Whenever I think of Tennessee, Nashville’s iconic music scene always springs to mind. But just a short drive away, Franklin, TN, has a quintessentially southern, acoustic charm unlike anywhere else.

In Franklin, even the biggest names in music come to unwind, find inspiration, or call it home!

I’m not kidding- Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Tim McGraw, and Brad Paisley have all called Franklin TN their home at some point, and it is not uncommon to see a celebrity enjoying a cup of coffee or dinner around town.

My husband and I discovered just how magical Franklin can be during our visit in the fall.

As native South Floridians, we miss out on the fall colors, but Franklin has everything we love about the season.

We believe that it is worth a visit, whether you’re in Nashville looking for a day trip or a weekend getaway and no, I’m not just saying that because our last name is also Franklin.

In this post, we’ll discover the top 9 fall activities for couples in Franklin.

You’ll know why Franklin is a true hidden gem from live acoustic sets from up-and-coming musicians to fall festivals.

1. Cozy Breakfast Date

Oh man, I’ve always loved Southern Food (it’s the biscuits for me) and Franklin does not disappoint!

There are so many cute breakfast spots in downtown Franklin and the surrounding areas that are perfect for a romantic breakfast or brunch date.

Our Pick: Merridee’s Breadbasket

Merridee’s Breadbasket is located downtown on the same street as the Franklin Visitor Center, but it is not a traditional sit-down breakfast spot.

When you walk in, you order at the counter, they give you a number and you sit wherever you want. They’ll bring your order to you.

I love this concept!

There’s also seating outside and since the restaurant is not directly on Mainstreet, it’s still peaceful to sit there during breakfast.

You must try the cinnamon roll specialty coffee, it was my favorite! They also have glass cases filled with desserts and pastries.

Some of our other favorite breakfast spots:

• Puckett’s Restaurant – located right next door to Merridee’s. It’s like walking into a small grocery market, but it’s a traditional sit-down restaurant.
• Biscuit Love – located downtown in the historic Corn House, just a few steps from the public square. You gotta get a biscuit sandwich!
• Five Daughter’s Bakery—If you’re more into sweets for breakfast, you can head to The Factory and grab a freshly made donut. They offer seasonal flavors!

2. Franklin’s Coffee Trail

I don’t know about you, but my husband and I are much happier when we’ve had a good cup of coffee, really any time of the day.

Thankfully, Franklin has a coffee trail with plenty of amazing options for that perfect cup of Joe!

You can find the best spots by signing up for the Franklin Craft Coffee Trail, one of many free digital passports available, with no app download required.

We stopped at a few shops during our stay:

• McGavock’s Coffee Bar & Provisions – located inside the stunning Harpeth Hotel where we were staying.
• The Coffee House At Second And Bridge – located practically next door to the Harpeth Hotel in an old quaint southern house.
• The Fainting Goat Coffee Co. – across the street from The Carter House!
• Honest Coffee – we stopped by during our visit to The Factory in Franklin.

3. Scenic Drives Around Franklin

Coming from South Florida, we miss out on the leaves changing colors during the fall season. Thankfully, when driving around Frankin, there’s no shortage of beautiful scenery.

If you’re headed to Franklin, chances are you’ve rented a car so I highly recommend you go on some scenic drives to experience the charm of southern homes, farms, and old silos.

It’s something that my husband and I love to do when traveling!

Check out these routes:

Natchez Trace Parkway stretches 444 miles from Nashville, to Natchez, Mississippi. Franklin is home to the iconic Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge, a perfect photo opp, especially in the fall!

Old Natchez Trace runs parallel to the Natchez Trace Parkway and is known for beautiful estates and old farms, you’ll drive through some of the most affluent areas of Franklin.

Leipers Fork Scenic Route is a must-do when you’re in Franklin! It’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown Franklin and the village is like taking a trip back in time. It’s so cute!

Franklin Road: If you’re heading to Nashville, you’ll likely be taking Franklin Road. It’s a beautiful scenic drive so even though it’s sad that you’re leaving Franklin, at least you have a nice drive to enjoy on the way!

4. Discover the Charm of Leiper‘s Fork

Leiper’s Fork is approximately 8 to 10 miles southwest of downtown Franklin. The drive usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Not only is the drive one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, but this village is something out of a Hallmark movie!

There’s so much to do in Leiper’s Fork! It’s a relaxed atmosphere with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s no wonder so many celebrities call Leiper’s Fork and Franklin home.

We also had the opportunity to enjoy dinner and an open mic night at Fox & Locke. More on that later!

5. Hop On and Hop Off Scenic Tour

Who doesn’t love a hop-on hop-off tour?

It’s our favorite way to see a new place because it gives you a nice overview of the area and also serves as transportation to all of the major sights and attractions.

“The Franklin Hop” had a live tour guide knowledgeable about Frankin’s history, particularly during the Civil War, he even brought props!

He also gave us “homework” including books to read and movies to watch to understand better what it was like in Franklin and the South.

We caught the tour downtown at the Franklin Visitor Center.

The trolley tour takes you around downtown Franklin and beyond while making stops at major sights like the Factory, The Moore-Morris History & Culture Center, Carnton, and Carter House.

It’s one trolley that hits each stop every hour. The route is quite scenic!

Fun Fact, The Culture Center has a really cool presentation where you step into a saloon and are greeted by bartender hologram! The way they tell the history of Franklin is state of the art. A must visit!

6. Leisurely Picnic at Arrington Vineyards

Set on 95 beautiful acres, Arrington Vineyards is a serene escape with panoramic views of the rolling countryside of Middle Tennessee. And a fun fact, it is co-owned by country music artist Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn.

It’s truly a picturesque setting and perfect for a day out as a couple, but it’s even better with friends!

At the vineyard, you can bring your own picnic, and purchase a wine flight, glass, or a bottle to enjoy while listening to live music at several spots on the grounds.

It takes about 20 minutes to get there from downtown Franklin and the drive has breathtaking views of the Tennesee countryside.

7. Enjoy a Walk and Self-Guided Tour on Main Street

One of our favorite activities was grabbing a coffee and walking on Main Street in Downtown Franklin.

The downtown area was decorated for fall and it was so cute and quintessentially southern. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.

I also love that they are so pet-friendly! There are white dog bowls on Main Street, so cute.

Be sure to make a stop at the Franklin Theatre, known as the Crown Jewel of Franklin’s Main Street which offers movies, live music, dance performances, and more.

There are also self-guided tours on the Visit Franklin website as part of the digital passport program including the Great American Main Street.

All self-guided tours are free!

8. Catch Live Music at Local Venues

Probably, the coolest experience of the entire visit was the live music, especially at Fox & Locke restaurant in Leiper’s Fork.

On Thursday nights, Fox & Locke hosts an open mic night. It attracts a mix of local talent, musicians passing through, and some driving hours to grab a spot to perform.

The cover is only $7 and purchasing tickets is highly recommended. They sell out in minutes!

The lineup was amazing—we listened to artists from around the world! Some performed covers and others performed original songs for the first time.

I know I’ll be hearing some of these songs on the radio someday, the talent is next level!

Several celebrities walked in to listen or hung out outside. One of which was Patrick Cassidy (yes, those Cassidys) came to watch his son perform – Jack Cassidy.

It was honestly one of the coolest experiences and one that my husband and I will be talking about for years to come.

It was better than any of the live performances we experienced in Nashville – and that’s saying a lot because I’ve been to the Bluebird Cafe!

But that’s not all, there’s live music everywhere in Franklin. Here’s some of our favorites:

• Tornado Room – located in Leiper’s Fork just below The Country Boy restaurant (across from Fox & Locke). It’s an intimate speakeasy that is actually used as a tornado shelter!
• Kimbro’s Pickin Parlor – located in downtown Franklin, is like a huge house party with live music, games, and food.
• Gray’s on Main – located on Main Street, Gray’s is a pharmacy turned bar and restaurant with live music on the 2nd floor.

9. Photo Ops at Pumpkinfest

Our trip to Franklin fell on the 39th annual Pumpkinfest which is held on Main Street and welcomes over 100,000 people!

They set up what was dubbed “Autumn Alley” on a section of Main Street with a ton of super fun fall-themed photo opportunities, games, and live music.

We had a lot of fun getting those fall pics that can never happen in South Florida.

The festival has a main stage for live performances, vendors selling arts and crafts, and plenty of fun food stalls from homemade donuts to German delights!

It was a fun way to enjoy the season!

Fun Fact, this year Franklin also celebrated the 225th anniversary of the city’s founding.

How far is Franklin from Nashville?

Franklin, TN, is just a hop, skip, and a jump from iconic Nashville. It’s only about 21 miles south of Nashville and an easy drive.

It took us around 30 -40 minutes driving during peak rush hour. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway from Nashville or if you want to spend the day there – although I don’t think that’s enough!

Is Franklin, TN worth visiting?

Absolutely, Franklin, TN, is undoubtedly worth a visit! Franklin is a charming city steeped in history, particularly from the Civil War era and the Battle of Franklin.

But even if you’re not into history, just walking around the downtown area and visiting the quaint antique shops and boutiques gives quintessential Southern town vibes.

And you can’t miss the live music scene! Even if you’re not into country music, you can’t walk down the street without stopping to listen to whoever is performing.

You never know, you could be listening to the next Taylor Swift!

A Laramie Wyoming 2 day itinerary is easy to create for this quaint, but vibrant and cultural college town at over 7,000 ft elevation. Situated between 2 mountain ranges, Laramie has everything from adventurous outdoor activities to a fun food and drink scene.

We spent budget-friendly 2 nights in Laramie, Wyoming after spending 3 nights at Rawah Guest Ranch which we booked entirely on points and miles so we paid $0.

Affectionately known as “Laradise”, Laramie is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Denver and it is also pretty accessible to other quaint towns and parks.

Laramie Wyoming 2 Day Itinerary

If you’re in Colorado and have never been to Wyoming then Laramie is the perfect town to get your feet wet and immerse yourself in Cowboy culture. Since we were right on the border of Colorado and Wyoming we took that opportunity to spend 2 days exploring Southeast Wyoming and we’re so glad we did!

Is Laramie Wyoming worth visiting?

Absolutely! People consider Laramie to be just a small college town, home to the University of Wyoming, but it’s so much more than that. There is a lot of history, amazing scenery, and a chill atmosphere. We thought it was the perfect place to spend some time before returning to Denver.

Day 1: Hiking and Downtown Laramie

Start your day with one of the many fun brunch spots like the Prairie Rose Cafe which was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners Drive-ins and Dives. Or if you fancy some afternoon tea, check out the Sugar Mouse!

For those interested in the outdoors and hiking the Vedauwoo Recreation Area is the perfect place to spend the day. I would recommend packing a lunch and having a picnic during your hike at one of the picnic areas around the trails and the campground.

In the evening you’ll want to have dinner in downtown Laramie at Altitude Chophouse or Born in a Barn. There are also plenty of breweries to chill at. Next, head over to Cowboy Saloon for a night out. The saloon has events on select nights like Karaoke or live music.

Day 2: Day Trip to Cheyenne

Cheyenne Wyoming is about an hour’s drive from Laramie. It’s a beautifully scenic drive if you take Happy Jack Road. You can make a stop at Curt Gowdy Park on the way. When you get to Cheyenne grab some coffee at Paramount Cafe and walk around downtown.

You should consider taking a ride on the Cheyenne Street Trolley you’ll learn about the history of Cheyenne on the Wild West History Tour!

Day Trips from Laramie Wyoming

There are a good number of day trip opportunities from Laramie Wyoming. When we were there we spent one day driving around and visiting the various landmarks. We even took the scenic drive on Happy Jack Road to Cheyenne which we enjoyed!

We started the day by visiting Vedauwoo and spent half the day exploring. We brought lunch with us and stopped along the campground. After lunch, we got back on I-80 and drove down to the Ames Monument.

After the Ames Monument, we decided to head back on 1-80 to visit the Lincoln Memorial Monument. There is a small visitor’s center. From there we got onto Happy Jack Road and took the scenic drive to Cheyenne. We stopped at Curt Gowdy Park on the way.

Vedauwoo Recreation Area

Vedauwoo is 20 miles southeast of Laramie and is home to some unique and beautiful rock formations. There are plenty of cool hiking trails, rock climbing, and picnic grounds. It’s a nice place to visit in the morning to go on a hike and then have lunch while you take in the views.

Snowy Range Scenic Byway

On our way from Rawah Ranch to Laramie, we took a detour to Medicine Bow National Forest on the Snowy Range Scenic Byway. It’s about 30 miles west of Laramie. It was still in the 70s in September so we stopped at Mirror Lake and took in the views. There were picnic areas and people were fishing. I so wish we had brought lunch with us! In the winter, the Snowy Range is great for skiing and other winter sports.

Fort Collins, Colorado

Fort Collins is a great place to stop if you’re heading south of Laramie. You’ll get there in about 65 miles and it has a charming Old Town, great breweries, and restaurants. For outdoor activities, the Cache la Poudre River is nice!

Cheyenne, Wyoming

Cheyenne is the capital and largest city in Wyoming. It’s about 50 miles east of Laramie and you can get there by way of the scenic drive on Happy Jack Road! Cheyenne is known for its Western heritage so if that’s your thing you’ll love it.

Hiking in Happy Jack Recreation Area

If you’re planning to go on the scenic route to Cheyenne on Happy Jack Road then you can stop by the Happy Jack Recreation Area to have a picnic or do some hiking in the morning on your way! The recreation area is about 15 miles east of Laramie. There are hiking and mountain biking trails, it’s beautiful!

Medicine Bow National Forest

On our way from Rawah Ranch, we took a little detour to Medicine Bow National Forest which is about 40 miles west of Laramie. It’s a must-visit and has stunning wilderness views. We drove through the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway and it was one of the most picturesque drives we’ve ever done!

Curt Gowdy State Park

Curt Gowdy State Park is located about 40 miles southeast of Laramie and is a perfect place for outdoor activities like boating, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. You could totally spend the morning or the whole day there.

If you wanted, you could spend the morning hanging out at Curt Gowdy and then take the Happy Jack Road to Cheyenne.

What is the best time to visit Laramie, Wyoming? Laramie experiences distinct seasons. Summer (June to August) is popular for outdoor activities, while winter (December to February) offers snow sports. Spring and fall are transitional periods with milder weather. In late September it was still pretty warm during the day and colder once the sun went down. Apparently, that was not normal as by late September they usually have had their first snow.

How do I get to Laramie? Laramie has a regional airport and is also accessible by car from major nearby cities. We got there by way of Colorado and flew into Denver. The scenic drive is part of the experience, so consider a road trip!

Are there kid-friendly activities in Laramie? Absolutely! Laramie has family-friendly attractions, parks, and museums suitable for all ages.

What are some must-try local dishes in Laramie? You’ll find all the different types of cuisine and restaurants in Laramie. We are big Guy Fieri Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives fans so we had to check out Born in a Barn where you’ll find wings, burgers, and sandwiches. Wyoming is cowboy country so you don’t want to miss out on bison, buffalo, and rocky mountain oysters.

Can I explore Laramie on a budget? Absolutely! Laramie offers many budget friendly options for accommodation, dining, and activities. The closer you get to the University of Wyoming the more expensive accommodations will be. We stayed a little on the outskirts and there were still plenty of restaurants and shops and we were just a few minutes from downtown Laramie.

Are there any events or festivals happening during my visit? If any events or festivals are happening during your visit, you’ll find information on the Visit Laramie events calendar. In September we stumbled upon a Karaoke competition at Cowboy Saloon and Dance Hall!

What outdoor activities are available in Laramie? There are seriously so many outdoor activities in Laramie. You can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, and more in the nearby mountains and parks. Don’t forget to pack your outdoor gear!

1 Day in Shenandoah National Park

If you’ve only got 1 day to experience Shenandoah National Park then it’s important to decide on the type of experience you’re looking for. There’s so much to do in Shenandoah National Park that it’s hard to get it done in one day, but it’s doable if you have a plan. Check out these pro tips for visiting National Parks.

Here’s my recommendation: Depending on which direction you’re coming from, you may want to start around the middle and enter through Swift Run Gap heading North on Skyline Drive, and then exit at Thornton Gap. This will give you a wonderfully scenic drive with plenty of overlooks and trailheads for hiking to stop at.

You’ll pass through Big Meadows where you can stop for a snack, and grab some gas (although we recommend filling up before entering the park). There’s also a souvenir shop, a small cafe, and a canteen where you can grab some camping supplies. Next door is Byrd Visitor Center where you can learn about the history of the park.

As you keep driving you’ll see Skyland Resort where you can stop for lunch, a coffee, and souvenirs. We brought our own lunch and enjoyed it at the picnic tables which have an amazing view. However, the restaurant view was also spectacular.

2 Day Itinerary Shenandoah National Park

2 days in Shenandoah National Park is plenty of time to experience the beauty and wonder of the park. Now, there are only 4 Shenandoah Park entrances so where you’re staying in proximity to the park will likely determine which entrance you want to enter first. With that being said, this is what we would recommend for a 2 day Shenandoah National Park itinerary.

Day 1: Exploring the Northern District

On the first day of your visit to Shenandoah National Park, you may like to start at the Northern entrance which is Front Royal. A lot of people like to start at the top and make their way down Skyline Drive and exit towards the center of the park at Thornton Gap or Swift Run Gap.

Here’s a sample itinerary for your first day in Shenandoah National Park:

• Enter the park at the Front Royal entrance (recommend starting quite early).
• Enjoy a scenic drive heading South along Skyline Drive, stopping at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center to gather information and get oriented with the park’s trails and activities.
• Go on a morning/midday hike on one of the trails.
• Lunch picnic at Big Meadows.
• Continue south along Skyline Drive, making stops at popular overlooks.
• Exit the park at Swift Run Gap.

Day 2: Adventure in the Southern District

On the 2nd day of your visit to Shenandoah National Park, you may want to enter the Swift Run Gap Park entrance and head South to explore the Southern District. You will exit through Rockfish Gap.

The Southern District is great for hiking and overlooks there are not any larger rest stops like Skyland or Big Meadows so I’d recommend packing plenty of food, drinks, and snacks. Make sure that you’re fuel tank is full as there will not be a gas station available until you exit the park.

Here’s a sample itinerary for your second day in Shenandoah National Park:

• Start your day early and enter Shenandoah National Park through the Swift Run Gap Entrance.
• Hike Discovery Trail (Mile 79.5) or one of the other many hiking trails.
• Lunch at Dundo Picnic Area – Mile 83.7
• Head south on Skyline Drive, stopping at one of the popular overlooks.
• Consider another hike, but try to pick a trail with a lot of shade cover as it may be hotter in the afternoon
• Exit the park at Rockfish Gap and stop by one of the many breweries, wineries, or coffee shops in the area!

Please note that these mile markers mentioned are approximate and may vary slightly. The direction you’ll be facing while hiking varies depending on the specific trail. Remember to check the trail conditions and difficulty level prior to starting any hike, and always practice Leave No Trace.

If you’re looking to completely immerse yourself in the surroundings there are many accommodation options in Shenandoah National Park. From camping to staying in a rustic cabin, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the park’s natural beauty.

Campgrounds: The park’s campgrounds provide an excellent opportunity to connect with nature. Shenandoah offers several campgrounds each surrounded by scenic landscapes. Campsites usually have basic facilities such as picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms.

Lodges and Cabins: But don’t worry, if you prefer a bit more comfort Shenandoah offers lodges and cabins. Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Lodge are the two main lodges within the park.

Backcountry Camping: If you’re seeking a more rugged experience, backcountry camping is available.

Nearby Accommodations: Staying within Shenandoah National Park is not totally necessary if you’d like to be in a more populated area with plenty of shopping, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc. There are a ton of accommodation options in the nearby towns such as Luray, Front Royal, and Charlottesville with a wide range of hotels, motels, and vacation rentals. Staying in these towns can also provide convenient access to other attractions in the region, such as Luray Caverns or Monticello.

Dining options in Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park has a few dining options that you can enjoy during your visit. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a hearty meal, or a scenic picnic you’ll find a great spot in the park.

Skyland Resort Dining Room: Pollock Dining Room is located at Skyland Resort, the dining room has breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley.

Big Meadows Lodge Restaurant: Nestled within the heart of the park at Big Meadows, Spottswood Dining Room offers a cozy setting with handcrafted furnishings and a menu with locally sourced ingredients and traditional Appalachian flavors.

Grab-and-Go Options: For quick and convenient options both Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Lodge offer grab-and-go options. You can also find other food stops along Skyline Drive.

Bring Your Own Food: Shenandoah National Park also allows visitors to bring their own food and beverages. There are plenty of picnic areas throughout the park.

Remember that dining options within the park may vary depending on the season, so it’s a good idea to check the availability and hours of operation in advance.

Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail: If you’re a wine lover like me the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail is the perfect way to spend a day in the Shenandoah Valley when not venturing through the park. The trail offers numerous wineries and vineyards, offering tastings of award-winning wines against the backdrop of rolling hills and vine-covered landscapes.

Historic Downtowns: The charming towns surrounding Shenandoah National Park provide a blend of history, culture, and local charm. Front Royal, known as the “Gateway to Shenandoah,” offers quaint shops, art galleries, and dining options that showcase the region’s hospitality. Further south, the town of Charlottesville is home to Monticello, the former home of President Thomas Jefferson, and the University of Virginia.

What do I need to know before going to Shenandoah National Park?

Park Operating Hours: Shenandoah’s operating hours vary by season, with longer hours during peak months. The Skyline Drive is open year-round, but portions of it may close during winter due to snow and ice. By Car: The most common way to reach Shenandoah National Park is by car. The park is easily accessible via the scenic Skyline Drive, which runs the length of the park from north to south. There are four major entrances to the park: Front Royal Entrance (North District), Thornton Gap Entrance (Central District), Swift Run Gap Entrance (Central District), and Rockfish Gap Entrance (South District).

By Air: The closest major airports to Shenandoah National Park are Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO). You can also fly into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). From these airports, you can rent a car and drive to the park. By Train: Amtrak offers train services to Charlottesville, Virginia. From there, you can rent a car or use a shuttle service to reach the park.

By Bus or Shuttle: Some private tour companies and shuttle services offer guided tours or transportation to Shenandoah National Park from nearby cities and towns.

By Bicycle or Motorcycle: If you enjoy cycling or motorcycling, you can access Shenandoah National Park via Skyline Drive, which offers a scenic and enjoyable ride through the park. And yes, you’ll still have to pay the park entrance fee.

By Foot: For adventurous hikers, the Appalachian Trail runs through Shenandoah National Park, and there are access points along the trail to enter the park on foot.

Before your trip, it’s a good idea to check the park’s official website for the latest information on road conditions, closures, and any special regulations or requirements.

Are there any fees to enter the park?

Shenandoah National Park has several entrance points, and each requires an entrance fee, which grants you access for seven consecutive days. I would recommend purchasing your entrance pass in advance online to make entering quick and smooth.

What is the best town to stay in to explore Shenandoah National Park?

The town of Luray is often considered one of the best towns to stay in when exploring Shenandoah National Park since it’s just a short drive from the park’s Thornton Gap Entrance. But it really depends on what you’re planning to do while you’re in the Shenandoah Valley area because there’s honestly so much.

• Luray, Virginia: Approximately 10 miles east of Shenandoah National Park’s Thornton Gap Entrance.
• Front Royal, Virginia: Located about 1 mile north of Shenandoah National Park’s North Entrance (Front Royal Entrance).
• Stanley, Virginia: Situated around 5 miles east of Shenandoah National Park’s Thornton Gap Entrance.
• Madison, Virginia: Approximately 8 miles south of Shenandoah National Park’s Swift Run Gap Entrance.
• Waynesboro, Virginia: Positioned about 3 miles south of Shenandoah National Park’s Rockfish Gap Entrance.
• Elkton, Virginia: Situated approximately 10 miles north of Shenandoah National Park’s Swift Run Gap Entrance.

Is Shenandoah National Park crowded?

Shenandoah National Park can get crowded on the weekends during any time of year, but especially during the summer months when it’s warm. Like many popular national parks, Shenandoah can experience higher visitor numbers during peak seasons and holidays, especially during the summer and fall foliage months.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when the park is generally less crowded, and the weather is still quite pleasant. To avoid crowds, consider exploring lesser-known trails or less-visited areas within the park.

Can I bring my pet to Shenandoah National Park?

Yes, you can bring your pet to Shenandoah National Park, but be aware of the park’s guidelines and restrictions. Pets must be on a leash at all times, with a maximum leash length of six feet. They are allowed in developed areas of the park, such as campgrounds, picnic areas, and along paved roads, including Skyline Drive. However, pets are generally not permitted on most hiking trails, including those leading to waterfalls or popular viewpoints. It’s important to plan ahead and research pet-friendly hiking options if you wish to hike with your pet.

What should I pack for my trip to Shenandoah National Park?

Bring comfortable hiking shoes, moisture-wicking socks, and lightweight clothing that you can easily layer. Be sure to also bring a waterproof jacket or poncho, an extra change of clothes, a hat, and sunglasses. For hikes, you’ll want to carry a daypack with water bottles or a hydration reservoir, a trail map, a portable charger (mine is solar with a compass), and portable snacks.

Safety items like a first aid kit, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Other good things to bring include a camera or smartphone, binoculars, a portable fan, a water spray bottle plus plenty of food, drinks, and snacks. Lastly, bring trash bags to practice Leave No Trace.

If you’re camping, make sure to follow all guidelines.

Clothing:

• Comfortable hiking or walking shoes with good traction
• Moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry
• Lightweight, breathable clothing (t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and a light jacket)
• Rain jacket or poncho in case of sudden showers
• Hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun
• Sunglasses
• Extra change of clothes

Hiking Gear:

Planning Your Perfect Shenandoah Valley Girls Trip

Nestled in the heart of Virginia, Shenandoah Valley is a picturesque setting with rolling hills, lush forests, and majestic mountains. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, with amazing outdoor activities and beautiful scenery. It’s also an awesome budget-friendly alternative to other girls trip destinations.

Getting to Shenandoah Valley

You know that Shenandoah Valley is the perfect girls trip destination, but what’s the best way to get there? Well, that does depend on where you plan to visit within the Shenandoah Valley. Let’s use Shenandoah National Park as an example.

The closest airport to Shenandoah National Park is Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO), which is approximately 45 miles southeast of the park. This regional airport offers domestic flights and serves as a gateway to the Shenandoah Valley region.

Another option is the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), approximately 80 miles northeast of Shenandoah National Park. As a major international airport, IAD will offer a wide range of flight options and is well-connected to various destinations.

If you prefer a larger airport with even more flight options, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is another option. Located approximately 100 miles northeast of Shenandoah National Park, DCA is a major airport serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Once you’ve arrived at your chosen airport, there are several transportation options available to reach Shenandoah Valley. But most definitely rent a car as you’ll want to explore the area at your own pace.

Keep in mind that you won’t find an airport in immediate proximity to Shenandoah National Park, the scenic drive to the park from any of these airports is part of the experience!

When we visited Shenandoah Valley we flew into DCA. We rented a car through AutoSlash and drove 2 hours to Harrisonburg, VA. It was one of the most beautiful and scenic drives I’ve ever experienced.

Harrisonburg was perfect for us because of its proximity to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. It is also one of the larger cities within the Shenandoah Valley with many hotels, restaurants, wineries, and breweries.

Where to stay in Shenandoah Valley

When planning your girls trip to Shenandoah Valley, you’ll find plenty of affordable accommodation options in the nearby towns within the valley.

Winchester: Located in the northern part of the valley, Winchester is a historic city with a vibrant downtown area. It offers a blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities, including museums, art galleries, and nearby nature parks.

Harrisonburg: Situated in the central region of Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg is home to James Madison University and one of the largest cities in the area. The city offers a thriving arts scene, a variety of dining options, and access to outdoor activities in nearby national forests. This is where we stayed and I highly recommend it!

Staunton: Located in the southern part of the valley, Staunton is a charming town with well-preserved architecture and a lively arts community. Its historic downtown area is filled with unique shops, art galleries, and the world-renowned American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse.

Front Royal: Positioned at the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park, Front Royal is a popular starting point for exploring the park’s scenic beauty. It offers outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and canoeing, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants. Many people like to start here and take Skyline Drive down through the entire park (park admission required).

Luray: Known for its proximity to Luray Caverns, one of the largest and most popular cave systems in the eastern United States, Luray is a small town with many natural wonders and outdoor activities. The town also offers quaint shops, local eateries, and access to the Shenandoah River.

Lexington: Situated in the southern part of Shenandoah Valley, Lexington is a historic town with a rich heritage. It is home to two prestigious colleges, Washington and Lee University, and Virginia Military Institute, and features historic architecture, museums, and annual events.

Waynesboro: nestled in the heart of Shenandoah Valley, Waynesboro offers a charming and welcoming atmosphere that makes it an appealing place to stay when exploring the region. It is in close proximity to Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway making it the perfect location for outdoor adventures and scenic drives. It’s also conveniently located near a wide variety of lovely restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Girls Just Wanna Hike

When it comes to a girls trip to Shenandoah Valley, there’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in the stunning natural beauty through hiking. Shenandoah Valley offers so many scenic trails making it an ideal destination for hikers of all skill levels.

Shenandoah National Park is an obvious choice from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes, but there are so many options in the Shenandoah Valley for hiking. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests offer a network of trails, including the popular Crabtree Falls trail.

Remember before you embark on your hiking adventures in Shenandoah Valley, be prepared. Wear the right footwear and clothing, and pack plenty of water and snacks. Also, be mindful of the park’s guidelines, respect wildlife and vegetation, and leave no trace behind. If you’re driving, make sure you fill up as there may not be a nearby gas station.

Humpback Rocks

Humpback Rocks is situated within Shenandoah National Park. The hike to the summit is approximately 1.0 mile each way where you’ll have panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s the perfect backdrop for photos or a nice picnic. Nearby, you can explore the Humpback Rocks Farm, a preserved 19th-century mountain farm that provides insights into the area’s past.

Sherando Lake

Nestled within George Washington National Forest, Sherando Lake is a hidden gem and picturesque lake near Lyndhurst, Virginia. Sherando Lake is a natural oasis with its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches. The lake is a great spot for boating, kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding. Trails that surround the lake include Blue Loop Trail and the White Loop Trail. There are also picnic areas with grills and picnic tables.

Blue Ridge Tunnel

The Blue Ridge Tunnel, also known as the Crozet Tunnel, is a remarkable historic landmark that stands as a testament to engineering ingenuity in Shenandoah Valley. Located near the town of Afton, Virginia, this tunnel was constructed in the 1850s.

Explore Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park is the crown jewel of Shenandoah Valley. With over 500 miles of trails and stunning scenic drives along the iconic Skyline Drive, the park offers endless opportunities for exploration.

When visiting Shenandoah National Park, we did the Frazier Discovery Trail and really enjoyed it. Although it was considered an easy trail, it was quite rocky. It’s always a good idea to check trail conditions and pick trails that match your fitness level and preferences.

Regardless of which of Virginia’s caverns you visit, you and your friends will experience extraordinary formations and appreciate the hidden wonders beneath the Shenandoah Valley. It’s honestly one of the coolest things we’ve done!

We started in D.C. and stayed in Harrisonburg which is one of the largest cities in the valley and was about 2 hours away from D.C.

What is the best time of year to visit Shenandoah Valley?

Fall is probably the best time to visit the Shenandoah Valley for the milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Spring and fall both offer mild temperatures and beautiful scenery, with spring showcasing wildflowers and fall with stunning foliage. Summer is popular for outdoor activities, while winter is quieter and has the potential for snowfall.

We visited in July and the mornings were in the low 80s with the afternoons warming up to the high 80s or low 90s. It was sunny with some occasional afternoon and evening showers. We were there during the weekdays of the July 4th holiday and found that it was not crowded and quite pleasant. It did get more crowded on the weekend.

Remember, if you want to find the best time to travel for your budget and fewer crowds then avoid weekends, holidays, and when kids are out of school. And always check the local weather no matter what time of year.

While three days in Las Vegas may feel short, it’s definitely enough time to experience many of the city’s highlights. But it also depends on what you’re looking to do while in Vegas. Personally, I can only handle so much of the hustle and bustle so 3 days is plenty for me.

If you’re looking to party in the nightclubs, spend time in the casino, lay by the pool, catch a show, and have some fun dinners then you can pack all that into three days in Vegas. If you’re interested in exploring the surrounding area, the Grand Canyon, or Red Rock Canyon then you may want to tack on a couple of extra days.

How do you get the most out of your trip to Las Vegas?

Make a list of must-do activities: Do some research on the top attractions and events in Las Vegas and make a list of the ones you don’t want to miss. Some of the ideas in this post should make the list!

Book in advance: There’s always something to do in Vegas, but if you have specific shows, restaurants or activities booking in advance can save you time and money. Even if you book only a couple of things in advance you’ll have something to look forward to and can plan around those activities.

Don’t rent a car: If you’re heading to the strip there’s no reason to have a car. You can either walk or take a ride share like Uber and Lyft. The strip is pretty long so be prepared for a lot of walking.

Expand your food palate: Las Vegas is known for its amazing restaurants, so there’s no excuse not to try something new.

Stay hydrated: With all the excitement and fun, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Las Vegas is located in the middle of the desert, so it’s essential to stay hydrated. Be sure to carry a water bottle with you. If you’re laying by the pool wear sunscreen and reapply frequently.

Take advantage of free attractions: Las Vegas is known for its extravagant and luxurious attractions, but there are also many free things to see and do. Take a walk along the Strip, watch the Bellagio fountains, or visit the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat.

Take advantage of happy hours and specials: Las Vegas is known for its nightlife and party scene, but that doesn’t mean you always have to spend a lot of money. Don’t forget to have fun: Remember to relax and enjoy your trip, and don’t stress too much about seeing and doing everything. Las Vegas is all about having fun, so let loose and have a good time!

How many days is enough for Nashville?

How many days you spend in Nashville really depends on what your preferences are. But, typically three to five days is enough time to explore the city’s main attractions and experience the city’s music and food scene.

You’ll have enough time to visit some of the city’s main museums and landmarks and take in a few live music performances. But if you want to spend some time in the surrounding areas, such as visiting the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, you may want to consider spending a bit more time in Nashville.

Again, it really depends on your interests and preferences. I think that 3-5 days is a good starting point to get a taste of Nashville’s main highlights and you’ll definitely have a fun and amazing trip.

Five days will give you enough time to take in the main sights and sounds while also allowing you to take in some of the lesser-known parts of the city.

During your five days in Nashville, you can explore the Music Row, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Grand Ole Opry, and check out some live music performances. You can also explore the city’s vibrant neighborhoods such as The Gulch, East Nashville, and 12 South. You could also take a day trip to some of the nearby attractions like the Belle Meade Plantation, the Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, or the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.

Kick-off Your Girls Trip with Music and Drinks on Broadway

Welcome to Nashville, ladies! To start off your girls trip to Nashville itinerary, head to the heart of Music City and take a stroll down famous Broadway. This historic street is lined with honky-tonks, bars, and live music venues, making it the perfect spot to kick off your trip.

Start off at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, a Nashville institution known for its live country music and famous patrons like Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline. From there, make your way down Broadway and pop into other iconic spots like Robert’s Western World and The Stage.

Nashville is known as the Music City for a reason. The honky tonks (bars with live music) have performers starting in the morning until late at night. So, as you walk down the street if you hear something you like, poke your head inside. You never know who may be playing. You’ll find everything from bluegrass to blues and rockabilly.

After a night of music and drinks, grab a bite to eat at one of the many late-night restaurants on Broadway. Jack’s BBQ and The Stillery are both great options for some delicious southern-style food.

End your night with a trip to the rooftop bar at the the classy Twelve Thirty Club. Don’t forget to wear your dancing shoes because tonight, you’ll be living it up like true Nashville locals.

Explore the City of Nashville

Nashville is the Music City, but it’s also filled with rich culture and history. Start off your day by hopping on and hopping off the Nashville Hop on/Hop off Trolley tour.

The hop on hop off trolley tour is a great way to see the city at your own pace and explore the many different neighborhoods and landmarks that make Nashville unique. The trolley tour also offers an audio guide that provides interesting information and history of the city.

The tour is very affordable and is a great way to explore the city in a fun, convenient, and efficient way. So, if you’re planning a trip to Nashville, be sure to include a hop on hop off trolley tour in your itinerary.

Today, it’s all about indulging in the delicious food and shopping that Nashville has to offer. Start off your day with brunch at Biscuit Love, where you can enjoy delicious southern-style biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles, and more. Biscuit Love has several locations, but arrive early!

Next, spend the afternoon shopping at some of Nashville’s best boutiques and vintage shops. Head to the Hillsboro Village neighborhood for a mix of local and national retailers, including Fanny’s House of Music and White’s Mercantile.

If you need a yummy afternoon pick me up, definitely grab a donut (or 12) at Five Daughers Bakery!

For dinner, take a trip to the Germantown neighborhood and try out the famous hot chicken at Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack or Hattie B’s. This Nashville specialty is a must-try for any hot chicken lover.

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience head over to The Catbird Seat, which offers an interactive, multi-course meal prepared by the chefs right in front of you. You’ll want to book in advance.

After dinner, take a walk around the Germantown neighborhood and enjoy a cold drink at one of the local bars and brewpubs like the Black Abbey Brewing Company.

Take a Day Trip to Surrounding Areas

If you have the time, spend the day exploring the areas right outside of Nashville. Start off your day by taking a scenic drive to the beautiful Belle Meade Plantation, where you can take a guided tour of the historical mansion and learn about the history of the property and the lives of the people who lived there.

If you and the girls love wine, you’ll definitely want to visit the Belle Mead Winery for a tasting! Enjoy the beautiful 32 acres grounds, the restaurant, games court and more. If you do not have a reservation for a ticketed event, you can purchase a pass that will gain you access to the grounds and includes a free tasting (21+).

If you’re looking for something a little more off the beaten path, take a trip to the Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. This 55-acre estate is home to beautiful gardens, art galleries, and a historic mansion. The estate also features hiking trails, perfect for a scenic walk.

For wine, you can also visit Arrington Vineyards, located just outside of Nashville. Here you can sample some of Tennessee’s finest wines and take in the beautiful views of the vineyard.

You may also want to check out the historic town of Franklin, just a short drive from Nashville. Here you’ll find charming antique shops, art galleries and a beautiful downtown square. Be sure to check out the Carter House and the Lotz House, two important Civil War sites in the area.

End your day with dinner at the Loveless Cafe, a Nashville institution known for its southern-style cooking and homemade preserves.

Ridesharing: Uber and Lyft are both widely available in Nashville, making it easy to get around the city quickly and affordably.

Car rental: If you prefer to have your own transportation, car rental companies like Enterprise, Avis, and Hertz are all located in the city and can be a good option for getting around.

Bike rental: If you prefer a more active way to explore the city, Nashville has a bike-sharing program, B-cycle, which allows you to rent a bike from one of the many stations around the city.

Divvy Bikes: Chicago’s bike-share program, Divvy, offers a convenient and budget-friendly way to get around the city. You just rent a bike at one of the hundreds of stations around the city and drop it off at another when you’re done.

Taxis and rideshare services: Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are readily available in Chicago and can be a convenient way to get around, especially if you’re traveling in a group. Be sure to compare prices and consider surge pricing during busy times.

Walking and cycling: Chicago is a very walkable city, with many of its top attractions located within close proximity to each other. The city is also known for its lakefront path and many parks, making it a great place to cycle.

Water Taxis: For a unique transportation experience, consider taking one of the city’s water taxis along the Chicago River. This is a fun and budget-friendly way to see the city’s skyline.
