, and duration, other sites offer more detailed filters like Wi-Fi availability or aircraft type. However, I do think that Google Flight filters have all you need.

Occasionally Inaccurate Pricing: Sometimes the prices shown on Google Flights can be outdated due to the delay in updating fares, leading to discrepancies when you go to book. This is quite rare but can happen.

No Package Deals: Unlike some travel booking sites, Google Flights doesn’t offer the option to book hotels or rental cars alongside flights. I personally, prefer to book direct and do not purchase travel packages anyway.

What’s so special about Southwest?

Many budget travelers (including myself) love Southwest Airlines and for good reason. The airline is consistent in offering a solid product that will get you from A to B without trying to nickel and dime you into paying unnecessary fees.

Pros of Southwest Airlines

No Checked Bag Fees: Some passengers may make the mistake of overlooking Southwest’s checked bag policy. But one of the best perks to flying Southwest is the two free checked bags per passenger policy for any fare type. They are the only airline that offers this perk. We are firmly team carry on even for a one or 2 week trip, but this can lead to significant savings, especially for families and long-term travelers. If flying Southwest, we’ll usually check bags on our return flight.

No Change Fees: Southwest does not charge fees to change a ticket before the flight. You can update your flight up to 10 minutes before departure. This is a game changer because it offers more flexibility if plans change. It can even save you money on your fare because if the price drops it’s extremely easy to get a refund or credit back to your account.

Customer Service: Southwest is renowned for its customer service, they are known to go above and beyond to ensure passenger satisfaction. They have a friendly, casual approach that can make flying less stressful and more enjoyable.

Transfarency®: Southwest prides itself on transparency in advertising and communicating with customers. I love this about them! They aim to avoid hidden fees and simplify the travel process with straightforward pricing and policies.

Rapid Rewards Program: Of course, let’s not forget about their loyalty program which they call Rapid Rewards. I love using points and miles to pay for travel and their program offers easy-to-earn points that never expire. The program is straightforward, with unlimited reward seats and no blackout dates.

Cons to Southwest Airlines

Limited International Routes: Southwest primarily focuses on domestic flights within the United States. Although they do offer some international flights its nowhere near the level of other U.S.-based airlines. However, their domestic footprint is quite extensive.

No Assigned Seating: Now, this policy is a deal breaker for some. They do not offer assigned seating with any fare type. There are ways to give you a better chance of finding your ideal seat (getting on their A-List), but there are no guarantees. This can be stressful, but if you go into it knowing the drill you’ll be fine.

Basic In-flight Amenities: There are no frills when it comes to Southwest Airlines. You won’t find seatback entertainment (it’s BYOD – bring your own device) or power outlets on most flights. The snack options are also limited.

No Business Class or Premium Economy: Southwest only offers one class of service. So if you’re looking for premium amenities like larger seats or meal service, you won’t find it with Southwest.

Boarding Process: The boarding process can be chaotic if you’re not used to it. You’re assigned to a boarding group and a space in line. It can be stressful because other passengers may not be so considerate, but again if you know the drill you’ll be fine.

Limited Code-share Agreements: Southwest is not part of an alliance or larger network of airlines. So that does limit options.

What are the benefits of having Southwest on Google Flights?

Now that Southwest shows up in Google Flight search results, it makes searching for flights even easier than before giving you a broader range of flight options all in one place.

This makes it so much easier to make an informed decision and compare prices and schedules across multiple airlines giving you the best chance for finding affordable flight options to match your preferences.

Here are some reasons why this is such a big deal:

Transparency in Pricing: Now that it’s possible to see Southwest’s fares on Google Flights you can better understand the final cost of flights. Especially when you take into account the value of free checked bags and no change fees, compared to other airlines that might offer a lower headline price but charge additional fees.

Better Planning: For travelers like me, whose priority is finding the most convenient or fastest routes, having access to Southwest’s extensive network of domestic flights on Google Flights means more options.

Alerts and Tracking: This is huge! Southwest does not offer flight price tracking, but now that these flights are showing up in Google Flights you can set price tracking and alerts. This makes is even easier to update your flight if the price goes down, especially without any change fees!

The verdict?

Having Southwest Airlines show up in Google Flights search results is a major game changer for the budget traveler. Not only does it make searching for affordable flights more convenient, but with the price tracking and alerts there’s no longer any reason not to get the best price on flights.

Even if you don’t consider yourself an avid Southwest customer, maybe this new development will pique your interest since now you’ll be seeing their logo pop up more now in your searches!

10 Great Ways to Save Money on Disney World Hotels

You are not alone, everyone who is looking to travel to the most magical place on Earth wants to do it while spending as little as possible. In this post, we will explore ways to save money on Disney World hotels.

I have lived in Florida my whole life and have spent many times traveling up to Orlando to spend time at Disney World as an annual pass holder.

I’ve also stayed on-site at Disney-owned resorts, Disney Springs Area hotels, and off-site resorts and hotels. So, I know the ins and outs of figuring out Disney World accommodations.

From visiting during the off-season to using points and miles to help offset the cost or even erase it, you will have everything you need to plan your next trip to Disney World without breaking the bank on Disney World hotels.

Whether you’re planning a girls trip to Disney World, a magical romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a trip of any type, these tips will give you what you need to save money on Disney World hotels.

You can use that extra cash saved for Disney tickets, food or even souvenirs!

1. Visit during Off-Peak Dates

If you can be flexible with your dates, traveling during off-peak dates will save money on Disney World hotels. We like to check the Disney World crowd calendars to confirm the best times to visit, but it’s generally going to be during the weekdays while kids are in school.

Best Times to Visit:

Late January through early February
Late April through early June (before schools let out)
Late August through September

Late January through early February is after the holiday rush and before the spring break crowds. You can enjoy much cooler weather with fewer crowds. This is my favorite time to visit Disney World!

Late April through early June is another sweet spot between spring break and the start of the summer vacation season, with the bonus of nice weather.

Lastly, late August through September marks the end of summer and the start of the school year, which not only sees a decrease in crowds but also often lowers hotel rates and promotional offers direct from Disney World. Additionally, you want to avoid major U.S. holidays.

2. Use Points to book your Disney World Hotel

My favorite way to save on travel is to earn and redeem points and miles.

I like to do this by being strategic about my everyday spending and using credit cards, but you can also earn points without applying for new credit cards.

The point is to earn loyalty points on purchases you already plan to make so that you can get the most out of your money!

Luckily, Disney World has an “on property” hotel that can be booked with loyalty rewards points, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin which is a Marriott property. This means that it can be booked with Marriott Bonvoy points!

3. Get reimbursed by your Credit Card

A great way to offset the cost of your hotel stay at Disney World is to use credit card points and miles to reimburse you for the purchase. The best credit card (in my opinion) to do this with is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Not only is it a great premium travel card with many travel benefits, but you can redeem miles and reimburse eligible travel purchases on the credit card statement.

The purchase must be coded as travel and can only be credited within 90 days of the travel purchase.

The Capital One Venture X does have a $395 annual fee, but don’t let that scare you there are ways to offset the annual fees to make them worth it.

Here’s how to get reimbursed:

Make Your Booking: Use your Capital One Venture X card to book your hotel stay. Ensure that the booking will be coded as travel. Usually, when you book directly with the hotel, it should be coded as travel.

Check Your Statement: After your stay, keep an eye on your credit card statement to confirm that the hotel purchase was indeed coded as travel and eligible for reimbursement.

Apply Reimbursement: Within 90 days of your purchase, you can apply your Venture Miles to cover eligible travel purchases.

The redemption is done at a fixed value of 1 cent per point. So if you have 100,000 Venture Miles, they are worth $1,000 for eligible travel purchases.

4. Book through a Credit Card Travel Portal with points

Another credit option for using credit card points is to book through the travel portal. This provides flexibility because even if you don’t have a credit card that can transfer points to Marriott or other hotel loyalty programs you may still be able to use your points to book hotels at Disney World!

Considerations When Booking Through a Portal:

Redemption Value: The value of points can vary significantly across different credit card travel portals. For instance, Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are redeemed at a fixed value of 1.25 cents per point for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or 1.5 cents per point with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

Availability and Restrictions: Some hotels on third-party booking sites or the hotel’s website might not appear in credit card travel portals. Some bookings made through these portals might not be eligible for hotel loyalty points or status benefits.

Promotions and Deals: Occasionally, travel portals offer special promotions or deals that enhance the value of your points or provide additional perks, such as room upgrades or late checkout. You’ll want to keep an eye out for these offers so that you can maximize your benefits.

Booking Disney Hotels through the Chase Travel Portal

Even if you don’t want to use your points to pay for the hotel through the credit card travel portal, it can still make sense to book this way if your credit card gives you a travel credit or offers bonus points.

In the image below, you’ll see I have a $100 credit (when spending $500 or more) to use with the Citi Travel Portal from my Citi Strata Premier℠ At the time they were also offering 10X bonus points when booking hotels through Citi Travel when paying cash.

5. Use Free Night Certificates

Free Night Certificates have different terms and conditions for every loyalty program, but they are a voucher for a free night stay.

Leveraging these certificates can significantly reduce the overall cost of your trip to Disney World.

In most instances, you will not be able to use a free night award for a Disney-owned property, but they can work for the Swan and Dolphin through Marriott Bonvoy if you can find eligible nights which is possible if you’re flexible with your dates!

How to Earn Free Night Certificates:

Hotel Loyalty Programs: Many hotel chains offer free night certificates as part of their loyalty program rewards, earned by reaching certain membership tiers or after a set number of stays within a calendar year. Examples are Hilton and Marriott.

Credit Card Benefits: Specific travel credit cards partner with hotel brands to offer annual free night certificates to cardholders as part of the card’s benefits.

Maximizing the Value of Free Night Certificates:

Understand the Terms: Certificates often come with conditions, such as blackout dates, category or hotel restrictions, points caps, and expiration dates. You’ll want to ensure that you are familiar with these before using your free night award.

Combine with Other Rewards: Sometimes you can pair a free night certificate with points or cash stays to help cover your stay.

6. Stay at Disney Springs Area Hotels

Staying at Disney Springs Area hotels will give you a blend of value and Disney magic where you can enjoy some perks of staying on Disney property without the higher price tag.

These hotels provide convenient access to dining, shopping, and entertainment within a short walk or complimentary shuttle ride to the Disney parks.

As a bonus, many of the Disney Springs Area hotels are part of well-known hotel loyalty programs, such as IHG, Hilton Honors, and Wyndham Rewards.

This gives you the option to use loyalty points and miles to offset or completely cover the cost of your hotel stay at Disney World!

7. Stay offsite

As much as I love Disney-owned and non-owned hotels at Disney World, there are plenty of amazing options offsite as well. Disney-approved offsite properties near Disney World are called “Good Neighbor Hotels”.

Many of these hotel properties are with a variety of major hotel chains so you have the option to use points and book directly on the hotel website, maybe use a statement credit option or you may be able to find them on the travel portal.

We have stayed at many of these hotels and you really can’t go wrong as they are carefully selected by Disney to be included on the list of Good Neighbor Hotels.

8. Purchase discounted Disney Gift Cards

Another great way to save on a trip to Disney World including your accommodations is to save up for the trip by purchasing discounted Disney Gift Cards.

Disney Gift Cards are an acceptable payment method across Disney parks, resorts, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Store locations in the U.S., and shopDisney.com.

They can cover practically every expense associated with your trip, from park tickets and hotel stays to dining, merchandise, and even annual passes.

Finding Discounted Disney Gift Cards

The key to this strategy lies in purchasing Disney gift cards at a discount. Here’s how you can find discounted Disney gift cards:

Warehouse Clubs: You may find Disney Gift Cards at places like Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale at a slight discount. Even savings of 2-5% can add up, especially on larger purchases.

Grocery and Retail Stores: Some grocery stores may have discounted gift cards or if you have a store credit card like the Target RedCard you could get 5% back when purchasing Disney Gift Cards at Target. I’ve even found discounted Disney Gift Cards online at Best Buy!

Credit Card Rewards: Use credit cards that offer bonus points or cash back at certain retailers that offer Disney Gift Cards. For example, some credit cards give you bonuses at grocery stores or office supply stores where Disney Gift Cards are sold.

Gift Card Resale Sites: Websites that sell discounted gift cards may occasionally list Disney gift cards. While these offers can be more sporadic, they’re worth checking out for potential savings.

9. Earn Cash Back with Shopping Portals

We all shop, so why not earn cash back on these purchases on top of any credit card points you may be earning? I’m talking about shopping portals!

These online portals offer a percentage of your purchase back in the form of cashback which can be cashed out for gift cards, deposited into your bank account, or in some instances, credit card points.

This can be another way that you save up for that trip to Disney World!

Maximizing Your Earnings

Look for Special Promotions: Shopping portals frequently run promotions offering higher cash-back rates or bonus points. Plan your larger purchases around these promotions to maximize your earnings.

Refer Friends: Many shopping portals offer referral bonuses when a friend signs up and makes a purchase through the portal.

Combine with Credit Card Rewards: Use a travel rewards credit card for your purchases through the portal to earn cash back, points, or miles from both the card and the portal, this is called stacking, effectively doubling your rewards on the same purchase.

10. Renting Disney Vacation Club Points

Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Members own points that they can use to book stays at DVC resorts. When members can’t use their points, they often rent them out, giving non members an opportunity to experience these resorts at a fraction of the cost.

How It Works:

Find a Point Rental Service or a DVC Member: You can rent DVC points directly from owners via forums, social media like Instagram or Facebook Groups, or websites dedicated to DVC rentals. There are also DVC point rental services which will act as a go-between for DVC members and renters.

Choose Your Dates and Resort: Decide on your travel dates and preferred DVC resort. Availability can be competitive, especially during peak seasons, so having flexibility in your travel dates or resort choices can increase your chances of securing a reservation.

Calculate Points and Cost: Each DVC resort and room type requires a certain number of points per night, varying by season. Rental services and DVC members typically charge a per-point rate. This rate is often significantly lower than booking the same room through Disney directly with cash.

Complete the Reservation: Once you confirm availability and agree to the rental terms, the DVC member or rental service will book the reservation in your name. You’ll receive a confirmation directly from Disney.

Things to Consider:

Cancellation Policies: Renting points often comes with strict cancellation policies. Understand the terms before booking, as changes or cancellations might be limited or incur fees.

Advance Planning: DVC members can book resorts up to 11 months in advance, so you’ll want to plan early to secure the best options.

Payment Policies: Most rentals require full payment upfront, and you may need to pay a deposit when you submit your reservation request.

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that if you are strategic and savvy, you can save money on Disney World hotels.

Whenever I’m planning a trip on a budget there are different strategies that I use to get the best price for my wallet and travel style. My favorite is the practice of maximizing travel rewards and benefits.

This can include leveraging loyalty programs, credit card rewards, promotions, discounts, and other tactics to make travel more affordable, comfortable, and luxurious.

By strategically combining different methods and staying informed about the latest deals and opportunities, I can make the most of my travel experiences while minimizing expenses.

There are many myths about earning travel rewards so that’s why we focus on content that can help you figure out whether earning travel rewards is right for you.

Let’s get to cruising!

1. Use Points with Credit Card Rewards Portals

If you’re leveraging everyday spending by earning rewards with credit cards then you may be able to book your cruise through one of the credit card portals by paying with points.

In some cases, you can book with a combination of points and cash.

Chase Ultimate Rewards®: You can’t actually book a cruise through Chase Travel℠, but you can call Chase and use your points to book.

Citi Thank You Points: You used to be able to be able to book a cruise through the Citi Travel portal, but since it’s now managed by booking.com I no longer see this option.

However, you may want to call and ask about it. I bet you would be able to book over the phone.

American Express Travel: You can book a cruise through the AMEX travel portal with the Pay with Points program.

Hot Tip

If you are a The Platinum Card® from American Express or Centurion Cardmember then you’ll have access to the Cruise Privileges program.
This program means more perks like onboard credit and amenities.
You must book through AMEX Travel with your Platinum or Centurion credit card.
Not all cruise lines are eligible.

It may not be the best choice to book a cruise with points since you’ll likely get better value redeeming for flights or hotels.

However, if you really want to go on a cruise and this is how you can pay for it, then it’s a-ok in my book!

Some of these credit cards will have annual fees and you’ll need to evaluate the benefits to see if it’s worth it.

2. Book a Cruise with Marriott Bonvoy Points

If you have a large stash of Marriott Bonvoy points you can use them to book with The Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection.

It will cost you at least 180,000 points to save $1,000 towards your cruise and then you can redeem in increments of 90,000 points for $500 towards your cruise up to the entire price of the cruise.

So a $2,000 cruise would cost you about 360,000 points.

Hot Tip

Marriott Bonvoy also has a Cruise with Points program that allows you to redeem Marriott Bonvoy points for credit towards any cruise line that participates in the program.

3. Book through Airline Portals

As an alternative to booking a cruise with points and miles via a credit card rewards portal.

You can also use your points to book cruises through an airline portal like United Cruises.

If you don’t want to use points to book a cruise, then you can opt to earn points as well.

Or you can do a combination of points and cash to give yourself a discount!

Other airline portals that you can book cruises with are American Airlines Cruises or Delta SkyMiles Cruises, but you can just google “airline”+ cruise and find more options.

Be sure to keep an eye out for booking fees.

Most of these sites will have a 110% best-price guarantee. This can be a nice perk depending on how much time you have between booking and embarkation.

Again, may be not the best use of points but hey it’s all about saving money so that’s always a win!

Hot Tip!

If you are a holder of a co-branded credit card or have elite status with one of these airlines they may offer you more perks like a higher earning rate on money spent booking cruises through their specific portal.

4. Erase the cost of a Cruise with a Credit Card Statement Credit

Did you know that you can get reimbursed for certain travel expenses using credit card statement credits?

This can include cruises!

Chase Sapphire Reserve® – offers a $300 annual general travel credit, which automatically applies to a wide range of travel-related expenses, including cruises.

All information about the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has been collected independently by Traveling Franklins.

If the charge codes as travel it will be automatically reimbursed up to the $300 limit each year.

Now the annual fee for this credit card is $550 per year, so you’ll need to make sure you’re getting enough value to offset that fee.

Citi Prestige Card: offers a $250 annual travel credit, which can be used towards a variety of travel expenses, including cruises.

Unfortunately, this credit card is not available to new applicants, but it’s good to know if you already have it!

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: offers a feature called Purchase Eraser, which allows you to redeem miles and reimburse eligible travel purchases on the credit card statement.

The purchase must be coded as travel and can only be erased within 90 days of the travel purchase.

Of course, you’ll need to have earned enough Capital One Venture Miles to erase the purchase.

If you can’t use it for the cruise, try erasing other travel expenses like hotels or flights.

Other Capital One credit cards with the Purchase Eraser feature include Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card.

5. Add Credit Card Offers

Have you checked your credit card offers lately?

Many different credit cards will give you cash back for purchases through certain merchants.

These offers usually need to be activated which is why I use CardPointers to activate all of my credit card offers for me.

6. Book a Cruise through Costco Travel

As a Costco member, you’ll have access to exclusive deals and discounts with cruise lines, allowing you to access competitive pricing that you won’t find elsewhere.

Booking through Costco Travel can also include extra perks and amenities like onboard credits, complimentary upgrades, prepaid gratuities, beverage packages, or shore excursion credits.

Booking through Costco Travel is just like booking through a 3rd party site.

So if you need to make any changes or have questions you’ll have to go through Costco. But it’s worth looking into!

Hot Tip!

Look for Buyer’s Choice or Kirkland Signature. If you find deals marked as Buyer’s Choice or Kirkland Signature you could be getting 15-20% more value!

7. Owning Stock in Cruise Lines

This is an interesting option.

Many cruise lines, such as Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, offer shareholder benefits to investors who own a specified number of shares in the company.

These benefits typically include onboard credits and discounted cruise fares.

The required number of shares varies by cruise line and may range from as few as 100 shares to several hundred shares.

Now, of course, investing in individual stocks carries inherent risks. But if you already dabble in the stock market, this may be something to consider if you find the benefits are worth it.

I would suggest doing some research on the particular cruise line to make sure this is the right move for you!

8. Cruise Discounts

Many cruise lines offer special discounts if you’re eligible.

You’ll need to provide proof of eligibility and will want to inquire before you actually book the cruise as these discounts will be subject to availability and not available for all cabin categories.

So it’s worth looking into, but just because you are eligible for a discount doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best deal for you and your situation.

Military Discounts

If you’re active military, retired military, or a veteran you may be able to get a discount on cruises.

These discounts typically apply to service members and their immediate family members, but this varies by cruise line. To qualify for military discounts, proof of service is usually required at the time of booking.

Senior Discounts

Some cruise lines offer discounts for passengers who are 55 years of age or older.

These discounts may apply to select sailings and cabin categories. To qualify for senior discounts, passengers typically need to be of the specified age at the time of booking.

Group Discounts

Group rates may include discounted fares, onboard credits, and other perks. The size of the group required to qualify for discounts varies by cruise line, but you may need a minimum of 10 cabins.

Sometimes, the benefits or incentives are passed on to the Group organizers rather than the individual staterooms.

AAA or AARP Discounts

If you’re a member of AAA or AARP you may be eligible for cruise discounts and special offers.

To access these discounts, you’ll probably need to book your cruise through the organization’s travel portal or website.

And if you didn’t already know, it’s not a requirement to be 55 or older to become a member of AARP.

9. Repositioning Cruises

Cruise lines want to make money so when they have to move their cruise ship from one region to another, they want to make money on that trip. Insert repositioning cruises!

Repositioning cruises is when cruise ships need to relocate from one region to another to align with seasonal demand or itinerary changes.

These cruises typically occur during the shoulder seasons, such as spring and fall, when cruise lines move ships between popular cruising regions, such as the Caribbean and Europe.

Here’s why they are usually cheaper:

One-Way Voyage: Repositioning cruises are typically one-way voyages, so passengers will need to make their own way to their final or return destination.
Fewer Ports of Call: Since the primary purpose of a repositioning cruise is to relocate the ship rather than focus on maximizing the number of destinations visited, there may be fewer port fees, excursions, and other activities.
Off-Peak Travel Season: Repositioning cruises typically occur during off-peak and shoulder seasons where demand is lower for cruises.
Need to Fill Cabins: Cruise lines aim to maximize occupancy by repositioning cruises to offset the cost of relocating the ship.

10. Cruise Line Promotions

Booking directly with a cruise line can have its perks instead of booking through a 3rd party like a travel portal or with Costco Travel.

Cruise lines offer promotions like onboard credits, free upgrades, or complimentary amenities.

Cruise lines have to give 3rd party companies a cut of their profits so they would rather you book with them directly.

If there are some cruise lines that you like, make sure you’ve signed up for their newsletters, following them on social media, and regularly checking the official website to stay informed.

11. Book Onboard

Have you ever thought about booking your next cruise while you’re still on your current cruise?

This can save you some money!

Cruise lines offer special onboard booking discounts, including reduced fares, onboard credits, and cabin upgrades.

These are usually referred to as Future cruise credits (FCCs) and they are pretty flexible. So next time you’re on a cruise, consider booking your next cruise while you’re still onboard.

12. Buy Discounted Gift Cards

Another way to save money for a cruise is to purchase discounted gift cards.

For example, you can find discounted Disney gift cards at wholesale stores like Costco and use that as your travel fund.

I also like to pick up Visa gift cards while I’m at the grocery store or office supply store and pay with a credit card that will earn me 3x or 5x points on the purchase.

13. Book Through a Travel Agent or Travel Advisor

Another popular way to book a cruise is with a travel agent or travel advisor and this does come with some perks. Cruise Travel Advisors can have access to group discounts and other perks like onboard credit, but I think the biggest perks are their knowledge and price monitoring.

if you are new to cruising, a travel advisor can give you valuable insight while also checking for price drops and they handle everything for you.

It shouldn’t cost you anything to book with a travel agent so it can be a good way to save yourself some time and money!

There are many great cruise deal sites out there that can help you choose and book your cruise.

These sites list some of the best cruise discounts available.

Some of the best sites for this are Cruise Critic and Vacations To Go. Just keep in mind that you are booking through a 3rd party, but if it’s the right deal it may be worth it!

Booking Cruises on a Budget FAQs

What are the best times to find budget-friendly cruise deals?

You’ll find many cruise promotions during what is appropriately called “Wave Season” starting from January to March.

So if you’re looking to take a cruise in the Fall, you may find the best prices in Q1 of that year.

But honestly, cruise lines offer deals all year long.

The key is to be flexible and either book far in advance for “early bird” deals or very last minute.

If you book a cruise and the price goes down try calling the cruise line to see if you can get additional perks like onboard credit or if you booked with a refundable deposit, cancel and rebook.

How much does it cost to go on a cruise?

Many people, especially those who are not familiar with cruises have no idea how much a cruise should cost so they have a hard time pulling the trigger when it comes to booking a cruise.

Well, the problem is – “it depends”.

Yup, it sucks, but it’s true.

The cost of your cruise really depends on what type of experience you’re looking for.

Are you looking for luxury?
Do you care about the food?
Do you care about the crowd?
Do you care about a balcony?
How many nights?
How many ports of call?
How big is the ship? Is it new or old?

What you need to keep in mind is that cruise lines tend to advertise the base cruise fare and then as you dig deeper you find out that the total cost for the cruise is double what you originally thought.

And then you have to factor in extras like internet or drink packages.

It all adds up.

I like cruise lines that keep it simple like Virgin Voyages and Celebrity Cruises.

My best advice would be to start looking at cruises and pricing things out.

It will be easier to decide how much you’re willing to spend once you see how much cruises will actually cost.

Just pick a destination and start playing around with dates.

Are there any loyalty programs or rewards programs for frequent cruisers?

Yes, many cruise lines offer loyalty programs where you can earn points and/or status based on the number of cruises you take or the money you spend.

These programs often include perks such as onboard credits, discounts, complimentary amenities, and priority services for repeat cruisers.

These loyalty programs can also be a trap to keep you from trying out other cruise lines. If you truly enjoy one cruise line and you are fine with not experiencing others then that’s great!

But for me, I like to try out different experiences and figure out what I truly enjoy and value. It’s up to you!

How to decide on the best way to book a Cruise

Although cruises are viewed as a way to vacation on a budget, they can still get pretty expensive. It all depends on the cruise line, ship, cabin type, ports of call, etc.

And personally, I don’t like to settle on just anything to save a buck. I like to find savvy and strategic ways to travel how I want on my budget!

So my best advice when it comes to booking a cruise is to start somewhere, anywhere. Whether it’s with a travel advisor, a cruise discount website, a credit card travel portal, an airline portal, or whatever it is just start looking!

Don’t make things too complicated. The base cruise fare is usually the same with all of these sites. It’s usually the perks and extras that can put things over the top.

Budget travel doesn’t automatically mean cheap travel. You don’t have to sacrifice your travel style, comfort or convenience.

To travel on a budget means to focus on value rather than strictly cost. It’s about making smart choices and getting the most bang for your buck.

I love to travel and sometimes I like to the more luxurious travel experiences, but I don’t want to pay full price. When I worked in the hospitality industry, I could get team member discounts for as little as $29/night!

So when I made a career change, that meant that I had to find ways to travel, but for less. That’s how I found techniques like earning points and miles with travel rewards credit cards and using Google Flights to find the best price. You can do this too!

It’s not about the cheapest price, but the best price.

Budget travel is about making every dollar count, about optimizing your resources to get the best bang for your buck. It’s a strategic and intentional approach to creating a memorable experience without compromising on comfort, quality, or convenience.

This is a big one! Just because you travel on a budget doesn’t mean that you need to only go on backpacking trips. Explore less touristy, but just as amazing destinations.

Use Points and Miles

Loyalty programs, points/miles, and travel rewards credit cards are my favorite ways to save money on travel! It’s the main way that I’m able to avoid paying full price without sacrificing the things I love the most about travel.

You can earn points and miles through everyday purchases by using things like shopping portals and dining programs. But if you also pay for those purchases with a travel rewards credit card, you’re earning even more points with very little effort.

You don’t need to apply for a bunch of credit credit cards to benefit from earning points and miles. Anyone can get into points/miles regardless of how much you want to put into it.

Austin, Texas, is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” and has a ton of options for fun daytime and nightlife fun. From iconic music bars on Sixth Street to outdoor concerts in Zilker Park.

San Juan, PR

San Juan, Puerto Rico has a blend of tropical beaches, culture, and historic charm. Puerto Rico is a United States territory so a passport is not required for U.S. citizens. The city’s stunning beaches, such as Condado Beach and Isla Verde Beach, offer free and affordable relaxation.

You can’t beat San Juan’s nightlife scene with so many bars and nightclubs from Distrito T-Mobile to La Placita. The most affordable time to visit San Juan is between August and November.

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, is a hidden gem and an excellent destination for a budget-friendly bachelorette trip. The valley is nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains the perfect backdrop for a bachelorette party.

Napa Valley has nothing on the Shenandoah Valley which is home to numerous wineries, breweries, and cideries with many offering tastings and tours. You’ll love the region’s farm-to-table culture and visiting charming towns like Staunton. The most affordable time to visit Shenandoah Valley is late spring (April to May) or early fall (September to October).

Wait did we already talk about this one? Nope, there’s another Portland that would make the perfect location for a bachelorette trip on a budget. Portland, Maine has a charming coastal setting and delicious seafood.

Portland has plenty of affordable outdoor activities like a scenic ferry ride to the nearby islands, like Peaks Island or a sunset cruise. The most affordable time to visit Portland, Maine is March, April, or May.

Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia, has the perfect mix of Southern Charm and fun nightlife making it a great option for a bachelorette trip. The lively River Street and City Market have plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops.

Planning a trip can be both exciting and also pretty stressful. There are already many options available, but determining whether to book directly with airlines or use online travel agencies (OTAs) can make the decision even more overwhelming.

I have been on countless flights, visiting over 30 states and hundreds of cities in the United States and abroad. That means I’ve done my fair share of searching for flights. So I know a thing or two when it comes to booking flights and how to decide between booking direct or through an OTA.

Each approach has its advantages and finding the right one can greatly impact your overall travel experience. So let’s take a look at the various factors that should influence this decision, so you’ll feel empowered to choose the approach that aligns best with your individual travel style and budget.

What are OTAs?

Online travel agencies (OTAs) are platforms that serve as the middleman between consumers (you) and various service providers, such as airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and tour operators. There are probably thousands of online travel agencies that exist, big or small.

People like to use OTAs because they can consolidate a lot of info in one place, making it easier to compare options, find deals, and complete their bookings conveniently online.

OTAs generally have user-friendly websites and mobile apps, allowing you to search for flights, hotels, and other travel-related services based on your preferences.

How do OTAs make money?

There are several ways that OTAs can make money, but probably the primary source is through commission from the airline or service provider.

When you book flights, hotels, or any service through their platform the OTA receives a commission from the service provider. This commission is typically a percentage of the total booking value.

This works for OTAs because they usually facilitate a high volume of bookings because people perceive them as more convenient and “cheaper” than booking direct.

What a lot of people like about OTAs are the opportunities for additional services and add-ons like seat upgrades, travel insurance, airport transfers, or activities and tours. This generates additional revenue for them.

Are OTAs always cheaper?

Not really.

Contrary to popular belief, OTAs don’t always guarantee lower prices compared to booking directly with the airline. They can often offer competitive rates, but in some cases, the prices are exactly the same or may actually be slightly higher.

However, despite the slightly higher prices, a lot of people are willing to pay for the convenience and additional services provided by the OTA, such as comparison tools, user reviews, and package bookings.

But nowadays, airlines are increasingly incentivizing consumers to book directly with them. They offer exclusive discounts, loyalty program benefits, and other perks to bypass OTAs and establish a direct relationship with customers.

What is the 24 hour rule?

The 24-hour rule is a Department of Transportation federal rule that allows travelers to cancel or change their flight bookings within 24 hours of making the reservation without any fees or penalties.

This means that even if you book a non-refundable or fully restricted fare you can cancel or make changes at no penalty, but only if it’s within 24 hours of making the booking.

This regulation applies to flights originating or departing from the United States. But this rule technically only applies to airlines and not necessarily to flights booked with an OTA.

You should always check the specific terms and conditions of your booking and consult with the airline or OTA for compliance with the 24-hour rule.

The Convenience Factor

When it comes to booking travel, there are two factors that hold high value for me: comfort and convenience. I will not just always choose the cheapest option because for me that’s not always the best option.

Personally, I’m willing to pay a bit more for a direct flight rather than saving a few bucks and risking potential delays or lost luggage with a connecting flight. Even if the savings are significant, say $100 or $200, I’d probably still opt for the more convenient choice to avoid unnecessary stress.

If you’ve never run into a situation where you miss a connecting flight or lose your luggage consider yourself lucky. It can ruin a day or even an entire trip.

So when it comes to deciding whether to book your flights through an OTA or direct with the airline, convenience should play a significant role in the process.

Booking Direct

Booking directly with the airline allows you to have complete control over your booking. Most major airlines (and even small ones) don’t even charge you additional change fees.

Another convenience of booking directly is the ability to communicate directly with the airline. When you book through an OTA everything has to go through them which in some cases can be a hassle.

Flexibility is huge with airlines these days since the pandemic. More and more airlines are offering no additional change fees and more flexible fares to give consumers more options when booking flights.

Booking with OTAs

On the other hand, using OTAs offers convenience, but their change policies may be subject to additional fees and coordination between the OTA and the airline. This can be a pretty unpleasant experience.

However, OTAs are a one-stop shop offering packages that include flights, accommodations, and other services. This can be convenient and save you from hopping between multiple websites.

But although the OTAs do offer package deals that can sometimes be cheaper, you should not assume that this is always the case. Nowadays, major airlines also offer vacation packages of their own. Allowing you to book flights, hotels, and other services for one price.

Note: Always pay attention to the change and cancellation policies, potential fees, and any restrictions that may apply to your specific flight booking.

What about loyalty programs?

If maximizing loyalty programs is important to you then booking directly with airlines will give you the best access to their loyalty programs. You’ll typically be able to earn miles and elite status which comes with added benefits and possible award redemptions for free or almost free flights.

OTAs may have their own loyalty programs, but they may not always give you the opportunity to earn miles or status with the airline when you book with them.

If you fly with a few specific airlines regularly it’s usually much better to always book directly with the airline as you’ll receive more rewards and benefits.

The Cost Comparison

Of course, when planning a trip, one of the key factors is going to be cost. OTAs may give off the impression that if you book with them you’re always getting the best deal, but as mentioned previously that may not be the case.

When you’re searching for flights you may notice that OTAs don’t always offer the cheapest fare and sometimes the fares are exactly the same as if you booked directly or in some cases a little more expensive.

Some OTAs will offer the service of refunding you if the price of your flight goes down, but this is not a free service. They charge for this service and if the price does not go down you don’t get your money back.

If you book with the airline directly and the price goes down, you will most likely be able to go online and easily update your reservation for a travel credit and in some cases get a refund.

Booking Direct

When booking direct with the airline you may have access to exclusive deals and promotions that are only available for customers who have booked direct.

You may find that when you go to check in for your flight that an upgrade is available at a discount or you can book a seat with better legroom and additional perks like early boarding.

Remember, OTAs are not necessarily always going to be the cheapest. If you book direct you’ll never pay for price markups. When you cut out the middleman, you eliminate the additional costs that OTAs might add to cover their own expenses and profit margins.

You’ll know this because of the transparency of pricing. Airlines will always provide a breakdown of the total cost, including any additional fees or taxes.

Booking with OTAs

OTAs can often negotiate discounted rates with airlines due to their volume of bookings. This results in competitive prices that may be lower than what you can find by booking directly.

Additionally, some OTAs offer package deals that bundle flights, accommodations, and other services together at a discounted rate, further maximizing your cost savings. But Airlines may also offer this too.

But remember that OTAs may charge service fees or booking fees, which can affect the overall cost. Or they may purposely charge inflated change fees to deter you from making changes so they can keep their costs low and offer cheaper prices.

You should always research these fees and consider them when comparing prices. Also, OTAs don’t need to offer the same cancellation or change policies that the airlines do. It’s important to review the terms and conditions before booking your airfare.

How to find the best prices on Flights

Personally, I like to begin my flight search with Google Flights (video tutorial at the end of this post). Google Flights allows you to search multiple airlines, multiple filters, track prices, and much more.

I also like to use the free Travel Arrow Chrome extension which will take my search parameters and filters from my Google Flights search and compare it with other travel sites and OTAs.

Customer Service Comparison

One of the biggest advantages of booking directly with the airline is the customer service experience. If you’ve ever had to deal with an OTA for flight changes, cancellations, or other issues, you know how stressful that can be.

When you have an issue with your booking, OTAs are limited in their ability to help you directly, so it may take longer to resolve. If you reach out to the airline, they’ll probably redirect you back to the OTA, causing further delays.

OTAs may prioritize cost savings by cutting back on customer service, allowing them to offer cheaper bookings compared to booking directly with the airline.

However, some OTAs, particularly larger ones, may provide better customer service than others. They may invest more in ensuring a positive customer experience.

So do your research and figure out what you’re willing to deal with in comparison to the money you’re saving when booking with an OTA.

Which Option Is Right for You?

When it comes to booking travel, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Deciding whether to book directly with the airline or through an OTA depends on your personal travel style, trip complexity, flexibility needs, and budget.

When I search for flights, I prioritize factors like comfort, time, convenience, and price.

I’ve learned the hard way about the inconvenience of missed connections caused by flight delays. That’s why I now always try for non-stop flights or those with minimal connections. The value of maximizing my time at the destination outweighs any potential savings from multiple connections.

And don’t even get me started on the hassle of lost luggage. I’ve become a pro at traveling with just a carry-on to avoid that headache. I’ll only check a bag if I’m on my way home.

That’s why I personally choose to book direct with the airline. I appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing I can reach out to them directly or visit their customer service counter if any issues arise.

Plus, the convenience of being able to change my flight online without worrying about pesky change fees is huge for me.

Ultimately, finding the right approach for you means considering your own preferences and experiences. It’s about selecting the option that offers the most convenience, and control, and fits your own travel needs.

Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time adventurer, there’s never been a better time to start exploring the world. So get ready to learn what it means to be a budget traveler.

Choose affordable destinations

Choosing affordable destinations is one of the best ways to afford to travel the world. Many destinations offer great experiences and adventures that don’t have to cost an arm and a leg!

Research your options: Start by researching different destinations and their costs. Consider the cost of flights, accommodation, food, and activities when comparing destinations.

Look for off-the-beaten-path destinations: Popular tourist destinations tend to be more expensive. Think about visiting the lesser well-known places that offer unique experiences without crowds and high prices.

Travel to countries with a favorable exchange rate: Consider visiting countries where your home currency is strong. This can help you get more for your money, making your trip more affordable.

Consider destinations closer to home: Traveling closer to home can be more affordable since you’ll likely save money on flights and other travel expenses. You never know, there may be hidden gems in your own backyard that you haven’t yet explored.

If you’re stuck on how to find affordable destinations, try the Google Flights Explore feature. “Explore” lets you enter your departure airport, travel date range, and other filters to see a map of all the potential destinations that fit your criteria.

This makes it easier to find affordable destinations, plus just like Google Flights, it’s free!

What I like about Google Flights Explore is that you can play around with your search to see how prices change based on different criteria. For example, you can adjust your travel dates or search for flights from a different airport to see if that helps you save money.

In addition to helping you find affordable destinations, Google Flights Explore also gives you info on things to do, places to stay, the weather, and when to visit each location. This can help you get a better sense of what to expect and decide whether a particular destination is right for you.

There are plenty of other sites and apps you can use as well, like Skyscanner, Kayak, or Hopper. But if you’re looking for a simple and easy-to-use option, Google Flights Explore is definitely worth checking out.

The shoulder season is the time between peak and off-peak travel seasons, and it can also be the perfect time to travel. Not only will you have fewer crowds and better prices (some destinations offer shoulder season-specific discounts), but usually great weather too!

Utilize public transportation

Public transportation is often much cheaper than renting a car, ridesharing, or taking taxis. Depending on the city, you may be able to purchase a daily or weekly pass that allows you to use all forms of public transportation at a discounted rate.

Transportation can be a considerable expense so by using public transportation you’ll save money on things like gas, parking fees, and car rental fees. This means you’ll have more money to spend on souvenirs, food, and activities.

Use travel rewards programs

Travel rewards programs are my favorite way to save money on travel expenses. You can save a lot of money on flights, hotels, and other travel expenses. By accumulating points or miles on everyday purchases, you can earn enough to redeem for free or discounted travel!

Access to exclusive perks: Many travel rewards programs offer exclusive perks such as lounge access, priority boarding, and free checked bags. These perks can enhance your travel experience and save you money.

Flexibility: Travel rewards programs are flexible and can be tailored to your travel needs. You can choose the program that best fits your preferences and redeem your rewards when it’s convenient for you.

Earn rewards for everyday spending: Many travel credit cards will allow you to earn travel rewards points or miles for everyday spending such as groceries, gas, and dining. This means you can earn valuable rewards and maximize your normal spending habits.

Easy to join: Most travel rewards programs are free to join and easy to sign up for. You can start earning rewards immediately after signing up.

Variety of programs: There are many travel rewards programs available, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Some programs are affiliated with airlines, hotels, or credit cards, making them easy to redeem for travel.

So whether you’re a frequent traveler or just starting out, travel rewards programs can be a great way to save money on travel. By choosing the right program and maximizing your rewards, you can make travel more affordable and accessible.

Many museums have reciprocal memberships with other museums around the country so you may find that you can get discounted or free admission. Local parks will sometimes have free events or festivals that you can check out during your visit.

This is also a great way to discover hidden gems at your destination and lead you to some unique and unexpected experiences that you might not have found otherwise.

Consider working or volunteering abroad

Working or volunteering abroad can be a great way to travel without spending a ton on accommodations and other travel expenses. Some organizations offer programs that provide free or low-cost accommodation and meals in exchange for volunteer work.

This can make travel more affordable and accessible, especially if you’re on a tight budget. I have more details in my post about creative ways to save money on travel.

Remember, you must always comply with local laws. You should do your own research and due diligence when considering working or volunteering abroad.

Look for travel deals and discounts

Travel sites such as Travelzoo, Vacations To Go, Expedia, Kayak, and Priceline offer discounted travel packages, including flights, hotels, and rental cars. These websites often have last-minute deals and flash sales that can save you money.

While third-party travel sites can offer great deals on travel, it’s important to be cautious when booking through these sites. While you may be able to find cheaper prices, it can sometimes be more convenient to book directly with the airline, hotel, or tour company.

You may not have as much control over your booking with a third party as you would booking direct. For example, if you need to make changes to your itinerary or cancel your trip, it can be more complicated to do so when you’ve booked through a third party.

That being said, there are times when booking through a third party site makes sense. If you’re looking for a package deal that includes flights, accommodations, and activities then it can be a convenient option.

Just be sure to do your research and read reviews before making a decision.

Plan your itinerary strategically

Make a list of the top attractions and destinations you want to visit on your trip. This will help you focus your planning and be realistic about your time.

Don’t try to pack too much into one day or you’ll end up feeling rushed and exhausted. Build in downtime for relaxation or unexpected delays, and be realistic about how much you can accomplish in one day. Group activities that are located close to each other so you can save time and money on transportation.

Traveling with a group or finding a travel buddy can be a great way to save money, have fun, and make new friends! It can save you money because of splitting the costs of accommodations, transportation, and activities.

Even if you prefer solo travel or cannot find a travel buddy, there are sites like Contiki that can bring solo travelers together on a group trip. You can still have the freedom to explore on your own but also have the support of others when you need it.

There are many ways to find travel groups or travel buddies, including social media groups, travel forums, and meet-up websites. Some travel companies also offer group travel packages that cater to specific interests or destinations.

Learning to travel like a local can not only enhance your travel experience but also help you save money. When you travel like a local, you get to experience a destination’s culture, food, and lifestyle in a more authentic way.

Stay in local neighborhoods: Instead of staying in touristy areas, try to find accommodations in local neighborhoods. This can help you experience the local lifestyle and culture, and can also be more affordable than staying in touristy areas.

Eat like a local: Instead of eating at touristy restaurants, try to find local restaurants that serve authentic cuisine. Ask locals where they are going for breakfast, lunch or dinner or wander around to find locations that are busy with locals.

Pros: Minimal effort as platforms like Neighbor or Stashbee allow you to easily connect with renters and set your own rental rates. If you’re traveling for an extended period and don’t want to pay for a full-sized apartment or house, renting out your storage space can be a more cost-effective option.
Cons: Renting out your storage space can put you at risk for liability if the renter’s property is damaged or stolen.

Equipment rentals: If you own equipment, such as cameras, drones, or musical instruments, you can rent them out to other people who need them.

Pros: You can use platforms like Fat Llama or RentMyItems to easily list and rent out your equipment. Depending on the type of equipment, rental rates can be quite high, making it great for passive income.
Cons: Renting out your equipment can put you at risk for liability if the renter is injured while using it. You’re also putting your equipment at risk of being stolen or damaged.

Create a niche website or blog

Creating a niche website or blog is a great way to make passive income while traveling. By creating content that is focused on a specific topic or niche, you can attract an audience and earn income through advertising, affiliate marketing, or selling your own products. Here’s how to get started:

Choose your niche: Choose a niche (topic) that you are passionate about and that has the potential for profitability. It can be a travel blog, but it doesn’t have to be!

If you have a broad topic you’ll probably want to narrow it down. For example, it’s not enough to say your niche is “travel”. You can drill down to something like “Solo Travel” or “Budget Travel” and you may want to niche it down even further.

Research keywords, trends, and competitors to find a niche that is underserved or has room for growth. Don’t try to figure it all out on your own, join a free Facebook Group to get ideas and connect with others doing the same thing!

Build your website or blog and create content

Choose a platform to build your website or blog. I personally have my site on WordPress which is great for bloggers.
Choose a domain name that reflects your niche and is easy to remember.
Create high-quality content that provides value to your audience.
Use SEO techniques to optimize your content for search engines and attract more traffic to your site.

Monetize your site

Once eligible, use advertising networks like Monumetric or Mediavine to display ads on your site and earn revenue. Not all advertising networks are created equal, so do your research and do not compromise customer experience unless it’s worth it.

Sell your own products, such as e-books or courses, to earn passive income.

Be sure to invest time and effort into creating a high-quality product that delivers value to your customers. But don’t strive for perfection because then you will never create your product. Research your competitors and strive to provide a superior product that also helps your audience.

Market your product: Use social media, email marketing, and other online platforms to market your product. Offer promotional discounts or free trials to attract customers and build a following. You can also sell your product on Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers if you don’t have a website or large social media and online presence.

Automate the sales process: Use platforms like Gumroad or SendOwl, to automate the sales process and deliver your product to customers.

By creating a digital product, you can leverage your expertise and skills to create a valuable product that generates passive income while you travel for years to come.

Sell your phone photos!

You can sell your own cellphone photography on stock photography websites such as Shutterstock, iStock, or your own website to earn passive income through licensing fees. This is a great way to put your travel photos or lifestyle photos to use. Here are some tips on how to create and sell stock photography:

Focus on quality: The quality of your images is crucial for their success as stock photography. But you don’t need to invest in high-quality equipment to be successful. Either way, it should be a mutually beneficial arrangement. Of course, this is will not be for everyone, but if you really enjoy seeing the world from a local perspective it can be the opportunity of a lifetime.

Alternatively, you can find people who need someone to house-sit for them. House sitting is a great and creative way to save money for travel abroad – you stay in a host’s home for free in exchange for taking care of their home and/or pets when they are away.

And it doesn’t have to be difficult to find a house. With the help of websites like TrustedHousesitters.com, HouseSitMatch.com, and HouseCarers.com, finding and booking a house-sitting gig around the world is easier than ever.

How it works

Through these websites, you can search for available house-sitting opportunities in the country or region you’re traveling to, compare different opportunities, and connect directly with the hosts to negotiate a contract. This way, you can find the perfect house-sitting opportunity to save money on accommodation abroad.

It’s free to join these sites and browse, but there is usually a small fee to apply for sites and connect with hosts. But if you compare the fee to how much you’d likely pay for accommodation you’re still winning!

One of the best ways to save money on travel is by using travel credit cards to your advantage. By finding the right travel credit card and maximizing its rewards and perks, you can earn points or miles that can be redeemed for free flights, hotel stays, and other travel expenses.

I know that people think that the credit card points game is a scam or that if you want to rack up enough points to really save money on travel you’ll need to spend a lot of money that you don’t have.

Not True!

If you educate yourself and actually understand how to use and maximize credit cards then you should never spend more money than you normally would. But then there’s also the statement about credit score. Many people think that having a lot of credit cards alone affects your credit score in a negative way.

The number of credit cards you have does not matter as much as how you use them. If you don’t believe me, believe Experian when they say “there’s no correct number of credit cards to have”. As long as you understand how your credit works and follow the rules of having good credit, you’re in the clear.

At this moment, I have about 12 credit cards and my credit score is consistently over 800.

Find the Right Travel Credit Card for You

The first step to using travel credit cards to your advantage is finding the right one for your needs. It’s important to consider the annual fee and interest rate of the card, as well as any additional benefits it may offer, such as travel insurance or airport lounge access. Do your research and compare different cards to find the one that best fits your lifestyle and travel goals.

But don’t be frightened by annual fee cards. Generally, the cards with the best perks and the best sign-up bonuses are the ones with an annual fee. But in many cases, you may be able to get more value out of the perks of the card…like a lot more value.

What you want to be careful of is not paying your statement balance on time and in full. Not following those two rules will negate any value or perks you get from the card.

Maximize Your Travel Credit Card Rewards and Perks

Once you have a travel credit card that works for you, it’s time to maximize its rewards and perks. Start by using the card for all of your travel-related expenses, such as flights, hotels, and rental cars. This will help you earn rewards quickly and efficiently.

Look for opportunities to earn bonus rewards, such as signing up for a new card or taking advantage of special promotions. Some cards also offer perks such as free checked bags, priority boarding, and hotel upgrades, so be sure to take advantage of these benefits when you can.

Open a High Yield Savings Account

I know I mentioned that having a travel fund is a boring way to save money for travel, but hear me out. Usually, when someone says they have a travel fund, they are referring to a normal savings account they have with their bank OR a sock filled with cash in their underwear drawer. There is no in-between.

Either way, they are likely earning little to no interest on the money that they have in this “travel fund”. That’s where a high-yield savings account comes in. With a high-yield savings account you have the potential to earn 20 times more than with a normal savings account.

This is by far the easiest way to save money for travel because you don’t even have to do anything but add the money into the account and then while you sleep you rack up that interest.

In the words of Warren Buffet, “If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.” Nobody wants that. And yes, you can set up automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account to make it easier to save. Most of these accounts don’t even have any deposit requirements to open an account and it’s completely free.

Look for free or low-cost activities

You’ve saved up for your dream trip and now it’s time to make the most of it. Look for free or low-cost activities, such as visiting parks, museums, or local festivals and markets. Consider purchasing a CityPASS or attraction pass that gives you access to multiple activities for a discounted price.

I love how with Google Flights I can track flight prices. Google Flights will send you an email when the price of your flight changes, so you can book at the best possible time. I always have a lot of alerts set so I’m ready to pounce on a deal!

Use the “Explore” option to see the prices for flights to various destinations on a map. This makes it easy to find affordable options for your travel plans. Simply select your departure airport, set your budget, and browse the map for destinations that fit within your price range.

However, the upside is that there will be fewer tourists, and you’ll likely find cheaper flights and hotel rates. So, with a little extra planning and layering, you can still have an amazing trip and save some cash!
